Abstract

This research aimed to find out the effectiveness of Teaching Indonesian-English Combined Task to improve students’ skills in writing English sentences. It was undertaken in PDF Ulya As’adiyah Putri Sengkang in Academic Year 2016/2017. It applied pre-experimental method. Writing test was employed as the instrument of the research. The population of this research was 16 students. The technique of data collection involved giving pre-test to know the writing skills gained previously of the students and post-test after giving the treatment to know how the skills of the students in writing English sentences by using Indonesian-English combined task. The result of the calculation of the students’ score indicated that the mean score of the students’ pre-test was (55.25) which was classified as fair classification and the mean score of the students’ post-test was (73,93) as good classification. The value of paired sample test for post-test was greater than the t-table. In short, teaching Indonesian-English combined task is effective to improve students’ skills in writing English sentences.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the ability to write an English analytical exposition text in class XI Religion 2 MAN 2 Polewali. Therefore, the main problem is how the students' ability to write analytical exposition texts in class XI Agama 2. This research is quantitative and descriptive. The population in this study were students of class XI Religion 2 MAN Polewali. This means that the population is 15 students, and this population is used as a sample of 15 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used a writing test. Students are asked to make an analytical exposition text. Analysis of student score data found that students' ability in writing analytical exposition texts was still lacking in class XI (15 students). In this case, in class XI, Religion 2, there were no students who got very good scores. Six students got the same student's work. The results of this study indicate that the ability to write analytical exposition texts is not capable with students' writing results below the average, and the researchers also found that students' writing results are considered impure because of the indications that students take them from the internet. This is indicated by the use of vocabulary used in addition to the results of interviews with the teacher. The researcher found that there was no guidance from the teacher to the students on how to write analytically. The teacher's exposition text only directs students to look for the structure of the analytical exposition text.

Abstract

This research aims to see the implementation of WhatsApp media in EFL Classroom. Researcher used qualitative descriptive data collection through observation to see the learning process that took place in WhatsApp group, then interviewed students and teacher, and finally documentation. Data analysis techniques in this research are data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. From the research results, it can be seen that the learning process is divided into three stages, namely: 1) Planning, 2) Implementation which is divided into three stages, namely: opening, core and closing activities and 3) evaluation. In this case, students can still participate in the learning process using WhatsApp group and easily accessible, save quota and also have various features that teacher can choose to use in the learning process such as WhatsApp groups, chat messages, document files, videos or photos. In addition, there are still obstacles that faced by teacher and students such as teacher cannot observe directly, learning is not optimal, poor internet network, full cellphone memory or lack of understanding of the material.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the using picture series in teaching writing skill for the fourth semester students of midwifery program in STIKES Bhakti Husada Mulia Madiun. This study was done on May 2020. The subjects were 32 students of the fourth semester students of midwifery program of STIKES Bhakti Husada Mulia Madiun in the academic year 2020/2021. The method used in this research was a qualitative descriptive research design. The techniques for collecting data were observation, interview, and documentation. During the research, the researcher acted as the teacher and observer during the implementation of picture series. The findings of observation show that there is good interaction between lecturer and students. The lecturer gives the task and assignment to make the students understand the material well. The finding of interview shows that by using picture series, the students can have the ideas how to start writing recount text well. They can arrange the picture series to help them in composing the writing. By using picture series the students can improve their writing based on the criteria asked by the lecturers. The criteria of the writing are vocabulary, content, language, mechanic and organization. The finding of documentation shows that the use of picture series in teaching writing recount text make the students interested. Thus, the learning process is supported that the students are better to write from their experiences to compose recount text. Then, the use of picture series is effectively used in helping students improve their performance in writing recount text. The future researcher can conduct the use of picture series in other skill of English such as on speaking skill. It is hoped can be used as the easy media to express the students’ creativity in their speaking. Furthermore, the researcher can do this study by using the other design such as the experimental research design in teaching English writing skill.

Abstract

The aims from this research are to know how is students’ skill in performing a speech, and to know the students’ deprivation in performing a speech. This research is mix method design to answer the problem of this thesis. The research took place at SMA N 6 Pinrang. The population was the students from eleventh grade, the sample of this research were 34 students who are from class XI MIPA 1 by used purposive sampling technique. The researcher used test and interview as instrument for this research. The speech performance used manuscript speech delivery method. The results of this research find that the students’ skill in performing speech are not fully fill up with the criteria of assessment, where the mean score from the performance is 189.79. Additionally, in analyzing the interview, the researchers conclude that there are some deprivations when the students perform their speech, the factors that been found over the interview were the use of English as a language used it selves in performing a speech. Moreover, the use of vocal variety and physical movement also mentioned with the students as their deprivation in performing a speech.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to analyze and describe the process of improving students’ listeningskill for eleventh grade students of MAN 1 Majene, West Sulawesi Province through watchingEnglish movies. The subject of this research is XI Agama 2 Class that consisted of 16 students. Themethod used in this study is Classroom Action Research (CAR) which the writer workscollaboratively with the English teacher. The results in this study indicate that there wasimprovement of the students’ skill listening. Most of the students gradually gained good scores at theend of the cycle. The data were collected from a questionnaire, observation note of performance,pre-test and post-test. The study was conducted with cycle model through the steps of planning,conducting, observation, and reflection. The results of this study show a significant relationshipbetween students' learning by English movie with delay subtitle related to their listening skills as shown in their improvement of post-test and positive responses of students than English moviewith not delay. The questionnaire shows that more than 75% students felt easy to understandlistening materials from native speakers. Consequently, it was suggested that teaching learningprocess using English movie with English subtitle is recommended into learning process toimprove students' listening skills in English language classroom. In conclusion, watching Englishmovie can improve students listening skill.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was positively to find out whether applying two stay two straytechniques by using picture series to improve students’ speaking skill at the second grade in MAN 2Parepare. The results of this research give contribution for both the teachers and students. Theteacher will be conscious that it is important to apply the technique in teaching. The students canenjoy the lesson so they can be easier to express their ideas and also confidence to speak by usingthe gesture. The subject of this research is XI MIA 1 class which is consisted of 27 students. Thesample was taken by using purposive sampling. The design in this research was pre-experimental with pre-test and post-test design. The student did the pre-test, got the treatment and did the posttest. It aimed to know whether applying two stay two stray techniques by using picture series canimprove students’ speaking skill. The result in this research was indicated that the improvement of thestudents’ speaking skill. It was indicated by the students’ mean score of post-test (72.26) was greaterthan pre-test (44.46). Even, for the level significant (p) 5% and df = 26, and the value of table is1.706, while the value of t-test is 18.34. It means that the t-test value is greater than t-table). Thus, it can be concluded that the students’ speaking skill is significantly better after gettingthe treatment. So, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.

Abstract

This research was designed to improve the students` reading comprehension through Think TalkWrite at the first-grade students of SMKN 1 Lasusua. The research problem was “The readingcomprehension of the first- grade students of SMKN 1 Lasusua is low”. The design of this researchwas collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR).In this research, there were two cycles. Thefirst cycle was not success because the result of the students’ test did not fulfill the KKM, so therewas the next cycle. The second cycle was success because the result of the student test achieved the KKM mandatory by the school. In addition, this research must get score of 70 to fulfill theMinimum Mastery Criterion – Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (KKM). It could be seen in the averagescore, it was 68.6 in the first cycle, and there were only 17 students from 35 students got greater score than or equal 70. This score increased to be 74.77 in the second cycle, there were 26 from 35students got score greater than or equal 70. It means that this research was successful. Based onthe findings, the conclusion is Think Talk Write strategy could improve the students` comprehensionin reading at the first-grade students of SMKN 1 Lasusua

Abstract

This research studied about the kinds of propaganda expressions and what messages are conveyedthrough the propaganda expressions in Angel and Demon novel by Dan Brown. The research usedthe propaganda theory by Harold Laswell, that divided in four kinds; agitation, integration, horizontally and vertically propaganda. In the methodology of research, the writer used descriptive qualitativemethod and intrinsic and extrinsic approach. In this research, the writer found there are someexpressions that contain agitation propaganda, integration propaganda, horizontally propaganda andvertically propaganda that could be giving influence to the reader. In general, an expression ofpropaganda in “Angel and Demon” novel by Dan Brown wants to change the mindset of peopletowards their views to the brotherhood of the „Illuminati. The novel attempts to explain the history ofthe birth of a conflict between the Christian and the „Illuminati‟ and how much influence they hadbeen, the author packed them into a dialogue delivered by characters that are in the novel in whichthere are propaganda expressions. The implication of this research as a information to the public thata novel is not only use full as a reading at leisure or entertainment, but the novel can also be functioning as media of propaganda

Abstract

This research aimed to know by using Card Sort can improve students’ vocabulary at students ofMTsN Parepare. Generally the use of media as teaching aid mainly aimed at increasing the teachingprocess to be more motivating and interesting. This research was conducted in MTsN Parepare.Researcher used quantitative study in the form of Pre – Experimental design with one group pre-testand post-test. There are independent variable and dependent variable. Random sampling is thetechnique to take the sample and VIII.5 is the samples which consist with 26 students. Theinstrument that used is test, observation and documentation. The result calculation of mean scorepre-test of students was 52.31 and mean score post- test of students was 65.57. The result of thisresearch showed there was significant different in statistical analysis where the statistical t-test (2.7)was higher than t-table (1,708) with degree freedom (df = N-1) 25. The researcher concluded the using of Card Sort is able to improve students’ vocabulary. From 15 questionnaires, thestudents answered very positive. Based on the Likert scale, the students were very positive inlearning English by using Card Sort. It means that the Card Sort media makes students have positiveresponse toward in learning vocabulary. The cumulative percentage on the fifteen items of the positive statements questionnaire was 96,62, while the cumulative score that they got from thequestionnaire was 1633. The researcher concluded the using of Card Sort is able to improve students’vocabulary at MTsN Parepare.
