JLA (Jurnal Lingua Applicata) is an academic journal in Indonesian published by the Departemen Bahasa Seni dan Manajemen Budaya (DBSMB), Sekolah Vokasi UGM, which manages several Diploma majors in foreign languages. JLA accepts scientific articles in the field of study in applied foreign languages, especially in English, Japanese, Mandarin, and Korean. JLA aims to provide comprehensive knowledge of the applicative aspects of foreign languages in its real-life practice, especially in academic and workspace settings. Abstract

This research aims to explain the nature of request speech acts in Korean culture and the factors underlying the use of request speech acts. The research data in this study came from non verbal data showed on short message service Kakao Talk. The data were then analyzed using qualitative methods and presented descriptively. By using Pragmatic theory and theory of request strategy by Byeon, it can be concluded that the supportive moves or modified utterances are found to appear before or after the head of the request. There are usages of, 1) opening, 2) preparatory statements, 3) apology, 4) gratitude, 5) rewards, and 6) burden minimizer. The supportive moves indicates the speaker's attempt to soften the speech acts as well as to prevent the request from being rejected. In addition, in the use of supportive moves, Korean speakers also pay attention to the listeners, age, familiarity, speech situation, and social status. This is because the request speech act is a potential threat to the listeners’ face, so that Korean speakers are especially thoughtful in their face-to-face conversation with other people. This behavior is in accordance with the culture of the Korean people who are concerned with the relationship between individuals, which is manifested through the use of supportive moves.

Abstract

This study compares the use of responding praise strategies by 20 subjects of Japanese language learners and 20 native speakers. Using DTC (Discourse Complement Test) as an instrument which consists of 18 situations, the data of 360 sentences were then analyzed using a semantic formula from the concept of Korsatianwon Sayan (2003) that divides the response of praise into 15 strategies, namely: gratitude, approval expression, happy expression, praise upgrade, disagreement, suspect intent, comment acceptance, reassignment, empty, return, question, change topic, scale down, laugh and shame or shock. In conclusion, many Japanese language learners respond to praise with the strategy of rejecting praise. This is in accordance with the concept of ‘refusing praises’ in the East, which means humbling ourselves. Meanwhile, the native speakers of Japanese respond to praise with ‘being grateful’ strategy. This is in accordance with the conception of ‘thank you’ in the West to respond to praises, which aims to maintain the positive face of the other person.

Abstract

This paper aims at addressing the issue of speaking anxiety in ESL/EFL learning. This study of literature is believed to be significant as it can give insights into ESL/EFL anxiety and how it can be coped. In doing so, this paper starts with the description of the nature of language anxiety in ESL/EFL learning particularly speaking anxiety, its theoretical overview, causes of such an anxiety, and its effects on ESL/EFL learning. Furthermore, there is a review of studies on strategies used to cope with language and speaking anxiety in ESL/EFL learning or classrooms. These coping strategies can be classified into two categories, namely 1) self-employed strategies employed by anxious learners consisting of five strategies--in which two are inapplicable, and 2) employed by teachers, which consists of three strategies. Those strategies are able to help overcome the learner’s anxiety, leading to the more successful ESL/EFL learning. In addition, in ESL/EFL classrooms teachers play a key role in relieving anxiety experienced by their students. In conclusion, speaking anxiety can have debilitating impacts on learners experiencing it. However, this problem can be overcome with strategies employed by learners and their teachers.

Abstract

Concrete and practical competencies matching the workforce needs have an essential role in constructing the employability of the graduates, especially during MEA era where the graduates are expected to compete internationally. To accommodate this purpose, D-III English SV-UGM provides a number of professional concentrations for the students, including Business Administration (BA) and Public Relation (PR) to give them practical skills that are applicable in the workforce. In light of this circumstance, the present research aims at remapping the graduate competencies to be mastered by the students of D-III English concentrating on BA and PR and revealing the intersections of the competencies. Library study, questionnaire administration, and interview were conducted to obtain the data from the stakeholders. The results show that the graduates concentrating in BA are highly expected to give excellent service to the clients and customers, to maintain documents and letters, and have a good archival knowledge. Meanwhile, the graduates with PR concentration should be able to have good communication skills and understanding about the computer and media use. Furthermore, the graduates from both concentrations are expected to perform Occupational Health and Safety Environment, and have a good interpersonal skill to enable them to work effectively with their colleagues.

Abstract

Technology, including computers and internet, cannot be separated from Indonesians. At the beginning of computers and internet existence in Indonesia, the government took an initiative to make computers and internet equivalent terms through Presidential Decree No. 2 Year 2001. This aimed to ease Indonesians in using computers and/or internet. This effort then generated “Senarai Padanan Istilah" consisting of 711 equivalents from 629 English terms. This study aims to investigate Indonesians’ comprehension, language preference, including their reason in choosing a particular language regarding computer and/or internet terms. The data were obtained from online questionnaire. The data obtained then were used to investigate Indonesians’ comprehension of the terms as well as their language preference relating to the computer and/or internet terms. The results are then presented descriptively. This research results in: 1) Indonesians have a fairly high understanding related to computer and/or internet equivalent terms; 2) however, Indonesians prefer English to bahasa Indonesia, as many as 91.9% of the respondents; 3) English preference by the  respondents is motivated by English terms familiarity, English terms ease to be understood, the lack of appropriateness of the equivalent terms, English shorter terms, and the unavailability of equivalent terms in the computer program they run.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the errors in the construction of Japanese passive sentence. This research involves Indonesian Japanese language students of semester IV. The sample of this research is Indonesian essay in 200 words. Quantitative and qualitative methods are used based on the error establishment definition of Japanese passive sentence Ichikawa (2005). The research result  shows that the students make mistake in changing the Japanese passive verb form by 53%, the error in particle selection as much as 24%, the error in the subject structuring and object complement 18% and error in sentence formation of  Yari-morai (giving-taking) as much as 5%. The error in changing the Japanese passive verb form is caused by a lack of practice and understanding of Japanese passive forms. Error in particle selection is caused by negative transfer factor. The lack of students 'understanding of the formation of Japanese passive sentences causes learners to tend to arrange subjects and principals' objects in Japanese passive sentences following the Indonesian passive sentence arrangement rules. The results of this study can provide an overview for Japanese language teachers, especially about the acquisition of learning passive Japanese sentence language among Indonesian students to be able to make a variety of a more creative teaching.

Abstract

The focus of this article is vocabulary acquisition of Japanese through demonstrative methods. This article is the result of research on the methods of vocabulary acquisition of Nursing Science students of Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Udayana. This article aims to explain the use of language teaching methods and strategies in non-language classes. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. This article refers to the concept and theories formulated by Bandura (1986). Natural methods are used in learning Japanese grammar. Vocabulary acquisition can be obtained through the explanation of simple vocabularies that is started from a classroom environment, or through the dictionary used in the study. While, in conversation learning, the methods used are shadowing method and conversation method, which is supported by demonstrative strategies and the “question and answer” strategy. The strategy is employed by providing similar questions to all of the learners that make them try to look for different vocabularies to answer the question. The demonstrative strategy is used for observation, imitation and repetition, as well as development of the material of the context in real life situations.

Abstract

Literary subjects are usually presented through lecturing the students in the classroom, leading them into a stage of boredom. Conversely, learning method has shifted from teacher-centered to student-centered. This way, active learning becomes necessary. The study aims to know the students’ perception on the use of active learning, especially cooperative learning, in Drama Prose Poetry subject.  The research belongs to descriptive qualitative study, using closed and open questionnaires to obtain qualitative and quantitative data. The participants are 83 students taking Drama Prose Poetry subjects in the department of English Education. The results show that more than half of the participants (58 in number) agree to be more active in the classroom. Four types of cooperative learning methods are applied in the study: gallery walk, jigsaw, information gap, and drawing. Among the four activities, most students chose gallery walk as their favorite (53 in number).

Abstract

One of the efforts to improve the quality of human resources is by building links and matches between educational institutions and industry.  This link and match will support the growth of skilled human resources who can contribute optimally in various fields. In this regard, the question that often arises is whether universities, as institutions that play a role in educating young people, have produced graduates who have competencies that are in line with the needs of the industries. This research was conducted to identify hard skills and soft skill s typically required by the industries related to Japan and needed to be mastered by the graduates of Japanese Language/Literature Study Program who are working as Japanese speaking professional. Besides, this research aimed to analyze the weaknesses and problems faced by Japanese speaking professional when carrying out their work. The research data were collected from Japanese speaking professionals and the representative from Japanese companies located in Indonesia using questionnaires and interviews. Data obtained were then analyzed by referring to several references, including the results of the research conducted by M.M. Robles (2012) related to hard skills and soft skill s. The study finding about the strengths and weaknesses of Japanese Language Study Program graduates in Indonesia, can lead to improvement of the Japanese language learning, especially Japanese language learning in universities in Indonesia. So that the results of the study are expected to be taken into consideration in preparing and developing the curriculum of Japanese Language Studies Program in Universities, not only in the Vocational School of UGM, but also in other institutions in Indonesia.

Abstract

Fluency in reading is one of the important factors in language learning, especially foreign languages. Fluency in reading can be seen from understanding vocabulary, reading speed, rhythm and expression, also understanding the reading’s contents. Reading fluently is one of the effective learning methods to help for understanding the vocabulary and the content of the text. Reading fluency is needed by Korean leaners when working with Korean stakeholders. This study analyzes the fluency of Korean language learners in reading Korean texts using qualitative descriptive methods. This study found that the learning period and the Korean Language Proficiency Test score of the learner are not always directly assesed to leaner’s fluency in reading. Fluency in reading is also influenced by some factors, such as how much intensity and frequency of learners learn new vocabulary through text, and how instructors provide learning about morphology in how to read a word in Korean.
