Abstract

This research aims at capturing and characterizing clause complexes in Lampung language by considering the structure and conjunction. Here, it focuses on paratactic configuration. A Lampung paratactic configuration consists of two or more independent clauses and is also recognized by the presence of conjunction and punctuation. The conjunction bridges two or more clauses in clause complexes and signs a relation between and among those clauses. There are six conjunctions found; those are ‘ghik’, ‘kidang’, ‘tapi’, ‘sedengko’, ‘jadi’, and ‘bahko’. Regarding how those conjunctions relate clauses, this research found four types of relation; those are additional relation realized by ‘ghik’ and ‘bahko’, comparative and contrastive relation performed by ‘kidang’, ‘tapi’, ‘sedengko’ and then consequential relation shown by ‘jadi’. Other than conjunction, the punctuation is also found to connect clauses; it is comma. It is noteworthy that comma connects two independent clauses and semantically construes additional relation since comma is found in configuration of two clauses in which a clause adds more detail information or more explanation for another one. Besides, comma is also found in a paratactic configuration consisting of three clauses, here it is configured with a conjunction such as ‘ghik’. Furthermore, this research also found four variants of paratactic configuration; those are Independent clause - conjunction - Independent clause; Independent clause - conjunction - Independent clause + dependent clause; Independent clause + Dependent cause - conjunction - Independent clause; Independent clause + Dependent clause - conjunction - Independent clause + Dependent clause.

Abstract

Suffix-nya is one of suffixes in Bahasa Indonesia which has various functions. Those varieties cause various forms of equivalent translation in English. Thus, this research aims at investigating the equivalent translation of suffix-nya and its functions. Applying documentary research, the researchers gathered the data in form of Indonesian sentence consisting suffix-nya and its translation from a novel Laskar Pelangi and its English version The Rainbow Troops. Further, this research was conducted under the qualitative method. The result of the analysis shows various equivalent translations and their functions. It is finally reported that the suffix-nya has six alternative equivalent translations; they are pronoun (his, her, their, its, he, his, her, them, and it), apostrophe (-‘s), article (the), demonstrative (this), adverb (-ly), and verb (modal + auxiliary: would be and should have, copular verb; seem). Other than the equivalents, there are seven functions found; they are possessive marker, objective pronoun, subjective pronoun, definite article, deictic marker, adverbial former, and predicate. Dealing with the context of sentences or discourse and understanding it helps to decide the best equivalent translation for suffix –nya which is pertained to a particular constituent of the sentences.Keywords: context, equivalent translation, function of the equivalence, suffix -nya PADANAN BAHASA INGGRIS UNTUK SUFIKS -NYAAbstrakSufiks –nya merupakan salah satu bentuk sufiks dalam bahasa Indonesia yang memiliki  beragam fungsi. Ragam fungsi tersebut memunculkan beberapa bentuk terjemahan dalam bahasa Inggris. Berkenaan dengan hal tersebut, penelitian ini menilik padanan dan fungsi sufiks –nya.  Sejalan dengan menerapkan analisis dokumen, data dikumpulkan dalam bentuk kalimat yang memiliki sufiks –nya dalam novel Laskar Pelangi dan terjemahan kalimat tersebut dalam novel The Rainbow Troops. Lebih jauh, metode kualitatif diaplikasikan dalam penelitian ini. Berdasarkan hasil analisis, dapat dilaporkan bahwa terdapat enam bentuk padanan untuk sufiks –nya, yaitu pronomina (his, her, their, its, he, his, her, them, dan it), apostrof (-‘s), artikel (the), demonstratif (this), adverbia (-ly), and verba (modal + kata kerja bantu (auxiliary): would be and should have, verba kopula: seem). Selain padanan tersebut, terdapat tujuh fungsi yang ditemukan, yakni penanda posesif (possessive marker), objektif pronominal, subjektif pronominal, artikel definit (definite article), penanda deiktis (deictic marker), pembentuk adverbia (adverbial former), dan predikat (predicate). Selain itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa mengaitkan pada konteks kalimat dan memahaminya secara utuh merupakan langkah dalam menentukan dan mencari padanan sufiks –nya yang melekat pada konsituen tertentu dalam kalimat.Kata kunci: fungsi padanan, konteks, padanan, sufiks –nya,  terjemahan

Abstract

Penelitian ini menginvestigasi fungsi pemarkah wacana dan pengetahuan mahasiswa mengenai pemarkah tersebut. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan melalui video-recording dan transkripsi. Analisis data menggunakan teori Brinton dan Alami. Penelitian ini menemukan seluruh jenis fungsi tekstual, yaitu sequence, repair, opening and closing frame markers, filler, information indicator, topic switcher, dan turn taker. Namun, fungsi interpersonal jarang ditemukan karena pembicara hanya berfokus pada penyampaian materi. Lebih jauh dapat dikatakan bahwa pembicara memiliki keterbatasan pengetahuan mengenai pemarkah wacana sehingga kerap menggunakan pemarkah yang sama. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini menyarankan dosen untuk memperhatikan masalah ini dan menjadikan ini sebagai salah satu butir dalam penilaian.Kata Kunci: pemarkah wacana, fungsi tekstual dan interpersonal FUNCTIONS OF DISCOURSE MARKERS: A CASE STUDY OF A SPEAKING CLASS AT TERTIARY EDUCATIONAbstractThis study aimed to investigate functions of and students’ familiarity with discourse markers. This was a qualitative study. The data were collected through video-recording and transcription. The data analysis used Brinton’s and Alami’s theories. The study revealed all textual functions, i.e.: sequence, repair, opening and closing frame markers, filler, information indicator, topic switcher, and turn taker. The interpersonal function was almost never found because the speaker only focused on delivering materials. Further, it was noted that the speaker had limited knowledge of discourse markers so that the same discourse markers were often used. The study thus suggested the lecturer should take these into account in the assessment.Keywords: discourse markers, textual and interpersonal functions

Abstract

This research presents a configuration of relational clause which does not have a relational process. Such a process is called zero relational process. However, this non-process relational clause has an alternative process which is called attributive/identifying processor demonstrated by the attribute or identifying processor demonstrated by the value and token. Accordingly, this research argues that both attribute and value are connected to the carrier and the token syntactically and semantically because they function to predicate carrier and token through modifying (attribute) and identifying-representing-defining (value). In other words, an attribute can function as the attribute (modifier) and the process (attributive processor) while a value can function as the value (identifier) and the process (identifying processor). Furthermore, it is found that an attribute can construe the characteristics of a carrier and demonstrate numerical information (number, grade, and quantity). On the other hand, a value provides identity, representation, and definition for the token.

Abstract

This study aims at coming up with English competence at hotel. Going along with that aim, this study focuses on one hotel in Bandar Lampung which has been developing; it is Novotel hotel. This chosen hotel meets with the criteria of hotel targeted. Further, this study was conducted qualitatively because it pursued deep findings dealing with English competence of some duties in hotel, such as reception and handling guest. Besides, questioner was employed to gather data and then interview was also conducted to have more concrete data. At last, this study came up with the detail findings of the average of English proficiency based on the positions. Furthermore, this study formulated the common expressions used to host and serve customers.

Abstract

This research discusses Indonesian relative clauses compared to its translation of English in the short story Clara atawa Wanita yang Diperkosa. The aim of this research is to configure and describe the differences and similarities of relative clauses in Indonesian and English. In this research, the researchers applied the qualitative method since the researchers gave detailed descriptions and explanations of the lingual phenomena from existing documents exploratively. This research found that the patterns of relative clauses in Indonesian and English perform similarities and differences. A similar pattern found is RP-V-O/Adjunct, while the difference is caused by structural shiftings happening in translating process. Furthermore, there are three equivalents for the relative pronoun ‘yang’, they are who, which, and that. Moreover, ‘yang’ is not always translated when the translation is constructed in a deep structure construction. Furthermore, this research presents the alternative ways to choose the appropriate English relative pronoun to translate the Indonesian relative pronoun.

Abstract

An allusion is a reference to a well-known person, place, event, literary work, or work of art. The main purpose of this research is to find the allusion in the selected poems of Aeschylus The Battle of Salamis and The Sacrifice of Iphigenia and critically analyze the poems to explore and describe the story and mythology behind the expressions in each line. This research is conducted qualitatively and applies purposive sampling to choose and gather the data. It can be reported that both poems represent Greek mythology and history. The representation is derived from expressions, which are in the form of words and sentences. It is found that the allusion found contains names of figures in Greek mythology, such as god-goddess (Artemis), kings (Agamemnon, Atreus), and places (Strymon). These become the references to convey the meaning and to deliver the message of the poems. Regarding these names, the poet connects his idea in the poem to the Greek story and mythology. In addition, there are three functions of allusion confirmed in this research; those are delineating the character, carrying the theme, creating humor. Accordingly, it is noteworthy that allusion can be used to identify the correlation between a particular text and reality, history, and even mythology. In this case, it is noteworthy that allusion is not only a reference, but it also makes expression in the poem more vivid, flowery, interesting, and attractive.

Abstract

Guru sebagai garda terdepan dalam pendidikan dituntut untuk bisa mengelola pembelajaran yang efektif dan efisien dan tuntutan ini berlanjut ke arah pembelajaran dalam jaringan (daring) ketika masa pandemi melanda. Di lain pihak, tidak semua sekolah memiliki infrastruktur jaringan komputer dan internet yang memadai sehingga ini menjadi kendala untuk penyelenggaraan pembelajaran daring. Terkait dengan hal tersebut, tim dosen Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia berupaya memberikan solusi, yaitu dengan melaksanakan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat berupa pelatihan pengelolaan dan pengaturan Google sites. Hal ini dikarenakan aplikasi Google sites bersifat fleksible dan dapat digunakan dengan mudah serta tidak membutuhkan infrastruktur jaringan komputer dan internet yang mahal. Adapun pelaksanaan pelatihan ini menyasar pada guru SMAN 1 Kotagajah. Penentuan ini didasarkan pada need analysis survey. Kemudian pelaksanaan pelatihan terdiri dari tiga tahap, yaitu pengenalan, demonstrasi, dan praktik. Ketiga tahap tersebut berjalan dengan lancar dan dapat disimpulkan bahwa pengetahuan dan keterampilan guru dalam pengelolaan dan pengaturan kegiatan belajar mengajar daring melalui aplikasi Google sites meningkat dan mampu memadukannya dengan aplikasi Google yang lain. Kepala sekolah dan guru merespon positif kegiatan pelatihan ini dan diharapkan dapat berlanjut pada kegiatan-kegiatan teaching refreshment lain. Lebih jauh, pengaplikasian teknologi pada pembelajaran sangat membantu apalagi jika pembelajaran dilaksanakan secara daring.

Abstract

Sekitar 74% penduduk Indonesia merupakan pengguna internet aktif. Data tersebut menunjukkan bahwa revolusi belajar di era digital merupakan peluang yang sangat besar dengan tujuan agar siswa dapat mempunyai pengetahuan yang luas, selalu relevan, dan sesuai dengan minat dan gaya belajar siswa. Beberapa studi juga menunjukan terdapat hubungan yang erat antara kemampuan Bahasa Inggris dan Matematika. Kemampuan Bahasa Inggris memengaruhi kemampuan Matematisnya dan berkalu sebaliknya. Studi secara mendalam menemukan bahwa terdapat sub-area dalam literasi membaca yang memberikan pengaruh besar pada literasi matematika. Namun, ironisnya, Matematika dan Bahasa Inggris menjadi mata pelajaran yang memiliki nilai rerata paling rendah, terutama di SMK Amal Bhakti, Jatimulyo Lampung Selatan. Selain itu, sekolah juga mayoritas tidak mengatikan secara langsung, baik secara teknis maupun non teknis antara literasi Matematika dan Bahasa Inggris karena dianggap merupakan literasi yang saling terpisah. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk menunjukan bahwa terdapat hubungan langsung antara kemampuan Matematika dan Bahasa Inggris, terutama bahwa Pembelajran Matematikan dengan Bahasa Inggris dapat meningkatkan kemampuan matematis Siswa. Oleh karena itu, tim melakukan pelatihan di SMK Amal Bhakti Jatimulyo Lampung Selatan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris dalam Pembelajaran Matematika sehingga secara tidak langsung kemampuan Matematis Siswa juga dapat meningkat. Hasil pelatihan menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan antara kemampuan siswa melalui pretest (sebelum pelatihan) dan posttest (setelah pelatihan). Adapun nilai pretest sebesar 39 dan nilai posttest sebesar 77 dengan nilai p-value menggunakan Uji Mann Whitney-U sebesar 0.005 < 0.05. Artinya terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan kemampuan siswa setelah melaksanakan pelatihan penggunaan Bahasa Inggris dalam Pembelajaran Matematika.

Abstract

Public Speaking is one of the most important skills one should have. In the industrial 4.0 era, the ability to speak and elaborate on certain issues and topics in front of the public is highly significant due to the fact that now information can no longer be limited. Information is available on the internet, especially on social media. Therefore, in order to avoid misunderstanding the content of the information, public speaking ability is needed. The ability helps people to grasp information correctly. Moreover, the public speaking ability also teaches how to convince people which will be useful for those who are working and also for job seekers. This article discusses the public speaking skills of SMA Way Jepara students, especially in grades 11 and 12. The students are encouraged to practice their speaking ability. They are given some materials and topics that would help them to be more confident. After the 2nd meeting was conducted most of the students were able to gain a much better speaking ability and they also became more confident.
