Abstract

Approximately, 325 cultivars of bananas were found in Indonesia. They have variation in shape, taste, color of fruit pulp, essential vitamins and mineral. The β-carotene is one of essential nutrient in banana with various concentration in every cultivar. The aims of this research were to describe the morphological characteristics and to analyze β-carotene content of mature fruits of three different genomic groups of Indonesian dessert and cooking banana cultivars namely Berlin (AA/dessert), Barangan (AAA/dessert), and Kepok (ABB/cooking). Morphological characterizations of fruits were conducted according to Descriptor for Banana from International Plant Genetic Resources Institute. The β-carotene content of mature banana pulp was analyzed using High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method with three replications. Banana fruit characters were analyzed based on 15 descriptors. The bananas were then subjected to clustering analysis.  The result showed that β-carotene content  were 27 μg 100g-1, 5 µg 100g-1, and 3 μg 100g-1 fresh weight respectively. Berlin showed the highest value of β-carotene. Cluster analyses formed two groups. The first group consists of Berlin and Barangan while the second one consists of Kepok. This study can be used as a a reference for people to consume bananas with high content of β-carotene in meeting the needs of vitamin A and as a consideration for the plant breeding especially for β-carotene improvement purpose.

Abstract

Two problem solving cycles are problem-based learning with two learning cycles that can improve students' higher order thinking skills. The knowledge of reproductive health is needed by the student, due to the student as future generation must be ready to facing the reproductive health problem in the future. This study aimed to determine the differences in learning two problem solving cycles on students' higher-order thinking skills. The population of this study were students of SMA Negeri 02 Sekayam-West Kalimantan with a sample of class XI IPA 1 and XI IPA 2. Students were given 12 questions as essay test in the beginning and end of the cycles. Data were analyzed using the Mann Whitney U test. Research shows that there are significant differences in learning towards higher-order thinking skills with learning two problem solving cycles (sig. 0.015 < 0.05). Hence, it could be concluded that two problem solving cycles could be applied in learning material on the reproductive system.

Abstract

Falcataria moluccana is important for reforestation and afforestation in Indonesia. However, epidemic of gall rust disease in F. moluccana plantations decreases its productivity. Genetic engineering is an alternative solution to against gall rust disease. Somatic embryogenesis is an efficient in vitro plant regeneration for successful plant improvement through genetic engineering. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of thidiazuron and light treatments on the induction of somatic embryogenesis of F. moluccana. The effects of thidiazuron concentration (5, 10 or 15 μM) and light (continuous light, 7 days of dark followed by light, or continuous dark) on the induction of somatic embryogenesis in leaf explants were assessed. The highest production of somatic embryos was obtained in 5 μM thidiazuron and dark treatments for 7 days followed by light in Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with 1.2 g/L proline. Histological analysis in globular and cotyledon stages confirmed that cells had progressed to secondary somatic embryogenesis. This research needs more improvements to become a successful and efficient somatic embryogenesis method and as a potential method for successful plant improvement through genetic engineering in F. moluccana.

Abstract

Borneo Island has a large number of wild banana species. As a part of Borneo Island, West Kalimantan has limited information about the diversity of wild bananas. This research aims to update the record distribution of wild bananas from Bonti District of Sanggau Regency and to determine their morphological characteristics. Exploration method and resident information were used in this study. Two species of wild bananas have been identified and considered as new distribution records in West Kalimantan Province, namely-Musa borneensis var. sarawakensis with morphological character pseudostem red-purple colour, sparse black-purple blotches at petiole base, leaf base shape rounded on both sides, male bud red-purple colour and Musa campestris var. sarawakensis with morphological character pseudostem yellow-green colour, inflorescence erect, leaf base one side rounded and one-pointed, the dorsally pink-purple and ventrally pink-purple colour of bract.

Abstract

Background: Education is very important in advancing a nation. Understanding is obtained when learning activities take place. However, with the Covid-19 pandemic condition, the government issued an online system learning policy, this will affect students' understanding of concepts, especially in biology subjects. Based on the results of a pre-research questionnaire given to biology teachers at SMA N 1 Sungai Raya, the completeness of cross-interest class students in Fungi material was less than 70% in the year before the covid-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study was to describe the understanding of the concept of cross-interest class students on Fungi material at SMA N 1 Sungai Raya during the covid-19 pandemic. Methods: This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The research subjects were students of class X cross-interest at SMA N 1 Sungai Raya. The method used is to provide a two tier test instrument through the google form application. Results: The results showed that 41% of students understood the concept, 24% of students who had misconceptions, 15% of students who guessed, and 20% of students who did not understand the concept. Keywords : Concept Understanding; Cross-Interest Classes; Fungic Matter; Covid-19 Pandemic

Abstract

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is very much felt in learning activities in schools so there is a need for appropriate learning media to make it easier for students to capture learning material. This study aims to determine the development of infographic video media in ten-grade IPA SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak. The research instrument used was a material expert validation questionnaire and a student response questionnaire. This type of research is Research and Development (R&D) model four D (Define, Design, Development, Dissemination). The results of the analysis show that the infographic video media developed is valid based on the validation results of media, material, and language experts. The percentage of validity of media, material, and language experts are 95.83%, 90.87%, and 97.50%, respectively, with very valid criteria, that can be used but need minor revisions. The percentage of the results of the questionnaire responses to the small-scale test and the large-scale test were 80.65% and 83.59%, respectively, with very strong criteria. This shows a positive response from students. Thus, the infographic video media that has been developed is appropriate to be used as a teaching medium for the material on biodiversity in ten-grade IPA SMA Muahmmadiyah 1 Pontianak.

Abstract

Profile of students’ creative thinking and conceptual understanding is essential to create an initial description of students’ competencies in overcoming their learning difficulties. The research aims to describe profile of concept understanding and creative thinking skills of 7thgrade students of all SMP Negeri (public junior high school) in Rasau Jaya sub-district, Kubu Raya Regency, West Kalimantan, Indonesia in photosynthesis content. The research uses qualitative descriptive method. The sampling technique employs disproportionate stratified random sampling. Samples consist of 143 students of 7th grade from three SMP Negeri in Rasau Jaya Sub-district, Kuburaya Regency, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The data collection technique utilizes creative thinking skill test in the form of an essay with fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration aspects. Students’ concept understanding test is in the form of four-tier diagnostic test. Data analysis employs descriptive statistics with percentage of creative thinking and conceptual understanding in categories of understanding, partial understanding, misconception, and not understanding. The creative thinking skill percentage of SMPN students in Rasau Jaya, Indonesia in the originality and flexibility aspect is in a fairly creative category, whereas in the elaboration and fluency aspect the category is still less creative. The highest percentage of students’ conceptual understanding is misconception of 45.25% and followed by an understanding of 30.64%, not understand of 13.2%, and partial understanding of 10.97%. The obtained data give evidence that natural sciences (IPA) learning knowledge among junior high school students, especially concept understanding and creative thinking, is still low. Therefore, teachers could develop students’ creative thinking skills so their concept understanding could be improved.
