Abstract

This study is expected to provide an overview of the factors that affect TOEIC Passing Grades in TOEIC Intensive Course for Final Year Students. The purpose of this study is to conduct an empirical investigation whether the internal factor variable and external factors affect the variable of passing grade. The total populations in this study were 150 respondents. The data were collected through questionnaires. Data analysis was done by multiple regression using SPSS version 22. The result showed that internal factor had an effect on student's learning achievement, while external factor had no influence to the TOEIC passing grades. Keywords : Internal, external, intensive, TOEIC

Abstract

Reading is one of receptive skills which lead people learn the context from kinds of information. The readers should be able to find out the main information from the text cearly. In this study, the researcher focused on students’ comprehension skill on reading descriptive text. Having done a pre-research, it was found that there were many students found it difficult to find out specific information from the text they read. Due to the finding, the research was aimed at finding out whether Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) method was effective to improve students reading comprehension on descriptive text to second graders at SMPN 5 Takengon. Methodologically, this research referred to quantitative approach with experimental research design. The population of this research was all of the eight grade students of SMP N 5 Takengon with total number 112 students. As many 80 students were chosen to be samples which were divided into two classes, experimental and control, 40 students in each class. The data were analyzed by using t-test. It was found that the value of tobtained  is higher than ttable (6.66 > 2.02) at the level of significance 0,05. Meaning, Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) method affected students’ reading comprehension ability on descriptive text.

Abstract

This research aims at explaining the description of child language development to show the capability of a child in producing and comprehending language. This is a descriptive research in which the writer describes all the data like what it is. Next, for presenting the data, the writer used the written form in order to give more explanation to the reader. From the data conducted it shows that Children utter their first word when they are around one year old; Three years old child is able to produce around 950 words; 95% of the words said by three years old child is clear; Three years old child is able to use prepositions correctly; He also understands simple questions, can identify color and counts items; The dominant case of language when a child is around three years old is unclear and unfamiliar words.

Abstract

In learning English, there are several skills that should be learned by students such as listening, speaking, reading and writing. The students are expected to be able to master all language skills of English to communicate. In order to communicate there are components that the students must be able to acquire. Vocabulary is important to learn by students. One of ways to learn vocabulary is through a game. An Alvo Game was adapted from Game Guess Image and Scrabble game. The purpose of this study is to make Alvo Game to for elementary school students. The result of this study was a set of Alvo Game consists of plywood in which that there are twenty-nine double of alphabet and thirty pictures. The evaluation showed that it was suitable for elementary school students. By using this game, the students can learn vocabulary in a more interesting and attractive way.

Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this research was to investigate how the English teachers of Junior High School 4 Banjit, Way Kanan apply language assessment in teaching learning process. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The respondent is one of English teachers of that school. For collecting the data, the researcher employed observationand interview. The finding showed that the participant tend to less care toward assessment. It is caused by less of knowledge about the assessment itself. The participant was reluctant did the assessment because he felt that it is difficult to be conducted and complex matter. In conclusion the participant did not assess optimally and the assessments applied by the teacher were less able to present the result of students’ learning.  Key Words:  language, assessment, students’learning.

Abstract

Mastering grammar is important in learning English. In grammar, the words pattern and tenses should be considered as main focus for the discussion. Therefore, this study aimed to find out the ability of the students in completing sentences with correct gerund and to infinitive verb forms . This research was  a descriptive research. This study showed that the level of the students ability was at mediocre level. It was at 53. The error commonly occured slighly the same in completing both gerund and to infinitive verb forms. The average score of gerund was 52 and 54 points for to infinitive.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze and describe the types of English loanword in Teluk Buntal Malay sub-dialect. This was classified into descriptive research. The source of data was taken from the recorded dialogue which was interpreted into written data. The result of the study showed that there were 8 English loanwords that commonly used in daily conversation by the Malay people of Teluk Buntal. The type of English loanword discovered in this study encompassing loanword, loan blends and loan shift. Hence, all of the words found to be the most dominant type were loanwords and based on structure of English loanwords type, it was categorized into simple word in term of spelling and meaning.

Abstract

The research is aimed to know whether there is a significant difference of student’s vocabulary mastery between those who are taught by using Total Physical Response and those who are taught by using Direct Method. The researcher took the ninth grade student of Mambaúl Hikmah Islamic Boarding School Magelang as the population. There were 80 student. We used total random sampling and divided the student into two groups, group A as the Experimental group was taught using “Total Physical Response”and group B as the control group was taught by using “Direct Method”. The methods used to collect the data are documentation pre-test and post-test answer sheet. There were two tests given in this research. They were pre-test and post-test. To analyze the data the researcher used comparative analysis. The comparative formula of the data analysis used t-test calculation. The researcher used t-test to analyze the data. In which the pre-test score group A is 53, 275 that was higher than the second group. The post test score of group A is 67, 25 that was higher than the group B as the Control group. While t-test proves that difference is significant because the result of T-test is higher that the figure shown on the t-table. Based on the above result, the researcher concludes that there is significant difference between the student who are taught using “Total Physical Response” and those who were taught using “Direct Method”. It is better for English teacher to use “Total Physical Response” as one of technique in teaching vocabulary mastery for junior high school especially in the Islamic Boarding School.

Abstract

Abstract: The aims of this study are to find out the learning needs of the tenth grade students and to develop effective English learning worksheets for reading and writing skills qualifying on higher order thinking skills (HOTS) for the tenth grade students. This research and development (R&D) adopted the model research proposed by Dick, Carey, & Carey (2009) and Branch (2009). This study was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Pakem, Sleman. The effectiveness of the product was obtained through students’ English pretest and posttest score. There was the experiment class (XMIA1) and control class (XMIA2) group design. The mean score for pretest of the experimental class was 47.44, while the control class was 43.91. After learning using HOTS worksheets in the experimental class the mean obtain in the posttest was 90.56, while in the control class was 50.31.  The improvement of learning outcomes from the mean of N -Gain in experimental class was 0.81 in high category and the control class was 0.10 in low category. In the control class and experiment class had different learning result significantly. The result of the students’ agreements toward the product is within the data interval  ≥ 3.28 in good category. It can be concluded that the product are fairly effective to be applied in English teaching and learning processes.Keywords: Needs analysis, higher order thinking skills, designing English learning worksheet

Abstract

Abstract: This is aimed at: identifying whether or not DRTA improves students’ reading skill at the third semester of English Department of PNM. The method used in this research was classroom action research which had been conducted in two cycles at the third semester students of English Department of Madiun State Polytechnic. There were two kinds of data; qualitative data and quantitative data. The qualitative data were collected through the questionnaires, observation, field note, the interview of the students’ progress during teaching and learning process, and for quantitative data were collected by using test (pre and post test). The research finding shows that the use of DRTA could improve students’ reading skills and the classroom situation of Reading class. The improvement of students’ reading skill includes: (1) Students are identify the main idea of the text; (2) Students are able to find specific information in the text; (3) Students are able to find the purpose of the text; (4) Students are able to infer meaning ; (5) Students are able to determine references. Besides that the mean score of pre test, first post test, and the second post test that is 56.8, 62.26, and 68.66. The classroom situation also improved. The improvement class situation include: (1) The students are more active and enthusiastic in teaching learning process; (2) The students pay attention and involve in the activities during teaching learning process and (3) The Students feel more excited with the text used in the teaching learning process. Considering the result of this study, the implementation of DRTA in teaching reading conducted at English Department of PNM bring positive effects toward the students’ reading ability, so that it is important for lecturer to be consistent in implementing in order that the result of teaching and learning would be maximal. Finally, it is hoped for the researcher to use the result as aditional reference for further research especially research dealing with DRTA in teaching reading.
