Abstract

The research of transesterification reaction catalyzed by CaO/natural zeolite has been carried out. This work was aimed to obtain the high yield of biodiesel. The supporting process of CaO on natural zeolite (CaO/ZAA) was done by using wet impregnation method and characterization of CaO/ZAA was performed using XRD, FTIR and the determination of specific surface area of natural zeolite as CaO supporter was performed by BET method. This research aims to study the influence of transesterification reaction which was executed by varying molar ratio of oil to methanol and reaction temperature. Analysis of functional groups and minerals using FTIR and XRD, respectively, showed no significant changes before and after the impregnation of CaO on natural zeolites. CaO supported on natural zeolite was undetected by FTIR. Instead, it was detected by the vibration of carbonate groups as the result of the CO2 absorption by CaO and the result of surface area analysis using BET method showed that the greater the size of natural zeolite, the smaller the specific surface area of catalyst. The result analysis using BET method showed that the spesific surface area of 200 mesh sized natural zeolite as CaO supporter was 9.993 m2/g. The simple gravimetric test revealed that  the amount of CaO supported on 200 mesh sized natural zeolite was 0.2155 g/g. It was concluded that CaO/ZAA 200 mesh was the most suitable catalyst which was then used in the production of biodiesel. The transesterification result showed that the highest biodiesel yield of 98.34% was gained at molar ratio of oil to methanol of 1:15 and at the temperature of 60 oC. The GC-MS analysis indicated that the main components of the biodiesel were methyl palmitate and methyl oleate.

Abstract

Citrus amblycarpa contain flavonoid-rich compounds and play important role in suppressing the conversion of angiotensin-converting enzyme 1 (ACE 1) to angiotensin-enzyme 2 (ACE 2). This study aimed to determine the bioactive compounds in the lime peel extract and their ability as in vitro ACE inhibitor activity. The lime peel extract was obtained by boiling the dried peel and dried leaves for 7 min at 70oC. The bioactive compound of the peel and the leaves were compared. The total phenolic, quercetin, rutin, and GABA were further quantified using spectrophotometer UV vis. The aqueous extract of C. ambylcarpa peel showed a high concentration of phenolic, quercetin, rutin, and GABA than that of the leaves extract. Furthermore, the peel extract at low concentration (0.0001 g/mL) has high efficiency in inhibiting ACE activity up to 133%. It can be concluded that the peel of C. amblycarpa is a good candidate for the management of hypertension.

Abstract

ABSTRACTPreparation of zeolite-clay concrete for new ethanol/water pervaporation without heating has been carried out. Concrete was made by mixing natural zeolite, portland cement, natural clay and distilled water in porcelain disk. The mixture was manually stirred until homogenous suspension obtained. The suspension formed was then placed in the mold and allowed to dry in open air for 48 hours. The mass of natural zeolite was varied from 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, and 20 g meanwhile the mass of natural clay was varied from 0, 1.25, 2.5, 3.75, and 5 g. The mass of portland cement was fixed in the value of 10 g. The concrete was characterized by infrared spectrophotometer (IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Material testing machine was used to determine the compressive strength of the concrete agreeable with decided ASTM C349-08 standard.Based on preparation of zeolite-clay concrete, it was found that the increase of the natural zeolite mass from 15 to 20 g caused fracture to the concrete, but water adsorption percentage increased from 27.7% to 35.2%. Meanwhile, the higher the mass of natural clay, the greater the compressive strength of concrete from 130.3 MPa to 179.9 MPa and water adsorption percentage from 28.9% to 32.3%. The adsorption-desorption data showed that the water was faster to adsorb into the concrete than ethanol, whereas the desorption rate of concrete with respect to ethanol was greater than that to water. The difference on desorption rate was then used to separate ethanol/water mixture through pervaporation without heating. Pervaporation test using the concretes resulted in the increase of ethanol feed concentration from 60%, 70%, 80%, and 90% to 82.9%, 82.5%, 87.8%, and 93.7% respectively. Keywords: concrete, compressive strength, adsorption-desorption, ethanol/water mixture, pervaporation.

Abstract

Avocado peel (Persea americana Mill) and red ginger (Zingiber officinale var. Rubrum) proved to have antidiabetic properties. However, there has been no research on the analysis of antidiabetic activity of the combination of avocado peel and red ginger in functional beverages. This study aims to make functional beverages from the combination of avocado peel and red ginger. Total phenolic content, antioxidant capacity, inhibition of the α-amylase activity, and public preferences towards functional beverages (organoleptic) were then evaluated. Functional beverages were made by brewing the powdered avocado peel and red ginger with 200 ml of hot water (96oC) for 5 minutes. The results showed that the increase of avocado peels amount in the combination coukd increase total phenolic content. The high antioxidant capacity was also found in samples with high content of avoccado peels. The results of inhibition of α-amylase enzyme activity did not show any significant differences. Organoleptic test results showed that there were no significant differences in each sample. The combination of avocado peel and red ginger has the potential to be an antidiabetic functional beverage.

Abstract

Coccinia grandis (L.) Voigt is an herbal plant that has been widely used for the treatment of various types of diseases. The phenolic and flavonoid content of plant extracts largely determine their pharmacological activity. The aim of this study was to determine the total phenolic and flavonoid contents of the ethanol extract of C. grandis leaves. Leaf samples in this study were obtained in the area of Dalung, North Kuta, Badung, Bali. The powdered C. grandis leaf was extracted by maceration method using 70% ethanol followed by evaporation using an oven at 45oC to obtain a thick extract. The non-specific parameters of the extract were then determined, such as moisture content, ash content, and acid insoluble ash. Total phenolic content was determined using the follin-ciocalteu method and total flavonoid content was determined using the aluminum chloride method. Based on the research results, the yield of C. grandis leaf extract was 19.36%. C. grandis leaf extract has a description of a thick and sticky extract, blackish brown color, distinctive aroma, and a bitter sour taste. The water content of the ethanolic extract of C. grandis leaves was 9.93±0.03% (g/g). The total ash value of the simplicia and ethanolic extract of C. grandis leaves were 20.76±0.15% (g/g) and 27.38±0.19% (g/g), respectively. The acid insoluble ash content of the extract was 4.05±0.30% (g/g). The total phenolic and total flavonoid contents of the extract were 111.92±0.49 µg GAE/mg dry extract and 73.60±3.53 µg QE/mg dry extract, respectively.
