Abstract

Teaching English as a foreign language is a difficult and challenging job to do since the ability of learners in receiving the lesson may differ from one to another. A teacher is required to be creative and innovative in designing the syllabus and activity to be conducted in class. One of the ways to teach English is by using Google Translate. As everyone knows that google translate is a tool provided by Google Inc that enables the user to get the meaning of the source language into the target language. Therefore the aims of the study are, (1) to know the advantages and disadvantages in using Google Translate for Indonesian EFL learners, (2) to know what English proficiency skill can be develop by using Google Translate. The respondent of this study are student in the second semester of English Department, Udayana University. This study uses the descriptive qualitative method in describing the finding and a set of questionnaire will be given to the respondent to know their opinion about using Google Translate during their learning process. An observation method is also conducted to know the improvement of the English proficiency made by the learners. The findings shows that, there are both advantages and disadvantages in using Google Translate for Englishlanguage learning, the advantages are learners are able to enrich their vocabulary because it provide the synonym, learners will know how to pronoun a word correctly and the disadvantages is learners may find the wrong meaning of a word.And lastly, the findings show that by using Google Translate a learner can develop their vocabulary, speaking skill, and also their grammar.

Abstract

Di era globalisasi ini, bahasa Inggris telah menjadi bahasa utama untuk pendidikan dan teknologi, bisnis, kesehatan, hukum dan lain-lain. Bahasa Inggris telah diakui oleh semua orang di dunia, jika mereka ingin bersaing dalam setiap aspek kehidupan yang harus mereka kuasai adalah bahasa Inggris. Peneliti dan guru diharuskan untuk menjadi kreatif dan inovatif dalam mengembangkan rencana pelajaran untuk belajar bahasa Inggris, salah satu cara untuk mengajar bahasa Inggris adalah dengan mengajarkan debat kompetitif dalam Bahasa Inggris. Debat adalah proses komunikasi dimana peserta diwajibkan untuk mengusulkan atau menentang suatu topik tertentu. Dalam melakukan debat, peserta atau yang dikenal sebagai pendebat harus memanfaatkan semua kemampuan mereka pada saat yang sama seperti kemampuan berbicara, keterampilan mendengar dan keterampilan berpikir kritis. Keterampilan ini sebenarnya adalah dasar untuk mengembangkan kemampuan dasar berbahasa Inggris. Oleh karena itu, tujuan dari penelitian ini (1) kemampuan skill berbahasa Inggris  yang mana saja yang dapat dikembangkan dengan cara mengajar bahasa Inggris melalui latihan debat dan (2) apakah dengan mempelajari debat dapat secara signifikan mempengaruhi perkembangan Bahasa Inggris mahasiswa, dan (3) bagaimana cara mengajar Bahasa Inggris melalui praktik debat. Responden dari penelitian ini adalah siswa semester 1-3 Jurusan Bahasa Inggris, Universitas Udayana. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dalam mendeskripsikan temuan dan metode observasi juga dilakukan untuk mengetahui peningkatan kemampuan bahasa Inggris yang dilakukan oleh siswa. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa belajar bahasa Inggris melalui praktik debat dapat memberi beberapa manfaat seperti berbagi pendapat tentang isu-isu tertentu, meningkatkan kepercayaan siswa untuk berbicara di depan umum, mengembangkan keterampilan bahasa, memperbaiki pemikiran kritis dan merangsang siswa intelektual untuk memecahkan masalah dan memberikan resolusi. Dan terakhir, temuan juga menunjukkan bahwa belajar bahasa Inggris melalui praktik debat dapat mengembangkan kemampuan berbicara, keterampilan mendengar, keterampilan membaca dan keterampilan menulis teks argumentatif. Kata Kunci: debat, skill dasar bahasa inggris, pengajaranDOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/aksara/v20i1.pp44-54

Abstract

Abstract: The title of this research is women’s language used by the characters in Brave movie. It aims to analyze the types of female language used by the characters in Brave movie. The data source is taken from the Brave movie script. The data was collected by reading the movie script and choosing which part contains women’s language in movie "Brave" script. The qualitative descriptive method is used in analyzing it using the theory of Lakoff (1975). The results showed that 5 types of 9 women's languages were found in the Brave movie script. They are intensifiers, rising intonation, emphatic stress, lexical hedges, and super polite form.

Abstract

The title of this study is The Analysis of Slang Words in Romantic Comedy Movie entitled 500 Days of Summer. This study aims at categorizing the types and functions of slang used by the characters in the 500 Days of Summer. In this study, the method of collecting data were the documentation and observation method, then the data were analyzed using the content analysis method using the theory proposed by Allan and Burridge (2006). According to Allan and Burridge (2006), there are five types of slang namely fresh and creative, flippant, imitative, acronym, and clipping. Furthermore, there are seven functions of slang namely to address, to initiate relax conversation, to humiliate, to form intimate atmosphere, to express impression, to reveal anger, and to show intimacy. The result of this study reveals that all the types of slang proposed by Allan and Burridge (2006) were used by the characters in the movie entitled 500 Days of Summer. Moreover, six out of seven functions of slang proposed by Allan and Burridge (2006) were employed by the characters in the 500 Days of Summer movie script, only to form intimate atmosphere did not employ by the characters in the movie script.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the intrinsic and extrinsic structures contained in the short story "A Gospel According to Joan" written by Wilkins Freeman. By knowing in depth the contents of these elements, we can find out what the author wants to convey in this story, besides that we can also find out the expressions that the author uses through the work she writes. The primary source of the data is the short story “A Gospel According to Joan”. Secondary source of data is taken from journal and article that related to this study. This paper work that has drawn on or being influenced by Fauzan (2016) and Nicholes (2015). This analysis focuses on the structure, point of view, characterization, interpretation, meaning, and extrinsic elements of the story. This story was first published in Harper’s Monthly Magazine (December, 1919), With a twist, Freeman's story is about charity and compassion. Who's to say what's right or wrong when it's for charity? When a young girl named Joan, the down-and-out minister's daughter, knocked on Sarah's door to sell her familiar hand-work linens just before Christmas, who's to say what's right or wrong? "I was almost ready to mortgage the place to buy her out until I saw that adorable young child, the perfect picture of my dear lost Ida."  This story also shows the anger of Sarah’s relative, Lottie, that she didn’t  have to resemble that child in her own flesh and blood, Lottie doesn't want Ida to be likened to a thief.   Keywords: intrinsic extrinsic analysis, short story

Abstract

Speech functions is a study of a variety of utterances used and their function in speech. Utterances are produced during conversations in daily life, including the function of speech. This study aims to analyze whether the speech function occurs in the movie entitled “Over the Moon”, which talks about the adventure of a girl named Fei Fei. The data was taken from the movie and its script. The data were analyzed by using the qualitative descriptive method, through observation and note-taking as methods and techniques to collect the data. The theory used in this study is proposed by Holmes (2013). There are six categories of speech functions namely: expressive, directive, referential, metalinguistic, poetic, and phatic functions. The result shows that out of the six categories, there are five categories of speech functions found in the movie: expressive, directive, referential, poetic, and phatic. Among the five functions, the directive is the most used speech function in the conversation of the movie. The function of speech can differ, depending on the data source used. Each data source has a different plot, theme, style, setting, and situation when the dialogues occur.

Abstract

Women's voices in a struggle against oppression are still very minimal to be heard. The purpose of this research is to find out the representation of liberal feminism that is used in the utterances in the short story “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin. This data was collected by qualitative method with documentation technique. The result of this study is the story contains about discrimination of women in marital status through the dialogue of the characters, paying attention to the behavior and actions of the characters in the story. The researcher found seven pieces of data that included the types of liberal feminism, such as equal liberty, equal right, and equal freedom. The conclusion of this study explains that the main character reflects liberal feminism. Mrs. Mallard as the main character implicitly feels unlucky in her marriage as a wife. In the end, she got her freedom back after her husband died.
