Meanwhile, global environment problems are everybody's responsibility so that it will be better if everybody can make a contribution in offering a design solution to the surrounding environmental problem. The qualitative method in this research collected all the significant data from informants comprising both narrative and visual ones. This research is relevant to the present urban community's environmental requirements, especially about how toprevent threat to trees in rural area. By this research a lot of people is expected to understand why nailing trees or scratching them areforbidden because trees that have been hurted will produce bad timbers. Based on this conditions interior designers should have smart solutions using nature as their inspirations; this is commonly called biomimicry design. Keywords: sustainble interior design, biomimicry, local wisdom of Yogyakarta, method of choosing log timber.

Abstract

Keris is a traditional weapon developed in Java, Madura, Bali, and others. Geographical and environmental influence has resulted in the difference between its function and form as a practical weapon.  In Javanese life, it has been liberated from its limited function as a practical weapon. Keris is no longer a solely a stabbing weapon, but has grown in the Java community to be a sign or social attributes, and became a kind of embodiment of an ideology of philosophy of life. Keris is not just a physical work of art but also s symbolic one. For a reason, there are people who believe that the dagger has a magical power but there are also those who do not believe it. At present, people believing in the magical power of the keris believe that its making is not the business of everyone. For people who do not believe it, its may be done by anyone so there is a mass and commercial keris production in the form of things of product design. Keywords: keris, phyisical work, symbolic meaning, product design

Abstract

The problem that is often faced for small and medium industries is the limited capital they have. They feel unable to hire designers to produce innovative products. They also often objected to allocating funds to conduct design experiments that required a lot of funds that they found to be highly speculative. Many small and medium industries that are comfortable with their conditions, accept orders whose designs come from direct buyers. They only become producers who often have low bargaining positions in the presence of buyers. The price of production is even determined by non-producer buyers. As a result, despite the large number of orders, the welfare of business actors and employees is difficult to improve. UMKM Development Activities This art is done to overcome these obstacles. Pembina who is a lecturer in Product Design Study Program ISI Yogyakarta has the competence to carry out the product innovation development activities. Through a more collaborative activities between lecturers and business actors, some design products produced from clam waste, some of which are made of prototype. With these activities, it is expected that business actors are motivated to continuously make design innovations on the products it produces. Collaboration, for lecturers also have a positive impact, namely the development of insight into the material and engineering workmanship in the field which in turn can be used as learning materials on campus. Keywords: waste, clame, product design

Abstract

Application of batik techniques for decoration making on pottery products results in unique decorative motifs. Decorative motifs are formed by the process of color blocking using a substance called ‘malam’ (batik wax) on the surface of pottery, but the resulted colors are less bright. The adhesiveness of colors on the surface of pottery are also less strong. The purpose of this study is to optimize materials and batik pottery production process to improve the brightness and adhesion of the colors. Methods used are: (1) selection of pottery, (2) designing of motifs, (3) penyantingan/batik making, (4) staining (5) pelorodan / wax cleaning, (6) finishing, and (7) testing of fastness. The results show that the use of colorants rapid and naphthol produces brighter colors. The increasing color brightness is achieved with the initial step of selecting light colored pottery and completed with a final coating of transparent paint. Tests were performed on color resistancy to rubbing and midday direct light, with score ranging 1 - 5. The testing color resistancy to dry and wet rubbing results in a score of 3-4 (good enough). Color resistancy to direct midday light gets 4 (good). Brightness and fastness (strong adhesion) to transparently painted colors obtain a score of 5 (very good). Keywords: Increase of brightness, color adhesion, batik pottery

Abstract

Special Region of Yogyakarta has a lot of the furniture industry. Most of the industries are oriented to export products, while others tend to market them on the domestic market. The existence of the industry has a positive impact on the economy of the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The frequent furniture production that tends to increase over time, as a matter of fact, needs more raw materials. This rise of furniture production gives rise to a great volume of waste because it is not possible to reuse it to make furniture. The waste out of every 18-20 m3 wood are mainly in the form of 5-6 m3 of sawdust and 2-2.5 m3 wood chips. This paper describes the results of two workshops related to the utilization of wood waste. Workshop I was done by inviting participants from Small And Medium Enterpreneurship (SME) throughout Bantul by socializing design trends and international market to enable SME in Bantul can customize its design with the condition. Workshop II conducted as a follow-up to the workshop I, with output in accordance with the design trends of 2010.Keywords: meubel, home accessories, waste

Abstract

This article discusses three research approaches that can be used as a basis for redesigning a product. These three approaches are not all related because netnography is usually associated with ethnography, a well-known approach in anthropology. Although some of the examples given here are rather simple, in its limitations, it is expected that this article is useful for those who want to use these three approaches to redesigning a product. Key words: netnografi, semantic, redesign

Abstract

Yogyakarta city library applied an open access service system, in which the library users were given access to independently find and take the books in collection shelves. Those users were also asked to return the finished books to the returning books medium in the form of trolleys. Later these books in the trolleys would be returned by the librarians scheduled for shelving duty. Observation result showed that there are a lot of unreturned books because the trolleys of the returning mediums are too full. Librarian also faced many difficulties in classifying the book stacks before returned to the collection shelves because of their messy state. According to the design study and development employing front- end process method, process (Karl & Steven, 2008), this problem could be solved by developing design concept for books returning mediums in the form of shelves contained colors and book codes information according to the standard of Yogyakarta city library. The result design prototype trial showed the increasing library users’ interest to return the finished books to the returning books medium according to the color and code information. It would greatly help the librarians in classifying the books before the re-organizing in the collection shelves. Design development of the returning books medium would also open the opportunity to optimize the temporary flow of returning books which would be easily found by the other library users before the shelving schedule. Keywords: library, open access, book shelf, librarian, library user
