Abstract

The objectives of this research are to develop a model of water table fluctuation on tidal lowland area of A/B type. The results of the research are expected to support of the agricultural development on tidal lowland area, especially on water management, because the water management play an important role in the agricultural on tidal lowland area. The water table on tidal lowland area fluctuates according to space and time. The water table controls at a certain depth can support the plant growth and the pyrite oxidation restraint. The model of water table fluctuation which is developed in this research based on the ellipse concept. The research was conducted on the reclamation area of tidal lowland at the fourth tertiary block in P8-12S Delta Telang I, Banyuasin district, South Sumatra province. The simulations of model show good result of estimating the depth of water table on tidal lowland area of A/B type. The proportion of variation the depth of water table which can be explained by model that is 89,6% up to 95,5% with standard error of the estimate is 0,021-0,035 meters. The parameter of the water level in the tertiary canals has high sensitivity to the model.

The objective of this research is to develop a model of water table fluctuation on tidal lowland area of B/C type.  Modeling of water table is expected to support the agriculture development on tidal lowland area, especially on water management due to the important role of water management in the agriculture on tidal lowland area. The water table controls on the particular depth can support the farming system and avoid pyrite oxidation. The model of water table fluctuation which is developed in this research based on the ellipse concept. The developed model has been tested on the tidal lowland areas in P6-3N Delta Telang I, Banyuasin District, South Sumatra Province. The simulated model showed the promoting result in estimating the depth of water table on tidal lowland area of B/C type. The developed model could explain the proportion of water table depth variation between 89.5% up to 94.7% with standard error estimation varied from 0.029 to 0.042 meters. The model has high sensitivity to the parameter of the water level in the tertiary canals.   Key words: modeling, water table, water management, tidal lowland area of B/C type

Abstract

Water quality and quantity is always an important issue in lowland ecosystem of Banyuasin. Low domestic water supply sanitation is considered as having an important contribution on the high frequency of waterborne diseases in the area. The study aims at recording water borne diseases and the water quality in the lowland area of Banyuasin District. This field research was conducted using a cross-sectional method. Total samples were 210 households in Telang which were observed during July through August 2011. Six water samples were measured for their physical and chemical properties, in addition to 1 water sample for bacteriological test. All respondents used river water for sanitary purposes and 41.4% of them also have dug wells. Those who used river water for sanitation, 68.5 % also consumed purified water for drinking purpose. All water samples are acidic (pH 5,68-6,19) and contain high Iron  (1-26,269 Mg/L). Water has yellowish color.  The major disease are diarrhea and skin diseases. In the lowland area with the estuarine ecosystem water quality and scarcity are serious problems. This in turn causes the high prevalent of waterborne diseases such as diarea. Low level of education and socio-economic status make it difficult for the local people to overcome these problems. Outside intervention especially government so as to improve the condition is needed
