Abstract

Background: In vitro fertilization (IVF) is one of the assisted reproductive technology that has been used in treating infertility. Unfortunately, not every IVF procedure achieves 100% success in fertilizing the oocyte. It has been studied that the percentage of normal motile sperm and percentage of normal sperm morphology play a key role in this process. This study was conducted to evaluate correlation between sperm motility and morphology in the success rate of IVF. Methods: This study was an observational analytic involving medical records of infertile couples who were treated by IVF procedure in Dr.Hasan Sadikin General Hospital Bandung in 2009–2014. The variables that were used in this study were percentage of sperm motility, percentage of sperm morphology and fertilization rate.The collected data was analyzed using nonparametric Mann Whitney test and Spearman correlation test.Result: This study showed that there was a significant difference between the fertilization rate group and sperm motility (p=0,048) but there was no significant correlation between motility and the entire fertilization rate (p=0,319). This study also indicated that there was no significant difference between fertilization rate group and sperm morphology (p=0,232) and there was no significant correlation between sperm morphology and fertilization rate (p=0,720).Conclusions: Motility might has a role in determining the success rate of in vitro fertilization; meanwhile morphology does not have any role in determining the success rate of in vitro fertilization. Abstract

Background: Idiopathic male infertility becomes an issue because of the limited management options and increasing number of infertile couples. Sappan wood (Caesalpinia sappan. L) is an herbal plant predicted to have fertility and spermatogenesis enhancing effects through antioxidant properties. This study aimed to observe the effects of sappan wood ethanol extract in improving sperm quality of male wistar rat based on sperm motility, viability, and concentration. Methods: This was an experimental laboratory study by using sappan wood ethanol extracts as material and male wistar rat as the experimental animal. Twenty-four adult male wistar rats were divided into 4 groups including rats which were treated with aquades, 30, 60, and 120 mg/kg/day/orally of ethanol extract of sappan wood, respectively, during 35 days. After this period, the animals were sacrificed. Then the epididymis were taken for samples to calculate sperm motility percentage, sperm viability percentage and sperm concentration. Comparison between control group and the treated group was analyzed by one-way Annova.Results: There were significant differences between the control group and the group with 120 mg/kg of sappan wood ethanol extracts in the percentage of motility (36.39% and 51.75%; p-value 0.001), viability percentage (55.36% and 66.63%, p-value 0.031), and sperm concentration (54.47 million/ml and 47.79 million/ml; p-value 0.001).Conclusions: The ethanol extract of sappan wood with a dose of 120 mg/kg for 35 days is able to improve sperm motility percentage, sperm viability percentage, and sperm concentration of male wistar rat. Abstract

Background: Eye tumors are commonly found and fatal among pediatric patients. The immediacy of management depends on the diagnosis, and is increased when the patient’s characteristics are known. This study aims to describe the characteristics of pediatric patients diagnosed with eye tumors.Methods: This is a descriptive retrospective study using secondary data involving 102 medical records of pediatric patients diagnosed with eye tumors in the National Eye Center Cicendo Eye Hospital Bandung in the period from January 2013 to December 2014.Results: The characteristics of 102 subjects: 54 (52.9%) were female, 59 (57.8%) were 1 to 4 years old, and 79 (77.5%) were from West Java. The characteristics of the tumors: 42 (41.2%) presented with a chief complaint of leukocoria, 73 (71.6%) were malignant, 68 (66.7%) were retinal, and the most common management was surgery (64.7%). The most common malignant tumor was retinoblastoma (93.2%) while the most common benign tumor was dermoid cyst (31%).Conclusion: Patients were frequently 1–4 years old and the most common diagnosis were retinoblastoma and dermoid cyst. DOI: 10.15850/amj.v4n1.970

Abstract

Sekretori IgA (SIgA) adalah salah satu kelas andibodi yang terdapat dalam saliva, yang dihasilkan dalam bentuk dimerikIgA oleh sel plasma lokal (PCs) pada stroma glandula saliva dan kemudian ditransportasi melalui epitel sekretori olehpolimer Ig reseptor (pIgR), yang disebut juga dengan membran komponen sekretori (SC). Pada permukaan mukosaSIgA bersama dengan mukus akan mengekslusi antigen-antigen. Tujuan penulisan artikel ini adalah untuk menjelaskanperan SIgA dalam meningkatkan pertahanan mukosa mulut terhadap bakteri patogen Streptokokus mutans. Bakteri inimerupakan penyebab utama terjadinya karies gigi, karena kemampuannya untuk melekat pada permukaan gigi, yangmemungkinkan terbentuknya kolonisasi pada permukaan gigi melalui pembentukan biofilm. Perlekatan Streptokokusmutans ini akan dihambat oleh SIgA dengan mengintervensi protein perlekatan bakteri yang disebut Ag I/II. Hal inimemungkinkan SIgA untuk mencegah perlekatan bakteri pada permukaan, sehingga dapat mencegah inisiasi terjadinyakaries gigi. Sebagai kesimpulan, sekresi SIgA saliva terhadap Ag I/II Streptokokus mutanstelah terbukti dapat mencegahkolonisasi bakteritersebut dirongga mulut manusia

Abstract

Wound interferes with the equilibrium of skin functions. It disrupts a barrier function of the skin as external barrier of the internal organ from physical, chemical and biological environment. The wound can be easily treated but neglected wound can lead to several complications. Accelerate wound healing will prevent complications and reduce aesthetic problem in anti-aging treatment. Previous studies showed that physical modulation as electrical stimulation could enhance wound healing processes. This study purposed to compare three different modes of electrical stimulation on wound healing such as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), high voltage pulse current (HVPC) and low-intensity direct current (LIDC). This in vivo study used incisional skin biopsy of albino rat (Rattus norvegicus). Qualitative and quantitative parameters were analyzed to compare three different electrical stimulations on the wound healing response on the epidermis, dermis, inflammation, and angiogenesis phase. The highest histological score on the epidermis and dermis was found on LIDC whereas the highest histological score on the inflammation and angiogenesis phase was found on HVPC. This result of this study may provide useful information for selecting additional treatment for wound healing.

Abstract

Thrombocytopenia is often associated with clinically worse outcomes in dengue viral infection (DVI) patients. Histamine-2 receptor antagonist (H2RA) and proton pump inhibitor (PPI) have been reported to induce thrombocytopenia. These drugs are administered to DVI patients due to misinterpretation of abdominal pain. The study aimed to evaluate the correlation between H2RA and PPI administration with thrombocytopenia event on hospitalized DVI patients. An analytical retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using medical records of the patient admitted by final diagnosed DVI in seven major hospital in Bandung from January 1st to December 31st, 2015. Patients were separated into two groups i.e. with and without H2RA and PPI. Pearson point biserial analysis was then applied to evaluate the correlation of each drug administration to platelet count of DVI.  A total of 4005 patients with final diagnosed DVI involved in this study. About 11.0% and 25.1% of the patients received H2RA and PPI, respectively. Mostly the DVI patients receiving H2RA (55%) and PPI (50.8%) showed the platelet count <50.000/mm3. A very weak positive correlation between the administration of H2RA (p <0.001; r=0.103) and PPI (p <0.001; r=0.138) with the low platelet count of the patients was observed. In conclusion, the administration of H2RA and PPI is correlated to the low platelet count in DVI patients. Although the correlation is weak, H2RA and PPI should be administered with caution due to its thrombocytopenia side effect.

Abstract

Objective: To analyze the association of Ki-67 expression and response of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with invasive breast cancer.   Methods: A retrospective observational study on the association of Ki-67 expression and response of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with invasive breast cancer was conducted. This study included twenty-five female patients with invasive breast cancer who met the inclusion criteria. Parameters analyzed were age, tumor size, and immunohistochemical expression of Ki-67. Size of the tumor at pre- and post-neoadjuvant chemotherapy were obtained in cm3 and compared between 3 groups of Ki-67 expression levels. One way ANOVA was used to perform the statistical analysis. Results: A significant difference in changes of tumor size for Ki-67 level >20% compared to <14% and 14–20% was seen. Based on the result, neoadjuvant chemotherapy was proven to have similar effects in patients with Ki-67 expression of <14% and 14–20% but less effective in patients with Ki-67 expression of >20%. Conclusions: Low to modest expression of Ki-67 was a better biomarker to predict the response of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with invasive breast cancer compared to high expression of Ki-67. However, the cut-off value of 20% could be ideal to predict the outcome of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with invasive breast cancer. DOI: 10.15850/ijihs.v6n2.1374
