Abstract

City branding has become a massive effort by many cities as tourist destinations to promote the city nationally and internationally. Ambon City, the Capital of Maluku Province, known as the “City of Music,” and the City of Solo with “Solo the Spirit of Java,” are examples of city branding. In North Maluku Province, Ternate City has a long history of colonialism, international trade, and a developing city. Unfortunately, inconsistencies still exist in how the city should be known. This study aims to identify and define city branding by using the constructivist grounded theory method. The themes identified were quality tourism, economic value, community engagement, stakeholder consensus, legendary ancient leadership, and historic and renowned commodity. Six main themes are theoretically based on how to branding Ternate city and involving seven important participants. These themes are then used to define the branding of Ternate City. Current research offers a testable model to brand a place or city based on the identified subjects. At the same time, potential future studies are also suggested regarding the weaknesses of the current study.

Abstract

Secularism has been entering every aspect of life, including a micro-level of financial management of a family. This study sheds light on how religious views can be used to minimize the influence of secularism. This study was mainly aimed at demonstrating how sacred goals in Muslim families, through Sakeenah values, can be used as an antidote to secularism practices in managing family finance. Thirteen contextual characteristics of financial management in eight Muslim families were identified using the Grounded Theory method. These characteristics were used to verify main concepts—basic financial management, family structure, Sakeenah elements, and a form of secularism—usury. Using the Grounded Theory method was also the other aim of this study that demonstrated its use to deepen the interrelation between those four main concepts and those characteristics contextually. Several limitations surfaced after the analyses, and this allowed recommendations for future studies.

Abstract

Main objective: This research aims to explore the aspects of citizen satisfaction with basic government infrastructures, using a specific seaport as the site for the research. Background problems: Their impacts of on people’s lives of basic infrastructures that the Indonesian government is currently developing should be measured, particularly how satisfied citizens are with these infrastructures. Extant literature indicates there has been limited discussion using qualitative research—which has mainly used the grounded theory approach—to understand citizen satisfaction. This context has rarely been used to explore users’ satisfaction with the local seaport. Novelty: This current research offers theoretically grounded and real aspects of citizen satisfaction that lead to a testable model to enrich a comprehensive conversation of customer satisfaction in the public sector. Methods: This research has used a grounded theory approach to define and explore, in depth, the main aspects of satisfaction felt by citizens who are the customers frequently using the seaport to enable their mobility between the islands. Results: The results identify five main aspects of citizen satisfaction when using local seaports. These aspects were used to revisit the dimensions of SERVQUAL. The sentiments of the users were also recognized and analyzed as a part of an overall evaluation of the satisfaction. Conclusion: While previous studies have provided a great deal of evidence on citizen satisfaction, the results of this study are drawn from an in-depth examination of those earlier pieces of evidence, including those regarding emotions and sentiments. Future studies are also recommended to overcome some of the limitations of this research.

Abstract

With more than thirty thousand islands, local seaports in the Province of North Maluku, the largest maritime province in Indonesia are vital in ensuring the movements of goods and people as a part of equally distributing resources for regional and national development. The users of public goods and services tend to be seen as regular customers as they are in the private sector. In fact, they should be more seen in the context of citizen satisfaction, as they do as customer satisfaction. This research aims to examine the stronger predictors of local seaport users’ satisfaction, as they are seen as citizen satisfaction. This research used predictors identified from an early explorative study and used them to question255 respondents from 9 local seaports across the Province of North Maluku. The descriptive statistics showed that most of the respondents were from Sanana; traveled on the personal purposes; were in the productive groups of age; and were mostly males. In terms of the items of the questionnaires, the least responded answers were more concerned about facility and payment.  These results provided a preliminary description on the satisfaction aspects of the local seaport users in the Province of North Maluku—the maritime province.
