Abstract

Space truss is a three dimensional structure composed of short slender interconnected bars. The bars are selected to produce lightweight members. Since joints are frictionless pins, truss members carry out only axial force either tension or compression, without bending moment. Bamboo is a potential building material for this structure, because it is relatively light and high strength especially in tension. This research is aimed to develop bamboo joint that could carry out both tension and compression and it application in space truss for 3 m x 4 m simple roof structure.Connection designed using a taper rounded wooden plug attached to the inner part of bamboo and a tapered steel ring was used at the outside of the bamboo culm. Structural analysis using a program with finite element methods indicated that 4 cm diameter bamboo could use for 3 m x 4 m space truss with four supports, whereas for  cantilever  truss, the used of 4 cm diameter bamboo must be varied by using 6 cm diameter bamboo for elements  that resist larger compression force.

Abstract

The main problem of making Sisal fiber cement bonded board is how to mix fibers and cement to get excellent performance of board due to the presence of extractives.  Steam treatment on fibers is expected to reduce extractives in the fibers; therefore it will improve the bonding between fibers and cement. Beside that, utilization of catalysts, such as calcium chloride (CaCl2) and magnesium chloride (MgCl2), is expected to increase the physical and mechanical properties of Sisal fiber cement bonded board. Fibers of Sisal was chopped into 0.5 ~ 1.0 cm of length. Steam treatment was conducted in autoclave for 30, 60 and 120 minutes at 1.15 atm of pressure and 121ºC of temperature, and untreated Sisal as control. Chopped fiber was dried in an oven at 60ºC to obtain 5% of moisture content.  The content of CaCl2 or MgCl2 was 5% of cement weight. The board was produced at a dried fiber : cement ratio of 1 : 3 and water : cement ratio of 1 : 2 based on board weight.  The target density of the boards produced was 1.25 g/cm3.  Cement bonded Sisal fiber was formed into 25cm x 25cm x 1cm mat, and then cold pressed for 24 hours. Composites were conditioned at room temperature for 28 days. Physical and mechanical characteristics were tested by Universal Testing Machine (UTM). Results shown that combination of steam treatment and catalyst added improved the physical and mechanical properties such as thickness swelling (TS), modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), screw withdrawal (SW) and internal bond (IB).

Abstract

Teak (Tectona grandis L.f.) wood has gained its high reputation for natural durability, weather resistance, and appearance. The heartwood quality of 15, 25, and 72-year-old teak trees from forest plantation was assessed in relation to chemical and colour properties. With tree age, an increasing tendency was found in the ethanol-benzene and water soluble extractive contents, whereas a decreasing tendency was observed in the pH value. Furthermore, from the ethanol-benzene components, the contents of tectoquinone, squalene, and total quinone increased with age. With regard to the colour properties, the brightness (L*), yellowness (b*), hue (h), and chroma (C*) levels tended to decrease while the redness (a*) level fluctuated with tree age

Abstract

A research has done on the morphology and mechanical properties of abaca fiber. The investigation of morphology is observed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Weibull distribution technique is performed to evaluate the variation of fibers strength. And the mechanical properties are tested by using single filament tensile tester (Statimat). The result showed that Abaca is bundle fibers with the diameter of cross-section is about 176 μm. Mechanical strength of fiber is 381 MPa with elongation at break is 1.6 %. And the value of modulus Weibull is 2.69.

Abstract

Research on some properties of wood Pine (Pinus merkusii Jungh et de Vriese) to determine technical rotation for wood construction materials matched to the technical requirements. Pine wood investigated originated from KPH Sukabumi, West Java, from site index III and age of 17, 21, 23, 27 and 28 years. The results showed that morphology, diameter at breast height (DBH), sawing recovery, volume, veneer recovery and bonding strength were not significantly different at 95% confidence level. DBH and cylindricity tend to increase from age of 17 years until 27 years and decrease at 28 years in parabolic. The maximum DBH reach at 25 years, while cylindricity at 26 years. The sawing recovery tends to increase from 17 to 21 years, decrease at 23 years and increase at 27 years. Screw withdrawal resistance of five age level wood tested were significantly different. The relationship between age and wood properties tested tends to the same pattern, paraboloid, while volume and veneer recovery were linear. Differentiated of these equation showed that maximum DBH reach at age of 25, sawing recovery 28 years, maximum density and screw withdrawal resistance at 23 years, bonding strength and wettability at 22 years. Based on its machining properties, wood from 17-21 years belong to class II, and class I for 23 ~ 28 years.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to produce natural rubber-based Aqueous Polymer Isocyanate (API) adhesives that could meet standard for exterior grade plywood adhesive.  Base polymers used were Natural Rubber Latex (NRL), Natural Rubber Latex - Styrene (NRL-St), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH).There were two kinds of adhesives produced; one was using NRL and PVOH as base polymers, and the other one was using NRL-St and PVOH as base polymers.  Isocyanate crosslinking agent was added to each kind of adhesives at 2.5; 5; 10; 15 and 20% of the weight of the base polymers.  They were measured for their total solid content (gravimetric method), pH (using pH meter), specific gravity (using picnometer) and viscosity (using Brookfield viscometer). Thermal analyses using TG/DTA was conducted at the addition of 0, 5 and 15% cross-linking agent. The adhesives were spread on the surface of Red Meranti  (Shorea sp.) veneers (250 x 250 x 2.1 mm core; 250 x 250 x 1.5 mm face and back) at the glue spread rate 400 g/m2 DGL (double glue line). The veneers with adhesives were cold pressed at 10 kg/cm2 for 10 minutes and then hot pressed at 10 kg/cm2, 110ºC for 5 minutes.  The plywood produced was conditioned for 2 weeks, then they were measured for their bond strength, delamintaion ratio, water absorption, and thickness swelling. Results of this study showed that either NRL or NRL-St could be used as one of base polymers in preparing API adhesive.  Bond strength of plywood adhered with API adhesives made of NRL-St at all levels of isocyanate crosslinking agent addition were higher than those made from NRL. The addition of 10% or more isocyanate croslinkers to NRL/PVOH (50:50) or to NRL-St/PVOH (50:50) could produce plywood having bond strength that could meet interior grade standard.  Plywood having bond strength of exterior grade standard were produced when 15% or more isocyanate crosslinkers were added to NRL-St/PVOH (50:50) or when 20% or more isocyanate crosslinkers were added NRL/PVOH (50:50).

Abstract

Tracking the origin of Teak timber and its wood product is possible to be carried out using stable isotopes fingerprinting.  To enrich the available variation patterns, Teak woods samples were collected from nine Forest Management Units (FMUs) representing all provinces and Teak centres in Java.  Mills from all part of woods were mixed for analyses.  The mills were burned under vacuum in a reactor system at 1200oC for 2 h, the resulting clean CO2 was transferred to the mass spectrometer to determine its isotopic composition of δ13C and δ18O.  The generated data was then analysed using multivariate analysis.  The results showed that isotopes analysis grouped Teak populations in Java intoWest Java population and mixed Central-East Java population.  To consider wood as material for fingerprinting traded forest product, a refinement on method should be done.
