Abstract

Vocabulary is considered as the most essential part for students in English learning including those who are learning English for Tourism. The reason behind this is that nothing can be conveyed both in written or spoken language without vocabulary. Some researchers attempted to apply some strategies and approaches to assist the students in gaining vocabulary mastery. One of the ways is by using a corpus-based approach. However, to understand the corpus data need huge effort if the students have a lack of vocabulary due to the complexity of the language used. For that reason, the use of the online dictionary is required that eases the students to seek the meaning of unfamiliar words in the corpus. The researcher aims to know the students’ responses on integrating online corpus and dictionary to expand English vocabulary for tourism after conducting experimental research to the fourth semester of hospitality students in 8 meetings. In the treatments given, the researcher only focused on 100 words which were considered as unfamiliar words selected from articles in tourism fields. The questionnaires were distributed to recognize what they perceived after the integration of online corpus and the online dictionary. The result showed that the students responded positively to the use of the online dictionary while learning vocabulary through online corpus as the students could understand the corpus data presented better than without the use of online dictionary and they could broaden their vocabulary.

Abstract

Being a rich source of language and culture, literature has been an ideal tool for the study of a language. As literature offers a bountiful and extremely varied body of written material that deals with enduring human issues, it facilitates in enhancing students’ language proficiency as well as expanding their knowledge horizon. Accordingly, literature seems to provide answers for the question posed by the 4th UAD TEFL International Conference: how to teach English in order to boost students’ language proficiency while empowering them with knowledge, skills and attitude in endorsing sustainable development and promoting global awareness. In this article I will share my experience from my literature class at PSU, where I deal with the concerned question.  I use two main literary works, A Street Cat Named Bob (2012), a biography by James Bowen and The Kite Runner (2003), a novel by Khaled Hosseini, to teach my students about human values such as love, loyalty, courage and social justice. At the same time, I introduce them to the world’s current issues such as diaspora, immigration, war and the idea of multicultural society.

Abstract

English is one of compulsory subjects at the computer science department in a higher education. Since English is not a field of study at the computer science, it is taught as an ESP (English for Specific Purposes). The fact that English is part of the curriculum at the computer science department makes it challenging for both the teachers and the students. The majority of the students will always deal with motivation, whereas teachers face a great challenge in designing an appropriate instructional material that gives short-term and long-term effects to the students. Besides, there are two types of teachers who teach English for computer science students, English teachers who have English education background and English teachers who do not own degrees in English education. These two types of teachers experience their own strengths and weaknesses in designing English instructional materials. This research, therefore, will combine the strengths of the teachers in the development of English instructional materials for computer science students that will have short-term and long-term impacts to the students. This research is applying an action research which is divided into some cycles of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The participants are three English teachers and two classes of computer science students.

Abstract

Since language is dynamic, and teaching is a dynamic tool of instructing and training someone (the learner) for desired change in their lives, behaviors, experiences, and statuses, it also requires a dynamic and an experienced mind to carry it out. In its methodology, the study adopted both the primary and secondary sources of data gathering technique. Observational examination of both teachers and learners of the English language constituted the primary source while extant material dealing with the teaching and learning of English comprised the secondary data. The observation mainly bordered on phonetics and phonology, that is, how some Nigerian teachers of English realize or articulate some sounds and words of English, which in turn has impacted negatively on the learner. These sounds and words are divided into two groups – A and B, and group A is further divided into vowel and consonant sounds. We also presented the charts of the vowels and consonants of English to guide us in our analysis. The result of this investigation showed that mother tongue interference is the main factor responsible, and that teachers need to do extra work on themselves for satisfactory and positive learning outcomes on the learners, which is a direct consequence of effective teaching.
