Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate 1) the types of the error made by the fourth-semester students of PGRI Wiranegara University in writing a cause-effect essay, and 2) the most frequent error made by the students in making cause-effect essay. The research uses descriptive quantitative design. The subjects of the study were the fourth-semester students of the English Education Study Program in the academic year 2019/2020 in the Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology, University of PGRI Wiranegara, East Java, Indonesia. The instrument used in the study was mainly a documentation of the students’ composition. The researchers used Hewing's theory in 2002 to analyze the errors. The data was analyzed based on seven categories. They are: (1) Errors in using verb group, (2) Errors in the agreement between subject and verb, (3) Errors in the use of the article, (4) Errors in the use preposition, (5) Errors in pluralization, (6) Error in the use of pronoun and (7) Error in the use of a conjunction. The result of the study shows that In total, there were 406 errors made by the students in writing cause-effect essay.The most frequent error made by the students is the use of preposition. This error occur 149 times in the students’ essay (36.70%). The second most frequent error is the use of article (28.57%) which occurs 116 times in the students’ essay. And the third most frequent error is in the use of subject-verb agrrement (7.88%) and pluralization (7.88%).

Abstract

One of the most popular ways of movie translation is subtitling. In order to make a quality subtitle, subtitler should deal with the limited time, limited space, and terminological problems. Special terms, such as automotive term, on subtitling could be found in a family movie. This is a challenge for the subtitler since the terms should be suitable for the audiences in a family movie, i.e. children and teens. This research focuses on: (1) analyzing the translation technique and the translation quality of automotive terms in Cars movie, presented in DVD and in the Internet version, and (2) comparing the quality of the translation of the two versions. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with the data sources: documents and informants. The research sampling technique is purposive to select the 45 data from the data sources. Data were collected through content analysis, individual interviews, and focus group discussion (FGD). All data are categorized into seven types. They are body part, car brand, car need, car race, engine, process, and miscellany. From the data, this study finds out that there are 12 different techniques applied by the DVD subtitler, compared with 14 different techniques applied by the Internet subtitler. The last finding points out that the quality of DVD translation of automotive terms is more accurate and more acceptable than the quality of the Internet translation. The techniques that produce the high level of accuracy are established equivalent and pure borrowing technique, while the techniques that make acceptable translations of automotive term are established equivalent and generalization technique.

Abstract

The research was distributed by speakers often use the speech act the imperative of using imperative is not directly on the show Talk Show on NET TV. This research was conducted to describe, first, the principle of politeness on the show is a Talk Show, and second; describe the shape of the speech act event is imperative on a Talk Show. This type of research is a qualitative descriptive method. This research instrument is its own researchers assisted with books relating to the research. This research data taken with video how to download this show Talk Show from Youtube Edition January 2016. Based on the results of the study can be summed up as the following things. First, the principle of politeness that is found in the speech act event is imperative on a Talk Show is the tact maxim , generosity maxim, agreement maxim, sympathy maxim. Second, the imperative form of the shareholder said on a Talk Show this event is imperative reigning speech act, telling, asking, pleading, urgent, cajoling, appealed, inviting, call request, permission, permit, prohibition, expectations, and advice.

Abstract

The study concerns with the slang word and  that occur in the Fate of the Furious Movie. The study aims to analyze the types of slang, the meaning of slang and the function of slang used in Fate of the Furious movie. This study used qualitative approach and the data collection was based on observation method by downloading the movie and movie script, watching the movie, looking through the scene and taking note. The theory used in this study are based on Leech (1981) there are five types of function of language and Chapman (2007) states there are two kind of slang: primary slang and secondary slang. The meanings of slang were taken from some online dictionaries that related to slang. This study reveals that there are 25 slangs which is found in Fate of the Furious movie. From the data, there are 22 primary slangs and 3 secondary slangs found. The meaning of slang mostly related to informational function which is focused on the speaker tends to inform something to the other characters in the movie. Abstract

Abstract: Mastering listening skill has been a great burden for intermediate to upper-intermediate students in Indonesian EFL context. The absence of real life exposures to native speakers of English strengthens student’s reluctance to frequently practice listening to English. Therefore, this paper will propose the listening logs applied in an extensive listening class to enhance student’s autonomy in improving their listening skill. The article will begin by highlighting some challenges faced by students in Listening class and some possible strategies to deal with them will be presented further. Later, relevant theories on extensive listening and learner autonomy will be discussed. Next, the author will introduce the listening logs followed by the procedures on how this is planned, implemented and evaluated. This paper offers an alternative for teachers to promote students’ in and out of class learning regarding their own pace and interest in extensive listening practice.

Abstract

Online learning is one of the big challenges that must be done in this Era. However many people less access and do not use the appropriate media to do it. Besides, they also lack of the application usage. However, Social Media is more popular today. Many people spend their time on social media for communicating, entertaining, selling, and etc. Therefore, using social media as the tool to do the communication in learning is possible to do. One of the popular social media that is used by the students today is Instagram, which has 70 million users in Indonesia. Thus, this research is aimed to find out the effectiveness of using Instagram in online learning. It is specified to the 3rd Semester students of English Department of IAIN Padangsidimpuan. It investigated the participation and feedback of students in learning process while using Instagram as the platform in learning activity. This research used descriptive qualitative research to analyse the students’ perception in implementing Instagram in learning process. The results show that Instagram is effective to be used as the tool for the students’ interaction especially in discussion which is related to the task activity and explanation. Besides, the students felt easier to use this application because it has been used by almost students of the 3rd semester of English Department of IAIN Padangsidimpuan.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to describe the students’ perception on using E-learning in Academic Writing. 71 students of English Department fourth semester in academic year 2019/2020 had taken a part in this study. Descriptive quantitative survey research was used with closed-ended form questionnaires as the instrument. The result of this research revealed that the use of E-learning in Academic Writing of English Department students of IAIN Kediri was not new for students. Students’ perceptions on using E-learning in Academic Writing was divided into three categories. The categories are student’s behavior on using E-learning in Academic Writing, students’ perceptions about E-learning operational and students’ perceptions about practicing Academic Writing using E-learning. The result showed positive responses from the respondents. Somehow, they disagree that the use of E-learning in Academic Writing could make them more confident, discipline and enjoy learning. It is because of the internet connection and misunderstanding with the teacher’s instruction. It can be said that E-learning restricted students’ interactions with the lecturer and their classmates. The research finding can be used as the evaluation for English language teaching in general.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the cognitive abilities of the main character in the short story Heaven for Children by Najib Mahfudz. Cognitive abilities are one of the developmental aspects of knowledge or understanding, namely all psychological processes related to how a person learns and thinks about the environment. The main character in the short story is a child who talks with his father about divinity and death. In the conversation the researchers found that the child could not understand some of the father's explanations. This is likely influenced by the thinking ability of children who have difficulty understanding conceptual things. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. Results from this research is expected to be able to explain the ability of the main character in the short story so that it becomes learning for parents or teachers in explaining conceptual things to children

Abstract

This research intends to analyze how Higher Order Thinking Skills are reflected in summative assessment used by Tenth-grade English teachers from HOTS perspective based on Revised Bloom's Taxonomy. This research used qualitative research with a content analysis method to know the extent of HOTS items that are reflected in the teacher-made test. To collect the data, document analysis and interviews were applied. From the data that have been obtained, it was found out that the HOTS-based item used by the teachers was still relatively low. There were only 6 out of 125 items that can be categorized as HOTS-based items with a percentage of 4.8%. HOTS-based items that have been found were also limited to the Analyze category (C4). In the C4 level, three indicators or sub-skills were included such as differentiating, organizing, and attributing. Among six HOTS-based items, 2 items were categorized as differentiating indicators, 1 item belonged to the organizing indicator, and 3 items were attributing indicator. Furthermore, the result of the interview indicated that the teachers need to learn more about HOTS to get a better understanding in constructing HOTS-based items.
