Abstract

Tourists' visits to rural areas are increasingly experiencing growth. However, the community has not taken advantage of tourism as an opportunity to increase income. The research aims to identify the factors driving and inhibiting homestay management by the community, analyze the community's capacities and opportunities for homestay management, and propose a community capacity-building model for homestay management. This research employs a qualitative approach through a case study in Maen Village, Likupang, North Minahasa Regency. The research was carried out in 2020 through two periods of visits with interviews with residents and observation. The research reveals that the community had not yet optimized their house as a homestay. Residents' houses only serve as lodging for mining workers. However, residents do not mind providing their house as an accommodation based on homestay management principles. The strategic location of Maen Village, the hospitality of the residents, and the use of people's houses as lodging are the driving forces for homestay management. A weak understanding of homestay is a challenge for most residents. Community capacity still needs to be improved with various training programs. This study proposes two homestay management models and development, including, entrepreneurial-based community capacity model and a homestay management model based on digital marketing principles. This research validates the concept of community capacity through homestay management. In addition, the paper provides an insight on how to utilize the opportunities possessed by the local community to obtain alternative income through homestay management.

Abstract

The Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia has chosen Morotai Island Regency as one of ten prioritized tourism destinations. This policy requires tourism supporting elements including an adequate transportation system. This research aims to identify the supporting capacity of the local transportation modes from which the strategies of tourism development derived from. A qualitative methodology is applied by using naturalistic and interpretative approaches to investigate the capacity of transportation modes in Morotai Island. Interviews with the local tourism agency officials and the local transportation service providers are completed for collecting relevant data and information. The research reveals that the existing transportation modes can support tourism development in Morotai. However, there are some attempts required to support tourism based transportation system: strengthening the synergetic relations between the local government and the air transportation service providers for increasing flight schedule for tourists; providing creative local based transportation modes to support better tourism development; and providing accurate information about sea transportation service to support Morotai as the prioritized tourism destination.

Abstract

Indigenous tourism is a relatively new concept for tourism stakeholders and has not become a priority to encourage local tourism potential. The lack of information and previous study about the concept of indigenous tourism and an understanding of the concept make tourism destination focused only in promoting local culture. Therefore, this research aims to identify: 1) the potential of Bitombang and Pandai Besi village in supporting indigenous tourism in Selayar Regency; 2) strategic steps required in supporting Selayar regency through indigenous tourism concept; and 3) actions to take for stakeholders to achieve development goals and achieving balance between indigenous tourism and sustainable tourism. Approach used in this study is feature of qualitative study which able to lead researcher in understanding indigenous tourism in Selayar Regency. To gather the data, researcher conducted interview to the society, government staff, and local communities in Selayar who possess adequate comprehension about the tourism circumstances, and Selayar people sociocultural condition. There are 8 choosen informants who are originally Selayar residents. The research shows that Bitombang and Pandai Besi Old Village are important assets in supporting the development of indigenous tourism, aside from another tourism potential. Therefore, study about history and cultural value of indigenous people, procurement of local tour guide, initiation from environmental organization, and travel route map for tourist are essential. Government’s role is also strongly expected to facilitate various communities to take part in the development of indigenous tourism.

Abstract

Tanjung Karang in Donggala Regency has the potential to be developed using the concept of marine ecotourism. However, the management system tends to be contradictory with the principles of marine ecotourism. The aim of this research is to understand the supporting factors and challenges in implementing marine ecotourism in Tanjung Karang, as well as studying the carrying capacity and human resources. A qualitative research method was used through interviews and participant observation. The research shows that natural potential and traditional socio-cultural activities conducted by the community are both essential in supporting Tanjung Karang as a channel of marine ecotourism. The three management systems supported by the community, government and private sector are capable of making a difference in relation to marine ecotourism implementation. In building tourism facilities, people tend to ignore the environmental preservation aspect. In addition, the private sector, as one of the tourism developers, also needs to ensure the management of Tanjung Karang that they will provide opportunities for the local community to enjoy nature and the culture offered. This tourism should not be exclusively for international tourists. Although Tanjung Karang has been used as a tourist attraction before, marine ecotourism has not been prioritised as the development framework by the stakeholders. Efforts have been undertaken to support the implementation of marine ecotourism and the stakeholder needs to understand the supporting factors and challenges involved, as well as the carrying capacity, in order to develop Tanjung Karang's marine ecotourism.

Abstract

Wakatobi regency has been chosen as a ten-top priority tourism destination in Indonesia. It provides the opportunity for the local community to obtain benefits through tourism. The aims of this research are 1) to study the expectation of the community related to the management of homestay as accommodation business; 2) to analyse challenges and provide recommendations concerning how to implement community-based tourism on the perspective of community as the organiser of the homestay. Qualitative research conducted in March 2018 by visiting Wakatobi for participant observation and interviews three community members or homestay managers, two tour guides and two people from the tourism industry (accommodation). The research indicates that tourism has encouraged the local community to manage homestay, although there are members of the community require motivation and support to understand the significances of managing homestay and tourism. The management of homestay by the local community links to the implementation of community-based tourism and to optimise the management of homestay; it is necessary to provide sustainable training for the local community as well as to empower people through local tourism organisation. Key attractors such as activities and alternative attractions for the visitors are essential for the management of homestay. Limited numbers of tourists who choose homestay to become the challenge for homestay management, thus, the local community expects that the increasing number of tourists as well as a willingness by tourists to choose homestay as their accommodation.

Abstract

Indonesia is an archipelagic state with considerable potential as tourism destinations, yet that potential has not been fully maximized. This paper aims to examine the opportunity and potential of Gusung Island as tourism resources and propose possible strategies to manage the tourism resources of Gusung Island, Selayar Islands Regency. The research was conducted in July and August 2019 on Gusung Island, Selayar Islands Regency, South Sulawesi Province by applying qualitative research methods. Methods of data collection are through in-depth interviews with the fishing community and their families, direct observation or observation in Gusung Island, and focused discussions held in Benteng City, Selayar Islands Regency. The research reveals that marine tourism and local community activities have a considerable potential to support Gusung Island as a tourism destination. Strategies for community empowerment include educating and facilitating community for hospitality skills, creating tourism packages by involving the tourism industry and the local community, strengthening the working group’s role in managing the tourism resources of Gusung Island. Sustainable tourism may be booming if the local community organizations play a pivotal role in facilitating the local community to preserve the environment.

Abstract

Empirical data on how the local governments implement tourism innovation is very limited. Thus, it is necessary to explore how the regional board of tourism develops tourism potential through innovative approach.The aims of this research are to explore the festival of Habibie-Ainun as well as to recommend ways in optimizing the festival for community welfare.This research is a qualitative study by interviewing (in-depth interview) four staff at the regional board of tourism as well as doing participant observation at Parepare city.The research reveals that Habibie-Ainun is choosen as an icon of tourism because of the enchantment of Habibie, the former president of Indonesia who was born in Parepare city.Habibie-Ainun festival, becak of tourism and the statue of Habibie-Ainun are considered as innovative strategies in attracting tourists.This research suggests that strategy of Habibie-Ainun should be supported with various and continuous activities that may involve tourists particularly in the area of the statue.The local government should also inform the community on how the strategy can help community improve their income through tourism. Innovative strategies may come from the community, and thus, it is important to strengthen synergy between the local government and the community.

Abstract

The benefits of Maratua Island as tourism attraction should belong to the local community. For this reason, sustainable tourism must be implemented to help community obtain economic benefits and to preserve the natural and cultural resources. This research aims at analysing the implementation of sustainable tourism and proposing recommendations of strategies for sustainable tourism at Maratua Island. This research employs qualitative approach through interviews to the government staff (in tourism board), local community and local leader in Maratua island as well as participant observation in 2017. The research reveals that although the members of community have participated in tourism activity, unsustainable practices by the local community constraint the goal of sustainable tourism. The existence of outsiders (investors) have encouraged the participation of community in tourism. However, the local community should be encouraged to have good job positions rather than as low level worker. This research recommend efforts to achieve sustainable tourism including the importance of socialisation about tourism to community and education and training in creative economy. The government has the role in facilitating such efforts and regulating the investors. Trash boat is considered important in overcoming the issues of environment. In addition, ambassador (duta) of environment and tourism is essential in providing information about tourism and issues on sustainability and sustainable tourism.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan 1) untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor penunjang\pendorong kesuksesan pengelolaan Desa Wisata Nglanggeran; 2) untuk menguraikan langkah atau upaya praktis yang dilakukan oleh pengelola Desa Wisata Desa Wisata Nglanggeran dalam mewujudkan pariwisata berbasis masyarakat (community-based tourism). Penelitian dilakukan pada bulan Juni tahun 2018 dengan tujuan mendapatkan gambaran mengenai aktivitas kepariwisataan yang terjadi di lokasi penelitian. Penulis memanfaatkan metode pengumpulan data melalui wawancara mendalam kepada pengurus atau pengelola Desa Wisata Nglanggeran serta observasi partisipatif sebagai wisatawan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kesuksesan pengelolaan Desa Wisata Nglanggeran adalah karena kemampuan generasi muda yang juga merupakan masyarakat asli yang mendiami desa tersebut untuk bekerja dan berinovasi membuat dan menciptakan paket wisata untuk wisatawan. Kesadaran kolektif masyarakatnya juga menjadi kunci kesuksesan tersebut. Peran Pokdarwis Nglanggeran dalam pemberian edukasi dan atau sosialisasi kepada masyarakat mampu mewujudkan pariwisata berbasis masyarakat.

Abstract

Kabupaten Sinjai belum memiliki branding khusus pariwisata sehingga dibutuhkan rancangan destination branding yang dapat menjadi alat promosi destinasi. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah 1) untuk mengetahui potensi pariwisata Kabupaten Sinjai; 2) untuk mengusulkan konsep perancangan destination branding Kabupaten Sinjai. Penelitian ini menerapkan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif dengan pengumpulan data melalui wawancara, observasi dan penyebaran angket (kuesioner) yang dilakukan pada bulan September 2018. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Kabupaten Sinjai memiliki potensi wisata alam dan budaya dan dibutuhkan cara untuk memperkenalkan potensi tersebut, salah satunya melalui rancangan branding destinasi. Setelah melakukan beberapa tahapan dalam destination branding, hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ikon yang sesuai untuk dijadikan brand pariwisata untuk Kabupaten Sinjai adalah kuda dengan hasil persentase sebesar 72,7% dan keindahan alam yang dimiliki yang mencakup 3 dimensi. Penelitian ini merekomendasikan pentingnya menerapkan rancangan branding yang telah dilakukan hingga tahap interpretasi potensi serta value yang dimiliki Kabupaten Sinjai menjadi suatu brand. Selanjutnya, diharapkan agar melanjutkan ke tahap berikutnya yaitu menggunakan brand yang ada sebagai bahan promosi dan menarik wisatawan melalui brand tersebut. Kajian lanjutan sangat dibutuhkan khususnya yang berkaitan dengan bagaimana implementasi brand destinasi Sinjai yang diusulkan..
