Abstract

The polulation of Cat Family (Felidae) in Southeast Asia has declined in nature owing to its lost habitat, fragmentation one and massive hunting. Meanwhile, the research of Asiatic Golden Cats, Sunda Clouded  Leopards, Marbled Cats, and Asian Leopard Cats is not much conducted. This research aimed to find out their distribution and habitat use in Southern Bukit Barisan National Park (BBSNP). The data intake employed Camera Trap, then analyzed by occupancy model with single season and single species applying R-software. It was found that  Asiatic Golden Cat Occupancy Model yielded 0.75 in Intensive Protection Zone or Zona Perlindungan Intensive (IPZ) and 0.4 occupancy value in northen parts of  Sourthern Bukit Barisan National Park (BBSNP). Furthermore, its Sunda Clouded Leopards resulted in 0.50 in IPZ and 0.42 occupancy value in northen parts of BBSNP. Its Asian Leopard Cats was 0.16 occupancy value in IPZ  and unexecuted occupancy model in northen parts of BBSNP due to extremly low detection.

Abstract

According to previous observations, the distribution of habitat and population of slow lorises in Indonesia shows that slow lorises are found mostly in plantation habitats, agricultural land, and  community forests where the available feed supply is in the form of fruits, insects and small reptiles. Taman Buru Masigit Kareumbi is one of the areas that has a level of vulnerability to the illegal hunting of slow lorises outside the forest area that enters the community land area. One of the habitats for the Javan slow loris is the Masigit Kareumbi Hunting Park (TBMK). Observations in the study used the line transect method (line transect) combined with the spot lighting method and GPS mapping, with a sampling intensity of 1% in accordance with P.67 /Menhut-II / 2016 regarding criteria and forest inventory standards for sampling intensity. The survey was carried out by walking slowly at an average speed of 1 km / hour and systematically looking for and observing the presence of slow lorises on the forest floor, lower canopy, middle canopy and upper canopy. The existence of slow lorises in Taman Buru Masigit kareumbi is spread across utilization blocks in 3 locations,  namely Bagus,  Hadun, and Cimulu, and 5 Javan slow lorises were found directly in the field during the research.

Abstract

Dry forests in semi-arid region plays important roles in humans’ life, whether it is socially, economically, or ecologically. Most of the time, it is very difficult to maintain the equilibrium of those roles, especially in developing-country where the economic role is more exploited than the other roles. This mismanagement of forests would lead to the situation where the forest will be in rapid retreat. On the other hand, maintaining as well as increasing the forests is the most essential solution for climate change, as forests play integral part on carbon sequestration therefore stabilizing the climate. In carbon sequestration, plants incorporate carbon from atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) through photosynthesis then storing it in biomass and soil. As each vegetation has different capacity to store carbon, this study tries to estimate the absorption rate of carbon dioxide (CO2) and the potential carbon storage of Borneo camphor (Dryobalanops aromatica) and Kesambi (Schleichera oleosa) in Oebatu Dano Ina forest (RTK.24) Pantai Baru sub-district, Rote Ndao district, Nusa Tenggara Timur province. The result shows carbon storage range of 6.51–42.998 ton/ha for both vegetation with average of 0,135–1,791 ton/ha for each tree, while the average of carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption rate is 0,498–6,575 ton/ha for each tree.

Abstract

Kilemo (Litsea cubeba) is a forest plant that has high economic value such as essential oils which can be used as raw materials for various biopharmaceutical industries such as soap, perfume, medicines, and aromatherapy. This potential has not been developed by the surrounding community as a commodity for industrial raw materials due to public ignorance in cultivating, besides the difficulty of getting seeda from kilemo itself is another reason for residents to cultivate these plants. The object of research is to identify prospective of trees plus of kilemo. The selction of plus trees was carried out using a purposive sampling system by placing units using random start method and selecting the tree heigt and diameter according to the plus tree scoring table. There were 29 prospective trees plus of kilemo identified according to their phenotypic appearance with the following characteristics: the average total tree heigt was more than 10 m (20-36 m), the branch-free height was realtively low, and the largest diameter was 32 cm. In addition, it was also found to be fruiting and flowering at 72,41%, only 17,24% to bear fruit and 10,34% to flower.
