Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research aimed to find out the ability of the second year students of SMAN 1 Benai in reading comprehension of analytical exposition text and to know the students’ lowest and highest score of reading comprehension components. The problems to be discussed are: how is the ability of the second year students of SMAN 1 Benai in reading comprehension of analytical exposition and which component is the students’ lowest and highest score in reading comprehension. The population of this research is all of the second year students of SMAN 1 Benai with the total is 170 students. The writer used Cluster Random Sampling technique to decide the research sample. This research used reading test as instrument which consisted of 40 multiple choice questions about 8 components of reading comprehension. After that, the instrument was tried out to make sure the validity and realibility of the test. From the data, it was found that the ability of the second year students of SMAN 1 Benai in reading comprehension of analytical exposition text is categorized into average level with the mean score 59,67. The findings also show that vocabulary component is the lowest score by the students with the mean score 51,86. On the other hand, social function component is the highest score by students the with the mean score 64,81. From the findings, further research can focus on the way to improve the students’ vocabulary in reading comprehension.Keywords: Ability, Reading Comprehension, Analytical Exposition text

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research aimed to find out the significant effect of Anticipation Guide Strategy to the eleventh grade studens’ reading comprehension of SMAN 3 Pekanbaru. More than 50% students of SMAN 3 Pekanbaru often face some problems in comprehending the text caused by some factors such as: lack of background knowledge, lack of vocabulary, the technique in teaching reading comprehension, and students’ background knowledge which has not been activated. To overcome the problems, the writer used Anticipation Guide Strategy in teaching and learning process. The population was the eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 Pekanbaru, while the sample class was XI IPS 2. The writer used cluster sampling technique to decide the sample and the instrument of this research was test in the form of multiple choice. The test included five aspects of reading comprehension which are; main idea, inference, reference, factual information, and vocabulary, and three aspects of narrative text which are; generic structure, purpose, and language features. The students’ reading comprehension scores were analyzed using t-test formula. The writer used the level of significance at 0.05 (5%). After being calculated, the value of t-observed was 6.549, whereas the value of t-table on the df (degree of freedom) 33 was 2.021. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis that there is a significant effect of Anticipation Guide Strategy on students’ reading comprehension of SMAN 3 Pekanbaru was accepted and its null hypothesis was rejected. In conclusion, using Anticipation Guide Strategy has a significant effect on students’ reading comprehension of SMAN 3 Pekanbaru.Keywords: Anticipation Guide Strategy, Reading Comprehension2

Abstract

Abstract: This study was conducted to analyse the grammatical errors made by second semester students in writing paragraph at the English Study Program of Universitas Riau. The aim of this study was to find out eight types of common grammatical errors they are Passive Voice, Verb Tense and Form, Subject- Verb Agreement, Word Order, Preposition, Articles, Plurality, and Auxiliary that made by the participants of the study.Writing a paragraph test were administered to twenty seven participants. They were asked to write a paragraph in 90 minutes and based on the three topics provided by the writer. Three raters were involved in checking the grammatical errors on the participants’ paragraph writing. Then, the errors were classified and described. From the analysis, it was obtained that the participants of study made 80 errors. They were errors in terms of Verb Tense and Form (32.50%), Plurality (21.25%) and Subject-Verb Agreement (12.50%). The lowest percentage of errors was in terms of Word Order (5%) and Passive Voice (5%).Thus, it needs more concern on these aspects. Moreover, the other errors are need to be focused as well. It is recommended that other reseachers find the reasons of those comitted errors.Key Words: Error Analysis, Grammatical Errors, Writing Paragraph
