Abstract

Abstract: This study was conducted to analyse the grammatical errors made by second semester students in writing paragraph at the English Study Program of Universitas Riau. The aim of this study was to find out eight types of common grammatical errors they are Passive Voice, Verb Tense and Form, Subject- Verb Agreement, Word Order, Preposition, Articles, Plurality, and Auxiliary that made by the participants of the study.Writing a paragraph test were administered to twenty seven participants. They were asked to write a paragraph in 90 minutes and based on the three topics provided by the writer. Three raters were involved in checking the grammatical errors on the participants’ paragraph writing. Then, the errors were classified and described. From the analysis, it was obtained that the participants of study made 80 errors. They were errors in terms of Verb Tense and Form (32.50%), Plurality (21.25%) and Subject-Verb Agreement (12.50%). The lowest percentage of errors was in terms of Word Order (5%) and Passive Voice (5%).Thus, it needs more concern on these aspects. Moreover, the other errors are need to be focused as well. It is recommended that other reseachers find the reasons of those comitted errors.Key Words: Error Analysis, Grammatical Errors, Writing Paragraph

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research aimed to find out the forms of code mixing by twitter users of university students, The research used Bokamba (1989) theory to determine the forms of code mixing. There are six forms of code mixing such as morpheme, word, phrase, hybrid, clause and idiom. The research was conducted at Riau University from May-June 2016. it was conducted in eight different spots. They are The Faculty of Economy, Faculty of Social and Politics, Faculty of Teachers Training and Education, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Mathematics and Science and the last is The English Department. The data and instruments used researcher’s twitter account and tweets that inserted code mixing. Researcher’s twitter account follows 286 twitter accounts that among of those are 130 Riau University student accounts. The Population of research is 130 Riau University student accounts. The researcher used purposive sampling technique. The sample is 61 Riau University student accounts because they have particular characteristics to be sampled such as their tweets used code mixing and they are university students. In addition, they also agreed to take part in this research. The result of the data showed that words was the majority of the data with 42 data then followed by morpheme with 39 data and phrase has 14 data while the fewer of data is hybrid is three (3), clause is one (1) and the last is idiom has four (4) data.Key words: Sociolinguistics, Code mixing, Twitter

Abstract

Abstract: This experimental research aimed to measure how significant the effects of teaching metacognitive strategy in comprehending reading texts and the correlation between the variables. The sample of this research was the second year students of SMA Negeri 12 Pekanbaru. The participants were 35 students. The Null hypothesis was: There is no significant effect of teaching metacognitive strategy towards students reading comprehension achievement. The Alternative hypothesis was: There is a significant effect of teaching metacognitive strategy toward students reading comprehension achievement. The data were collected by means of reading comprehension test. The reliability of the test was 0.68 (high). The research finding revealed that: (a) the mean score of post-test (84.9) was higher than the mean score of pre-test (72.2) after the treatment. It means there was an enhancement to the mean score of the students. (b) after being calculated, it was found that the standard deviation and standard error for pre-test respectively were 9.41 and 1.56 while for post-test were 7.11 and 1.21. (c) the correlation (rxy) between the variables was 0.971 (very strong). (d) the value of “t” observed was 26.38. The degree of freedom (df) was 34. The value of df in 34 were 2.03 (the level of significance 5%) and 2.72 (the level of significance 1%). According to data analysis of this research, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of teaching metacognitive strategy towards reading comprehension achievement by the second year students of SMA Negeri 12 pekanbaru.Keywords: Metacognitive Strategy, Teaching Metacognition, Reading Comprehension Achievement.

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this research is to improve students’ ability in writing recount text by applying STAD as one cooperative models. This is an action research with two cycles, and each cycle consists of 4 meetings. The subject of research is a class consisted of 20 students; 6 female and 14 male students of the second year students in MTs HasanahPekanbaru. The steps of the collecting data are by administering the pre test, did action, and administering the post test at end of the cycle, and also by doing observation for the teacher’s and the students’ activities at every meeting. In each meeting, the teacher explains the material, sets the students group works, sets the individual quiz, calculates the scores, and recognizes the scores. In order to analyze the data, the writer used the T test, revealed that students’ writing ability in recount text increased after the action was administered. It could be seen that the average scores of pre test was 56.83, improved 76.42 at post test I and improved again to 79.94 at post test II. The post test II showed that the students could reach the minimum standard criterion. In addition, from the observation sheets, it showed the high students’ activities in learning process in every meeting. In brief, STAD model could improve second year students’ ability of MTs HasanahPekanbaru in writing recount text. Abstract

Abstract : This pre-experimental research is aimed to find out the effect of Role Play technique on the speaking ability of the second year students of SMPN 29 Pekanbaru. The research data were collected from April to May 2016. The subject of this research was class VIII.1 which consist of 43 students. The data were collected by giving a pre-test and a post-test to the students in the form of limited picture-cued task. The data were assesed by the three raters and then analyzed using SPSS 16.0. The result of the research showed that the increase of mean score from the pre-test to the post-test was 11.79 where the score of the pre-test was 52.07 and the score of the post test was 63.86. And the result of t-obs was 19.820, mean-while the t-table values was 2,018. Therefore, it can be concluded that Role Play technique gives positive effects to the students’ speaking ability.Keywords: Role Play, Speaking Ability

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research was conducted to find out the students’ speaking ability in the language function, particularly the expressions of opinion, agreement and disagreement. The samples of this research were 27 students from XI TKJ class of SMK TELKOM Pekanbaru. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to decide the sample. The instrument used in this research was a Dialogue Completion Task which contained 12 questions. The data were analysed by calculating the students’ score individually and finding out the mean score. The data were presented by using graphic. The data showed that the student’s speaking ability was in good level with the average score 61.38. The result of students’ ability in each aspect was average level for expression of opinion (59.59), while expression of agreement (61.84) and disagreement (60.22) were in good level. Based on the finding, it was suggested that the students need to do more practice in speaking in order to help them to increase their understanding of the materials. The teacher needs to give more opportunities for the students to practice using expression of opinion, agreement and disagreement, especially practice to initiate/ask using of those expressions. Further research can focus on each subtopic in detail, particularly about expression of opinion since it was the students’ lowest score.   Key words: Ability, Speaking, Expression of opinion, agreement and disagreement

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to investigate the ability of the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Rambah in writing recount text. The problem discussed in this study is : How good is the level of the tenth grade students ability in writing recount text? The methodology of this research is descriptive quantitative research. The data of the study are recount texts made by the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Rambah. In this study, the instrument used in this research was a written test in the form of a report of science experiment. There are 7 classes for population of this research consists of 174 students. Since the material which investigated was a report of science experiment, so the writer took 69 students (X IPA 1, X IPA 2, X IPA 3) as the sample of the research selected by purposive sampling. The data of this research were collected by conducting a written test. The writer asked the students to write the scientific report based on the experiment that they have done. It might be chemistry, biology, or physics experiment. The results of data analysis showed the mean score of students’ ability in writing recount text was 70.71. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that the ability of tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Rambah in writing recount text is in good level based on Brown’s analytical scale for rating composition tasks. In relation with the result of the study, it can be suggested (1) for the students, they need more practice in writing and should pay attention to grammar and mechanics aspects, since the score of these writing aspects were low, (2) it is better to English teachers to apply appropriate methods and techniques in teaching recount text in class to the students so that they are able to write recount text well, and (2) for the next researchers, it is hoped that this research can be a source of literature review to conduct similar researches.Keywords: Writing, Ability, Students’ Writing Ability, Recount Text

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental study is aimed at finding out if there is a significant effect of Cooperative Script method on the speaking ability of the second year students of SMAN 1 Pekanbaru. The design of the study is one group pre-test-treatment-posttest design. 37 students of class XI MIA 1 in the second semester of academic year 2016/2017 were chosen as the sample by using Cluster random sampling. The instrument of the test was in the form of monologue and the treatment was conducted in six times. The students’ scores were graded by the three raters using Brown’s scale and analyzed using t-test formula.The results of the data analysis showed that the mean score of pre-test is 51.56 and the mean score of post-test is 67.44. The result showed that the value of t-test was higher than t-table (11,975>2,028) at the significance level 5% and at the significance level 2% (11,975>0,3810). Therefore, alternative hyphotesis (H1) is accepted and null hyphotesis (Ho) is rejected. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of Cooperative Script method on the improvement of speaking ability of the second year students of SMAN 1 PekanbaruKeywords: Effect, Cooperative Script Method, Speaking Ability

Abstract

Abstract: This classroom action research aims at finding out how effective the use of comic strips in the process of learning English. Writing is a productive skill that is important to be learned at school. Yet, in the process of teaching writing the teacher rarely use appropriate, joyful, and effective media which make the students feel bored. The teacher should use interesting media to motivate the students. Hence, using comic strips as media of teaching can help the students to generate ideas and explore language in a creative way, especially in narrative texts. This research would answer the research question which has been stated : ‘Can the use of comic strips improve the ninth grade students’ ability in writing narrative texts?’. The sample of this research was the ninth grade students of SMP YLPI Marpoyan Program Plus Pekanbaru. The participants were 25 students (IX-2). This research was conducted in two cycles which consisted of eight meetings. The data were obtained through pre-test, post-test cycle 1, post-test cycle 2, and observation sheet for the students and the teacher. The results of this research showed good improvements in terms of students’ participation in teaching and learning process and the students’ writing ability. The Pre-Test score was 47,86 increased to 57,95 in Post-Test Cycle 1 and increased to 78,39 in Post-Test Cycle 2. The students’ activities were also increased from 52,8% in cycle 1 to 85,2% in Cycle 2. In conclusion, comic strips could be used as media of teaching writing narrative texts to increased the students’ writing ability. Comic strips could help the students to generate ideas and also could motivate the students to follow the lesson.   Keywords: Comic Strips, Media, Writing, Narrative Text

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims at finding the ability of the second year students of English Study Program FKIP Univeritas Riau in listening to conversations. The writer used Cluster Random Sampling technique to choose the sample. There are three classes for population of this research consists of 90 students there are class A, B and C, class B was chosen as the sample consisted of 30 students. The instrument of this research was in the form of multiple choices test which consisted of tryout and sample. The test was listening test. The test had four scripts and each script had five questions based on listening question comprehension components, so there were 20 questions for the script. The writer used SPSS 16.0 Program to analyze the data. Based on the results, there are two students in the excellent level (6,7%), and eleven of the students (36, 7%) were at good level, 33,3% were at mediocre level, and 23, 3% was at poor level. So, from the result of the calculation, the majority of student’s ability in listening comprehension on conversation was at good level. The data also indicated that the highest score obtained by students was 85 while the lowest score was 30, and for each classification of question, the mean score of the students’ ability for finding main idea was 65,33 finding detail was 42,00, identifying inference was 66,00 and identifying restatement was 52,00. It means that identifying detail was the students’ lowest score and finding main idea was the students’ highest score of the second year students especially students from class B of English study program FKIP-UR in listening comprehension on conversations.Key Words: Ability,Conversation, Listening Comprehension
