Abstract

Hospital wastewater derived from the laundry activities contains chemical compounds and pathogenic microorganisms that cause not only diseases to the surrounding community but also pollution. These effects increase the Biologycal Oxygent Demand (BOD) and the Chemical Oxygent Demand (COD) that lead foul-smelling and black-colored surface of the water. However, used syringe biofiltration can be employed to process this waste. This study aimed at testing the used syringe-biofiltration in reducing the BOD and COD levels in laundry waste at Dr. Soedarso hospital Pontianak. A quasi-experimental design with one group pretest posttest was carried out in this study. Laboratory test result showed that the average BOD level before processing was 103.63 mg/l and after processing into 46.41 mg/l, with an efficiency of 55.21 %. In addition, the average COD level before processing was 413.70 mg/l, and processing was 195.88 mg/l with an efficiency of 45.92 %. This study suggests the management of the hospital to pay more attention on the pH value and the use of blower in using used syringe biofiltration method and to consider used syringe biofiltration method to process wastewater. Keywords : Laundry waste, biofilter, used syringe, BOD, COD

Abstract

LBW rate West Kalimantan in 2013 is much higher at 14.8% than the national rate is 10.2% of LBW. Besides the rate of weighing babies when birth has reached 70% and many people are childbirth at home around 66.6%. The calibrated-scales and unskilled midwives make a risk of LBW. LBW have a significant impact on the nutritional status of infants and will affect the development phase and furthermore babies growth. The research aims to get gain sensitivity and specificity calf circumference measurement as a low birth weight babies in Sambas district in 2015.This study used a cross-sectional design. 268 babies predictor samples are determined by using total sampling. The test used is an epidemiological screening (sensitivity and specificity) and Pearson correlation. The results showed that the calf circumference measurement has a high sensitivity 93%, specificity of 88.28%, and the value of Pearson correlation 0.667 (66.7%).Potential of calf circumference in predicting LBW case is very good, and therefore required new innovation to the specific measurement tool that fits calf circumference cut of point making it easier for health professionals in the measurement when the scale does not exist. Keywords       : Low birth weight, Calf circumference, Sensitivity, Specificity

Abstract

Styrofoam is a syntheticaromatic polymer made from the monomer styrene. The use of improper food containers can result in the migration of monomer styrene into the food so that it can pose a significant risk of diseases such as headache, fatigue, depression, and anemia. The migration caused by the temperature, the duration of use, and the type of food. This study aimed at analyzing the factors related to the use of foam food containers among food-sellers in Kota Pontianak.Using analytic descriptive method and cross sectional design, as many as 52 samples participated in this study. The study revealed that as many as 51.9% food-sellers used Styrofoam as the food containers. There were no correlation of heat resistant, obtainability, affordability and the use of food foam containers. From the findings, the foo-sellers need to pay attention on the packaging feassibility. They are encouraged to find out the health standard of the foam food container as it contains of cmemical substances that easily and quickly switch to food in hot conditions. Keywords : Styrofoam, heat resistant, obtainability, affordability.
