Abstract

Describing picture strategy is one of the techniques that can be used to improve students' speaking skills. Speaking skill is one of the subjects that difficult to be mastered by young learners. This study was conducted in SMA Al Azhar 3 Bandar Lampung at first-grade students. With qualitative data, the result showed that describing a picture strategy can improve students' speaking skills. This finding is in line with the previous research finding that describing pictures can help students to improve students’ speaking skills. Nevertheless, there are some problems gained in using describing picture strategy. Many students could not apply grammar correctly when they speak by using the strategy. The students are difficult to understand English when their friends speak English using describing the picture.

Abstract

Membimbing siswa untuk menguasai tata bahasa Inggris sesuai dengan yang mereka butuhkan merupakan tantangan untuk para guru. Terlebih lagi dalam situasi pandemi saat ini pembelajaran dilaksanakan secara daring. Banyak siswa/i masih mengalami kesulitan untuk memahami tata bahasa Inggris dasar. Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah memberikan solusi media pembelajaran dan pelatihan kepada siswa/i untuk meningkatkan kemampuan tata bahasa Inggris dasar melalui website grammar. Kegiatan diawali dengan pengumpulan data, pengembangan website grammar dan pelatihan kepada para siswa/i. Teknik yang digunakan dalam mengumpulkan data yang dibutuhkan adalah dengan observasi dan survei analisa kebutuhan siswa/i dalam pembelajaran tata bahasa dasar dipadukan dengan diskusi dan tanya jawab. Kemudian, tim pelaksana mengembangkan website grammar yang dibuat khusus untuk para siswa/i SMA Muhammadiyah Gading Rejo. Lalu, dilanjutkan dengan pelatihan penggunaan website grammar kepada para siswa/i dalam bentuk ceramah, diskusi, dan tanya jawab. Berdasarkan hasil pengabdian masyarakat dapat disimpulkan para siswa/i lebih bersemangat, termotivasi, dan lebih menyukai pelajaran tata bahasa Inggris dasar dengan memanfaatkan website grammar karena mereka dapat mengakses materi menggunakan website grammar dimanapun dan kapanpun karena dapat diakses setiap saat dengan mudah Sehingga, proses pembelajaran dapat dilaksanakan lebih efektif dan efisien.

Abstract

The use of English textbook does not only become a guide to the teachers when delivering the materials, but also presents necessary input through various explanations and activities. On the side of the learners, it also influences their attitudes and performance to the materials. This phenomenon challenges the writer to conduct research-based article concerning textbook evaluation to analyze the tasks and the distribution (simple to complex) of tasks presented in English textbook used in senior high school. The findings show that the English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas X Semester 1 has interesting tasks which meet the objectives in curriculum 2013 and a good distribution of tasks across chapters and the whole book.

Abstract

Choosing an acceptable textbook is not a simple task since it may be a key component in most language program. It serves as language input and language practice for learners. It also provides the premise for content lesson, the variety of language practice for learner, and serves as a supplement for teacher’s instruction. Teaching and learning a language without knowing its culture are useless. Culture should be taught to the students so as to dig deeper their language potential in learning English. Therefore, a textbook which is often utilized by teachers as a medium to show and help them within the process of teaching and learning should have a significant part in disseminating cultures. Culture is split into three categories: source culture, target culture, and international target culture. Some problems arise whether to keep up the source culture because the dominant part or to clarify more about the target culture. Also, the ignorance of cultural teaching commonly happens in language classroom. Thus, this paper will evaluate and explore how important cultural literacy in EFL teaching is and discuss which culture should be taught in EFL.

Abstract

DEVELOPING BILINGUAL WEB-BASED SCHOOL INFORMATION SYSTEM AT SMA MUHAMMADIYAH GADING REJO. This study aimed at developing a bilingual web-based school information system as a medium to promote and deliver school information to students, parents and community. This system is equipped with school profile information, school facilities, school achievement and documentation that can provide an overview of the school. As a result, parents can select the best school for their children in accordance with their talents and interests. The research method used is a research and development through preliminary research, design and realization. The system is developed by using PHP language and MySQL. All components of the application, which include the user interface, processing scripts and database reside on the server. The website is http://smamuhammadiyahgadingrejo.com.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine about how the attitude of using the memorization strategy towards students' learning activities. This research using a quantitative methods. The sample of this research were 38 students from English Education in a private university. They consist of male and female sixth-semester students. The research instrument in the form of a questionnaire obtained through google form, then the data will be analyzed using SPSS to find out how students' attitudes towards the learning strategy of memorization. The results of this study indicate that the student's attitude towards the memorization learning strategy show a positive attittude, it can be seen from the results of the questionnaire that has been filled out by the participants. According to their responses, the memorization strategy also made it easier for them to absorb lesson information. These findings can be used by teachers or lecturers to apply the memorization strategy as an effective learning strategy for the students.

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of text feature walks strategy in helping students in higher education to improve their critical reading comprehension through the expository texts. It also explored the feedback from students related to the implementation of Text Feature Walks in the virtual classroom. There were 40 students of English Education Study Program in a private university becoming the sample in this study and they were equally divided into experimental and control groups. To measure their improvement in reading comprehension, all students were given pre- and post reading tests in the form of multiple choice. The data obtained were analyzed by using paired sample and independent sample t-tests. The results of paired sample t-test showed that there was a significant improvement in reading (Md=33.13, p=0.000) in experimental group. In addition, the result of independent sample t-test indicated that there were significant difference in reading (Md=39.70, p=0.000) of both groups.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji penggunaan strategi kemitraan guru dengan pustakawan sekolah dalam meningkatkan keterampilan literasi bahasa Inggris siswa. Empat puluh lima siswa dari satu sekolah menengah pertama dipilih secara acak sebagai sampel. Untuk melihat kemajuan yang dicapai siswa diberikan tes formatif dan pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan tes membaca dan menulis sebelum dan sesudah intervensi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa di antara kedua keterampilan tersebut, pencapaian signifikan siswa tertinggi ada pada keterampilan membaca.

Abstract

Pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan media pembelajaran dalam proses belajar mengajar Dasar Grammar bahasa Inggris dalam bentuk website dan memberikan pelatihan kepada para guru dalam menggunakan website grammar. Pengabdian dilakukan di SMA Muhammadiyah Gading Rejo untuk meningkatkan tata bahasa Inggris Dasar siswa kelas X. Metode pengembangan media pembelajaran yang digunakan adalah Research and Development (RD). Media pembelajaran yang dikembangkan adalah media berbasis website. Dalam mengembangkan dan mendesain website terdapat tahap-tahap yang dilakukan yaitu mengidentifikasi tujuan dan sasaran, melakukan analisis instruksional, menentukan perilaku masuk dan karakteristik pelajar, menulis tujuan kinerja, mengembangkan penilaian e-Learning yang mengacu pada kriteria, mengembangkan instruksional Strategi e-Learning, memilih materi pembelajaran dan aktivitas online, melakukan evaluasi formatif, dan melakukan evaluasi sumatif. Kemudian dilaksanakan pelatihan untuk para guru dengan tujuan meningkatkan penguasaan kompetensi guru dalam menggunakan website sebagai inovasi pembelajaran e-leraning.Pelatihan dilakukan dalam bentuk ceramah, tanya jawab, diskusi dan demonstrasi. Hasil yang dicapai dalam kegiatan ini adalah para guru peserta pelatihan telah meningkatkan kemampuannya dalam mengupload materi pembelajaran, menyampaikan materi dan tugas serta melakukan evaluasi berbasis website.

Abstract

Involving students to participate in overcrowded classrooms activities is a challenging problem faced by teachers. They may spend much time to make students pay attention and concentrate on managing classroom activities. In Indonesia, many classrooms still go beyond thirty students, and it is common to be more than forty students in a class. As a result, the students are halfhearted and reluctant to participate actively in classroom activities. Promoting interactive activities such as forcing students’ engagement in group discussion and presentation seem to be alternative ways to aid students to learn English in a meaningful way and make them communicate effectively in English during teaching and learning process. Thus, the aim of this paper is to highlight some interactive activities for effective learning which can motivate and engage students with learning activities and create their interest in learning English in overcrowded classrooms.
