Abstract

Learning in early childhood requires special understanding due to the character of children who are easily bored; particularly in case of English learning process that is not their mother tongue. One of children’s character is that they love all forms of games, so the game could be considered as one way to attract the their curiousity. Thus, game can be used as a medium for young learner especially in kindergarten to learn English. This paper provides an elaboration how to use a game to improve English learning process for young learner. The method of this study used Classroom Action Research. The game is Java-based and the content of the game is based on kindergarten curriculum that contains of some important basic aspects covered by English Language development aspect for kindergarten. To sum up, through game, the students of kindergarten feel fun and challenging to fulfill the the game, and in other side unconsciously they have learned English as well.

Abstract

Semantics is the study of the meaning of words, phrases and sentences. Connotative meaning can be found in literary work including song lyrics. A song can also become a media to introduce social values. In this study, the researcher focus on connotative meaning using Chaer’s (2013) theory and sense a values of American people using theory by Khols (1984). The data source in this study are Justin Bieber’s song lyrics. This research was done by analyzing the data qualitatively. Techniques of data collection are done by downloading the song and the lyrics, listening the song, reading the lyrics and watching the videos. Data analysis was done by adapting Miles and Huberman’s theory (1984). The step of data analysis are: reduction of data, display of data, verification of data and conclusion. The result of the research describe words contain connotative meaning and values of American people. The total of data contain connotative meaning are sixteen, six words include in equality/egalitarianism Americans values, four words include in material/acquisitiveness American values, one word include in time and its control American values, three words include in change American values and one word include in self-help concept American values.

Abstract

This research was about commissive acts uttered by characters and the aims behind the use of commissive acts in The Hunger Games : Mockingjay Part 2 movie. In conversation, commissive acts are threatening, promissing, vowing, refusing, etc. The research data was in the form of utterances that contained commissive acts uttered by the characters in the movie. To analyze the data, the researcher used Spradley’s theory (1998) which covered : data analysis; domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, componential analysis, and cultural value. This research was conducted by accomodating two theories: Levinson (1983) in analyzing commissive acts and Searle & Vanderveken (1985) in analyzing the aims of commissive acts. The result of the research showed that the were twenty five data that indicated as the relevant data. From the data, the researcher found five aims behind the use of commissive acts in the movie; they were planning, refusing, offering, promising, and threatening. The most dominant aim behind the use of commissive acts were planning (ten data) and promissing (seven data) while the least dominant were refusing (four data), offering ( two data), and threatening (two data).

Abstract

Bullying is such a key problem in our schools and society because it impacts a large number of students of all races, genders, and socioeconomic statuses. Here the researcher identified types of bullying and described impacts of bullying in Mean Girls Movie. The data were in the form of utterances and actions implicated bullying in Mean Girls Movie. The steps to analyze the data were: identifying and classifying data based on the types of bullying used by The National Centre Againts Bullying (2010) and psychoanalysis from Freud (1973) in Storey (2009:91), describing impacts of bullying using theory of Righby (2003) in Darmawan (2010:23), and making conclusion based on the types and impacts of bullying in the Mean Girls Movie. The findings of the analysis reveal that there were twelve data which covered: four verbal bullying, one physical bullying, two psychological bullying, and five social bullying. Meanwhile, for the impacts of bullyings to the characters who get bullied, the researcher found low psychological well-being, poor social adjustment, and no response to the bullyings. The researcher expects the next researchers to do the analysis on bullying with other object of research and different relevant theories.

Abstract

Meaning concepts is always being an interesting topic in linguistics especially about antonymy. Antonymy is not only found in absolute term but also in other ones. This research then tried to discuss antonymy in Bahasa Indonesia particularly in military terms, time and taste terms. The method used was Relation by Contrast-Lexical Contrast (RC-LC). Furthermore, as the result it was found that antonymy had some variants such as: non binary antonymy, contrastive antonymy, and gradation antonymy.

Abstract

Literature teaching at school is aied to give the basic of literary awareness to the students, so they can learn to love and appreciate literature well based on the literary rules they have got. One example of literary works is shortstory.we can teach students short story in listening class. However, their literary competence is found out to be low. Therefore, the teacher proposed TGT method to improve students’ literary competence. The results reveals that working activities during listening show students’ positive appreciation to literature. However, the teacher should have more give attention to the aspects of short story.

Abstract

Low self-esteem is unworthy feeling because of less attention, love, affection and trust. The impact of low self-esteem could make negative feeling. It is not only to their own life, but also to their surrounding society. Low self-esteem can also be triggered by mistakes that came from parents, family, society and also teacher. The worst effect of low self-esteem in adolescence is on their academic score. They will get bad score because they do not have self confidence to do the assignment or try new experiences. This research purposed to find the low self-esteem, the factor of low self-esteem and the problem solving which is found in the action, gesture and utterance of main characters in the movie The Ron Clark Story. This research used descriptive qualitative research, because the researcher described the data that portray of low self-esteem. The researcher analyzed the data by using psychoanalytic analysis approach from Sigmund Freud. The data was analyzed by describing the low self-esteem in the movie The Ron Clark Story based on Tyson’s theory and the problem solving from Lachmann and Ron Clark’s theory. The researcher found 40 data of low self-esteem that showed in the movie The Ron Clark Story. The dominant factor was the academic challenges without caregiver’s support. The problem solving based on the movie The Ron Clark Story were classified into eight components. The most important component was implementing the class’s rules, followed by giving an appreciation, attention, care, trust, motivation, and help when they get difficulties, making innovation teaching method (especially for the teacher). Cooperation between parents and teachers are very important for the growth of the self-esteem and worthy to get the best potential of children’s life.

Abstract

Taboo word usually could be found in movies, including in Death Race 2. I this research the researcher analyzed the kind of taboo words, the dialect and subtitle, quality of translation, and the impact of the kind of taboo word cases and the impacts of the casse to the quality of translation. The analysis was started by identifying the kind taboo words, continued with the quality of the text translation which is decided of the result of assessment in accuracy, acceptability, and readability by Nababan et. al. The findings of the analysis revealed that there were 75 taboo words found in the movie Death race 2 with 10 cases of kind of taboo word for its translation. Meanwhile, the quality of translation was analyzed to be; 48 were Accurate, 20 were less accurate, 7 were not accurate. 23 were acceptable, 17 were less acceptable, 35 were not acceptable. 57 were high readable, 15 were less readable, and 3 were not readable. At whole, the result of case about changed and unchanged taboo word translation in Death Race 2 movie are included into accurate, less acceptable and have high readability with the accuracy assessment is 2.68, acceptability assessment is 2.30, readability assessment is 2.79. Overall, the result of quality taboo word translation is 2.58. It means that they are less qualified translation.

Abstract

The study focused on the written discourse, of the short story entitled No Witchcraft For Sale. The texts were pragmatically interpreted based on Searle’s theory of Speeh Act. This research discussed how intensions in uttering words were affected by preparatory conditions. The goals were to explain the three aspects of Speeh Act (locution, illocution and perlocution) and to describe the effects of preparatory conditions on the intensions. The data in this study were qualitative, because they were sentences taken from the short story. This is a literary research which used the descriptive analysis. Some intensions found in the utterances were declaring, thanking, asserting, claiming, commanding, congratulating, insisting, stating, telling, exclaiming, entreating, concluding, questioning, daring, asking, greeting, and blessing. These intensions were surely affected by the preparatory conditions. Contexts played important roles in conveying intentions.

Abstract

The research applied psychoanalysis and psychological approaches to analyze Christian’s sexual deviation in Fifty Shades movies. This research used descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. The research aimed at analyzing the causes of Christian’s sexual deviation and the personality impact of his sexual deviation. The objects of this research were the first and second movies of Fifty Shades trilogy, they were Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Darker. The data of this research were taken from Christian’s dialogues, utterances, and actions related to the topic of this research. The findings of this research showed that Christian had sexual deviation related to sadistic things from his traumatic experience. Christian also had personality disorders as the impact of his sexual deviation. Christian had three personality disorders: histrionic, obsessive-compulsive, and narcissistic personalities.
