Abstract

The levels of Pb, Cu, Cd and Zn in sawi (Barsssica rapa), ground kuna (Ipomea reptans), and spinach (Amaranthus tricolor) in the area of Paya Rumput Titipapan Medan village have been done. The goal is to know the levels of these metals in vegetables grown in the agricultural area of Paya Rumput Titipapan Village. Samples taken randomly in wash drained and weighed. Wet weight then dried at a temperature of 50-100o C for 3 hours, After dry on weigh in gerus until smooth. The sample was destructed with concentrated nitric acid with temperature 80o C, the sample was analyzed by using atomic absorption spectrophotometric (AAS). The results showed the highest levels of lead found in spinach is 6 mg / kg. Levels of cadmium in kale and spinach is 3 mg / kg. While the Cu content on the analysis results are still within the maximum limit. The concentration of Pb, Cd, Zn in each sample exceeds the maximum allowed by the Decree of Dit Jend POM No 03725 / B / SKVII / 89 and SNI 7387: 2009.

Abstract

This reseach aims to determine the presence of Salmonella sp. In chicken meat sold in both markets. The study was conducted by taking samples of chicken meat in each market as much as 50 grams. In the Sukaramai market, samples were taken from three locations, namely location I, II, III and one location from Carrefour supermarket. The bacteria contamination test was performed by counting the number of bacteria each sample with Plat Count Agar (PCA) method, each sample was diluted and cultured on 10-1 dilution. Deuteronomy is done four times. Then proceed with biochemical test. The results showed that all four samples of Salmonella sp. From Sukaramai traditional market contaminated with pathogen bacteria with the average amount of Salmonella as much as 1.7 X 102 from the overall location I, II, and III and also found contaminant bacteria that can be a pathogen while from Carrefour supermarkets not found Salmonella.

Abstract

Abstract

Tangkahan Conservation Forest in Karo County, North Sumatera has high biodiversity of endemic herbs. Many species of the wild herbs are well known used as traditional medicine not only by local people but also by people out of the area. The methanol extract of the medicinal wild herbs in Tangkahan Conservation Forest, Karo County to relief skin diseases caused by bacteria and fungi never been studied medically. The antimicrobial activity leave extract of the medicinal herbs to pathogenic  microorganisms are studied. The leaves extract of kembu-kembu (Callicarpa candicans), rintih bulung (Piper muricatum), cep-cepan (Castanopsis costata), and sereh kayu (Eugenia grandis), has antimicrobial to bacteria (Bacillus sp., Escherichia coli, Serratia marcescens, Staphylococcus aureus) and yeast (Candida albicans). Toxicity assay of these plants by brine shrimp method using Artemia salina indicates that cep-cepan dan sereh kayu have lethal concentration higher than kembu-kembu and rintih bulung.

Abstract

The aim of this investigation was to determine the effect of various water activities (aw) on fungal population in nutmeg kernels during storage. The seed nutmegs were obtained from ripe fruits one week after they fell on the ground in North Minahasa Regency, North Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. The kernels (moisture content ± 10%) were stored 0, 15, and 30 days in various aw (0.75, 0.80, 0.83, 0.90, 0.97) using saturated salt solutions at 29 °C in sorption containers. Serial dilution method followed by a pour-plate method in Dichloran 18% Glycerol Agar (DG18) was used to isolate and quantify the fungal population. Results revealed that kernels stored at aw = 0.75 was not significantly (p < 0.05) different from at aw = 0.80-0.83. Fungal population of kernels determined  aw and significantly (p < 0.05) influenced by duration of storage. Range of aw 0.80-0.83 has a smaller total fungal population than aw ≥ 0.90. Thirteen different genera/species were isolated and identified including Aspergillus and Eurotium (6 species), Penicillium (3 species), Fusarium (2 species), 1 species each of Cladosporium or Syncephalastrum, and isolate A. The largest total fungal population (5.0×105 CFU g-1) was present at the beginning of storage (aw = 0.97) and it was dominated by Penicillium citrinum (2.6×105 CFU g-1) followed by Cladosporium cladosporioides (1.7×105 CFU g-1). After 30 days of storage (aw = 0.97) the population of P. citrinum was still dominant with a population of 2.4×104 CFU g-1. Eurotium chevalieri followed with a population of 1.2×104 CFU g-1.

Abstract

Growth inhibition of Aspergillus flavus and Fusarium moniliforme by leaf extract of salam (Eugenia polyantha) and turmeric (Curcuma domestica) was studied. Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method was used in this experiment. The plant extracts used were 0, 5, 10, 15, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70% and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a solvent. The result showed that the E. polyantha and C. domestica have a different activity in inhibiting the growth of A. flavus. The leaf extract of turmeric showed lower activity inhibiting A. flavus and F. moniliforme than that of E.polyantha. In 5% E. polyantha inhibits the growth both of the fungus. While C. domestica showed activity inhibiting A. flavus in 5 % and F. moniliforme in 40 %.   Keywords: A. flavus, F. moniliforme, extract salam, turmeric

Abstract

The growth inhibition of Aspergillus flavus and Fusarium moniliforme by extract of seruni (Wedelia biflora) and Kembang bulan (Tithonia diversifolia) has studied. Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion were used in this experiment. The leaf methanolic extracts prepared were 0, 5, 10, 15, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70% with  dimethyl sulfoxide as the solvent.
