Abstract

This paper explores the most recently issues in English language teaching known as lexically-based approach and discusses the current issues and promising contributions to L2 teaching development. Internationally, the perspective is afforded as the demands of current settings and necessities in the context of ELT, particularly the ones consider English as their second and foreign language usage. The diversion of ELT contexts in the world might trigger the imbalance use of teaching approaches, strategies, techniques and teaching model. Therefore, in bridging the gap of the imbalance, this paper suggests some worthy-applied approaches which might be taken as considerations. EFL practitioners, teachers, students, curriculum makers and school practitioners in the level of junior, senior high school and university can incorporate  the proposed lexically-based approaches in  their  teaching  and  conduct research  on  the  effectiveness  of  the  approaches and techniques  they  utilize. The effect of chunking, the learning of formulaic phrases, collocation instruction and conscious awareness of learning lexicon can add a different dimension to teaching that may result in better L2 proficiency.

Abstract

The researcher interested in language variations that occur in the traditional markets of Senggigi West Nusa Tenggara and Traditional House of Sade. Thus, this study analyzes the language variations in the process of buying and selling in the realm of Senggigi traditional markets and Traditional House of Sade. The author conducted research by taking the title "A Critical Analysis of Language Variation in the Senggigi Art Market and Traditional House of Sade (Sociolinguistic Studies)". Method used in this study is qualitative with data collecting technique with observation In this research, there was one type of data. The qualitative data consist of interview transcripts and observation sheets report in the form of field notes. These data were analyzed namely data display until final reporting. The findings of this research shows that there are several kinds of the language variation used by people in trading transaction at Senggigi art market, I.e., a) variation in term of speaker base on sociolect (dialek social) is concerning all personal problems of speaker such as age, sex, and social economy condition and b) Language variation in term of formality base on formal variety, Variety of Consultative Variety, casual variety, and Familiar Variety or Intimate Variety. There are factors influence of language variation base on situational factor. Situational factors include who speaks, to whom to speak, what language to use, where, when and what. and Language variation function mention related to sociolinguistic language functions namely instrumental functions, representational functions, interactional functions, and personal functions. There are The implications of the variety of languages used in communication in the traditional art markets of Senggigi and Sade are as follows: 1) Improve Social Interaction Relationships; 2) Increase Intelligence in Communicating; 3) Increase Income; and 4) Increasing Regional Cultural Identity.

Abstract

The main objective of teaching English is to allow the learner to communicate orally and successfully. People all over the place study a foreign language to enable them to communicate effectively. This study investigates a phenomenon about communication strategy used by EFL students in English Classroom Setting. The focus of this study is to investigate the types of communication strategies and the most frequent types of communication strategies employed by EFL Students. It took place in Institut Pendidikan Nusantara Global that located in Central Lombok. The participant of this study was a total of 20 students from the second semester. A qualitative research design was used to collect the data need in this study embarrassing interviews and observation as main instruments; the observation used were field notes and videotape aimed to get the documentation of the study. The finding of the study shows that most of the students employed the types of communication strategy i.e.: Asking for clarification, requesting an explanation, asking for repetition, circumlocution, message abandonment, meaning negotiation, and interaction monitoring. Furthermore, the communication strategies frequently used by students i.e.: asking for clarification, message abandonment, and meaning negotiation. In conclusion, every student has their own communication strategy but the researcher categorized those strategies into several types.

Abstract

This research investigated the teaching of English by using Two Stay Two Stray to improve the students’ speaking skill in the 10th grade students of SMK Negeri 2 Praya Tengah, West Nusa Tenggara Province. The participants of this research were 28 students. The research utilized a classroom action research. The research covered two cycles and each cycle consisted of four steps, they were; planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The research consisted of two cycles and each cycle applied three parts, such as; pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The data collected were qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were gained through observation and documentation. Meanwhile, the quantitative data was collected from the test. The researcher used SPSS 16.00 in analyzing the quantitative data. The researcher found that there was a significant improvement on students’ speaking skills after giving treatment using Two Stay Two Stray in cycle I and cycle II. The improvement of using Two Stay Two Stray in improving the students’ speaking skill was significant. It can be seen from the cycle I up to the cycle II. The result of the cycle I showed that the mean of post-test is higher than the the pre-test. The mean of post-test was 66.14 and pre-test are 60.50. In the cycle II, the mean of post-test is higher than the mean of the pre-test. The mean score of post-test was 76.28 and pre-test are 66.14. The researcher concluded that using Two Stay Two Stray improved the 10th grade students’ speaking skill at SMK Negeri 2 Praya Tengah, West Nusa Tenggara Province.

Abstract

Kegiatan menulis ilmiah merupakan kegiatan yang membutuhkan pemahan dan dan keterampilan menulis secara akademis yangtidak dapat dipisahkan dari profesi guru dan dosen. Khususnya para Guru sebagai pendidik di sekolah tentu keharusan bagi mereka agar dpat mengembangkan profesi melalui tulisantulisan atau karya tulis ilmiah berdasarkan data dan temuan mereka di lapangan dalam aktivitas pendidikan.Namun demikian, sebagian besar mereka belum mampu atau tidak ada akses bagi guru-guru untuk menuangkanya dalam karya tulisan ilmiah berupa artikel jurnal, sehingga dapat menjadi bagian dari pengembangan profesi mereka sebagai pendidik.Berdasarkan pantauan dan hasildiskusi dengan beberapa guru SMP-SMA dan MGMP Bahasa Inggris batukliang Utara kabupaten Lombok Tengah, diketahui bahwa guru mengalami kendala dalam menulis artikel ilmiah dan kurang adanya informasi mengenai jurnal yang akan dituju. Oleh sebab itu, perlu adanya Workshop dan pendampingan lanjutan penulisan artikel ilmiah bagi guru agar bahan yang sudah ada tersebut dapat ditindaklanjuti untuk ditulis dalam format artikel ilmiah. Selain itu, juga perlu adanya informasi bagi guru tentang jurnal-jurnal yang dapat diakses untuk dapat diajukan artikel, baik jurnal nasional maupun jurnal internasional.Target dari program workshop dan pendampingan ini adalah meningkatnya pemahaman dan keterampilan menulis karya ilmiah bagi guru SMP-SMAKabupaten Lombok Tengah tentang jenis-jenis karya ilmiah, kaidah menulis karya ilmiah, dan menulis artikel secara profesional. Luaran dari program pendampingan ini adalah artikel ilmiah yang ditulis oleh guru SMP-SMA Kabupaten Lombok Tengah untuk diajukan ke jurnal nasional atau prosiding seminar nasional. Kegiatan ini diikuti oleh 45 orang guru yang berasal dari empat SMP dan tiga SMA negeri swasta yang berada di wilayah Kecamatan Kabupaten Lombok Tengah. Metode kegiatan yang dilaksanakan guna menyelesaikan permasalahan mitra adalah dengan pendekatan secara klasikal dan individual. Pendekatan klasikal digunakan pada kegiatan penyampaian materi secara teoritik langkah-langkah menulis artikel ilmiah. Pendekatan individual digunakan pada saat peserta pendampingan menulis artikel ilmiah yakni dengan metode workshop. Berdasarkan pelaksanaan kegiatan pendampingan ini, disimpulkan: (1) kemauan peserta dalam menulis artikel atau karya tulis ilmiah adalah cukup tinggi; (2) pemahaman peserta terhadap menulis artikel adalah kurang; dan (3) pemahaman peserta terhadap jenis tulisan adalah kurang. Hasil FGD menujukkan permasalahan yang dialami guru dalam menulis karya ilmiah. Permasalahan yang dialami oleh guru dalam menulis karya ilmiah diklasifikasikan menjadi dua, yaitu masalah eksternal dan masalah internal.Masalah eksternal guru dalam menulis karya ilmiah adalah: (1) kurangnya informasi tentang hal-hal berkaitan dengan menulis; (2) sulitnya menemukan tempat bertanya ketika menulis; (3) keterbatasan referensi dalam menulis; dan (4) proses birokrasi (dibatasi satu jenis tulisan, seperti hasil PTK). Masalah internal guru dalam menulis karya ilmiah adalah: (1) lemahnya budaya menulis di kalangan para guru; (2) rendahnya motivasi guru untuk membuat karya tulis artikel ilmiah; (3) sebagian guru memandang proses birokrasi yang selalu mempersulit membuat mereka menyerah sebelum berusaha; dan (4) keterbatasan waktu untuk menulis

Abstract

Upaya peningkatan kualitas pembelajaran Bahasa, diperlukan berbagai terobosan, baik dalam pengembangan kurikulum, maupun inovasi metode pembelajaran, selain pemenuhan sarana dan prasarana pendidikan. Untuk meningkatkan prestasi belajar siswa maka guru dituntut untuk membuat pembelajaran menjadi lebih aktif dan inovatif yang mendorong siswa dapat mencapai hasil belajar secara optimal baik di dalam belajar mandiri maupun didalam pembelajaran di kelas. Agar pembelajaran lebih optimal dan sesui dengan karakteristik siswa, maka diperlukan sebuah metodologi pembelajaran bahasa yang efektif dan selektif sesuai karakteristikdan situasi pesertadidik Dewasa ini, pengajaran bahasa khususnya bahasa Inggris dan Arab dengan menggunakan metode dalam pembelajaran masih belum optimal, kebanyakan guru menggunakan metode dan pendekatan masing-masing yang tidak terukur. Hal tersebut dikarenakan keterbatasan mereka dalam memahami metode dan pendekatan dalam pembelajaran bahasa. Untuk mencari alternatif solusi pemecahan masalah di atas, maka diadakan pelatihan metodologi steps dan elicits dalam pembelajaran bahasa. Dengan tujuan memberi pemahaman kepada guru-guru penggunaan metode efektif dalam pembelajaran bahasa, serta melatih guru-guru agar dapat mendesain bahan ajar yang sesui dengan karakteristik metode stepsdan elicite agar dapatmemaksimalkan kompetensi anak didik. Khalayak sasaran dari pengabdian ini adalah guru-guru SD dan TK, khususnya guru bahasa Yayasan Arrahman. Kegiatan pengabdian telah dilaksanakan pada tanggal 7 Juli dan 3 Agustus 2019 yang bertempat di Ggedung sekolah Yayasn Arrahman Gerung Lombok Barat. Dari hasil evaluasi diperoleh hasil dan manfaat dari kegiatan pengabdian ini diantaranya adalah meningkatkan pemahaman guru-guru mengenai penggunaan metode pembelajaran bahasa steps and elicite serta keterampilan guru-guru dalam mendesai bahasan ajar sesuai dengan karakteristik metode. Kegiatan pengabdian ini berjalan dengan lancar, karena berbagai pendukung terutama partiipasi peserta yang cukup antusias dan berpartisipasi aktif dalam kegiatan ini. Pelatihan ini hendaknya dilakukan pada sasaran yang lebih luas dan materi yang lebih komprehensif. Dengan demikian diharapkan kelak dapat membantu guru-guru bahasa dalam menggunakan metode dan pendekatan belajar bahasa sehingga mutu pembelajaran Bahasa,serta kompetensi siswa dapat lebih meningkat

Abstract

Rastiani. 2019. The Impact of Teacher Questioning on Creating Interaction in EFL: A Discourse Analysis (A Descriptive Qualitative Research at SMP Mataram). This study examines the effect of questions on fostering interactions in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. It also seeks to determine the characteristics of questions that encourage increased classroom interaction. Data were collected through EFL classroom video recordings that were analyzed using the Discourse Analysis technique. Participants in this study were students of SMPN Mataram. First, participating classes are videotaped and the data collected is transcribed. The questions asked in each class are then divided into two groups: questions that are considered to increase class interaction and questions that fail to create class interaction. Finally, the defining features of each group of questions are determined. The results show that the impact of teacher questions in creating classroom interaction is effective. In other words, several types of questions significantly increase class interaction.
