Abstract

[English]: The fragmentation of thinking structure is a failed construction existing in students’ memory due to disconnections on what they have learned. It makes students undergo difficulties and errors in solving mathematical modeling problems. There is a need to prevent permanent fragmentations. The problem-solving involving modeling problems requires translational thinking, changing from source representations to targeted representations. This research aimed to formulate undergraduate students’ effort in restructuring their fragmented translational thinking (defragmentation of translational thinking structure). The defragmentation was mapped through the CRA framework (checking, repairing, ascertaining). The subjects were three of eighty-five 4th and 6th-semester students. Data were analyzed through three stages; categorization, reduction, and conclusion. The analysis resulted in three types of defragmentation of translational thinking structure: from verbal representations to graph representations, from graph representations to symbolic representations (algebraic forms), and from the graph and symbolic representations to mathematical models. The finding shows that it is essential for mathematics educators to allow students to manage their thinking structures while experiencing difficulties and errors in mathematical problem-solving. Abstract

[English]: Culture is believed to be one of the factors that influence mathematical learning. It supports the idea of culturally responsive mathematics education. This qualitative study aimed to investigate students’ spatial abilities and the possible linkages of cultural differences (parenting) with the abilities. Data were collected through questionnaires, initial ability tests, spatial ability tests, and interviews. The study began with the identification of the students’ culture from two different rural areas, namely Lalar Liang (LL) and Labu Lalar (LB), using a questionnaire, and a preliminary test was administered for the classification of students' mathematical abilities. Furthermore, six students were selected as subjects from the two cultures based on the high, medium, and low groups to be given a spatial reasoning test. In the last stage, the selected subjects were interviewed to identify the possible relationship between their culture and spatial ability. The students’ answers were analyzed according to the indicators of spatial ability and linked to the culture of students from the two areas. The findings show that students from LL have a better understanding of the dimensions of objects from various sides and the changes of the object shapes after rotating than from LB. The results of the interview indicated that there was a possible relation of parenting on students' thought patterns in solving mathematics problems. However, this needs to be proven by further empirical studies. Keywords: Spatial abilities, Cultural differences, Parenting, Mathematical learning [Bahasa]: Kultur dipercaya menjadi salah satu faktor yang mempengaruhi pembelajaran matematika.

Abstract

[English]: This study examined the effect of Problem-based Learning (PBL) on students' creative mathematical thinking in Indonesia during the last eight years using meta-analysis. Data were obtained from primary studies published in national journals, conference proceedings, and master thesis from 2012 to 2020. This study analyzed 19 effect sizes from 19 primary studies that fulfill the inclusion criteria. The effect size index used the Hedges' g equation and statistical analysis was assisted by comprehensive meta-analysis (CMA) software. The effect size variation test was conducted by analyzing the study's five characteristics, namely the year of study, level of education, sample size, length of treatment, and publication sources. Based on the analysis results, the overall effect size was 0.821, with a standard error of 0.130 at the 95% confidence interval (CI) referring to the random-effects model. The effect size is classified as moderate, meaning that PBL has a moderately positive effect on students' creative mathematical thinking. The results of the analysis of the characteristics of the study show that the application of PBL to improve students' mathematical creative thinking relates to the research year (Q = 55.683; p <0.05), the treatment duration (Q = 5.644; p <0.05), and publication sources (Q = 13.812; p <0.05). It was found that the PBL was more effective in conditions of treatment duration of fewer than four meetings. There is a tendency that PBL has a significant impact when it is first implemented. The findings' implications are discussed to provide important information as a basic idea for further PBL research and implementation. Keywords: Problem-based learning, Creative thinking, Meta-analysis [Bahasa]: Penelitian ini menguji pengaruh problem-based learning (PBL) terhadap berpikir kreatif matematis siswa di Indonesia selama delapan tahun terakhir melalui meta-analisis. Abstract

[English]: This study aims to determine the level of lower secondary school students’ ability in solving mathematical word problems and how much both mathematical modelling ability and verbal ability influence the ability to solve word problems in the implementation of Kurikulum 2013 (Curriculum 2013). This study involved 411 students as samples determined by stratified proportional random sampling technique. The test used was declared valid through construct validity and reliability with Cronbach's alpha. Data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. Descriptively, the students' ability in solving mathematical word problems was classified as medium. Meanwhile, inferentially, results were obtained indicating that: (1) students' verbal ability is significantly influential on the ability to solve word problems by 47.6%; (2) the students’ ability in mathematical modelling is significantly influential on the ability to solve word problems by 84.6%; and (3) students' verbal and mathematical modelling abilities are significantly influential on the ability to solve word problems by 87.8%. This indicates that the increase in students' ability to solve mathematical word problems will be more optimal if the verbal ability and the mathematical modelling ability are considered simultaneously, rather than focusing on one ability only.  Keywords: Verbal ability, Mathematical modelling, word problems, Curriculum 2013  [Bahasa]: Penelitian ini bertujuan menentukan tingkat kemampuan siswa SMP menyelesaikan soal cerita matematika dan seberapa besar pengaruh kemampuan membuat model matematika dan verbal terhadap kemampuan menyelesaikan soal cerita pada pelaksaaan kurikulum 2013. Abstract

[English]: Visuospatial reasoning is indispensable in solving mathematical problems, especially geometry. However, many students face difficulty in visuospatial reasoning. This qualitative study aims to describe eighth-grade students' visuospatial reasoning in solving geometry problems in terms of gender differences. One male and one female student with high mathematics ability were involved. A test and interview were utilized to collect data. The test was used to investigate students' visuospatial reasoning and the interview was administered to confirm students' reasoning. Students’ test and interview results were analyzed in three stages: data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing and verification. This study found that both male and female students' visuospatial reasoning in solving the problems is at the synthesis level. However, at the synthesis level, when identifying the spatial relationships between objects, the male student expresses information from the overall view scheme, while the female student expresses part by part of the view scheme. Keywords: Visuospatial reasoning, Geometry problems, Gender [Bahasa]: Penalaran visuospasial sangat diperlukan dalam menyelesaikan masalah matematika terutama pada masalah geometri.
