Abstract

This research is aimed to find out whether or not English Learning Speech Assistant ((ELSA) Speak), a smartphone application can be used as a teaching media to improve the pronunciation ability of students of SMP Katolik St. Johanis Laikit pronunciation ability. This research using quantitative approach through the experimental method by used Pretest-Posttest Design. The sample taken from the students of 8th grade at SMP Katolik St. Johanis Laikit that consist of 20 students. The instrument tests that used in this research to collect the data are oral tests by giving 20 questions to the students on the pre-test and the 15 same questions that are valid on the post-test. Based on the result, in the pre-test one student got the highest score that is 8 and three students got the lowest score that is 2, in the post-test five students got the highest score that is 10 and one students got the lowest score that is 5. The mean score on the pre-test is 4.6 and the mean score on the post-test is 7.9. From all the results the researcher concluded that the use of appropriate teaching media can affect students’ learning outcomes that is alsocan be concluded that students’ pronunciation ability has significantly improved after using the teaching media.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out students' perceptions on the use of movie for vocabulary mastery. In this research, the researcher used questionnaires. The research method utilized by the researcher was quantitative research, and the data that have been collected were presented as numbers and total using a percentage formula. The 240 students in the 12th grade at SMA Kristen 1 Tomohon made up the population of this study. Thirty two students who responded to the questionnaire were used as the sample by the researcher. According to the study's findings, the sample of students had a lot of experience watching movies, and their responses to the questions preferred to be positive. The utilization of the movie was concluded to have been advantageous and successful for SMA Kristen 1 Tomohon students in the 12th grade. It was advised that English teachers always use a creative approach similar to what has been done before, follow technological advancements, improve what needs to be improved, and gain from every consequence in terms of results.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out how the id, ego and superego of the main character in the movie script Cruella by Tony McNamara and Dana Fox. In this research, the writer used qualitative research and descriptive method, a research method that used non-numerical data to explain a phenomenon accurately. In analyzing this research, the writer used psychological approach, to be exact psychoanalysis theory of id, ego and superego by Sigmund Freud. The writer analyzed the data found in the movie, script, books, journals, articles and websites by several watches of the movie and taking notes on some important parts of the movie script, then applied the theory of psychoanalysis. Based on the results of this study, it was found that the id of Estella, the main character of the movie Cruella is portrayed through her eccentric and quite barbaric thoughts of revenge. The ego is portrayed through how she somehow managed her revenge thoughts into a more realistic ways. And the superego is portrayed through her guilty thought and realization of her true self. It can be concluded that Estella, who also has an alter-ego as Cruella has id as her leading thought, ego that quite often leading her psyche and superego that is the least dominant thought of Estella.

Abstract

The background of this research was based on students’ difficulties in differentiating meaning and spelling of the words with homophone pair, which means their understanding of homophone were less. This research is intend to see whether Crossword Puzzle Game is effective or not in improving the students’ ability of understanding homophone. In other words, this research was to find out how much the improvement of students’ understanding after being taught using Crossword Puzzle Game. For that reason a strategy must be given to make them learn easily. In this research, Crossword Puzzle Game was used to help students understand homophone words. This study was focused on writing skill, especially on spelling, at the 7th grade of SMP Negeri 5 Manado, specifically class 7.7, in the academic year of 2021/2022. This research discuss about the use of Crossword Puzzle Game to improve students’ understanding of homophone. The implementation of Crossword Puzzle Game in teaching homophone was conducted with pre-test and post-test. The participant of the pre-test was 22 students where the average of students’ score was 63.77, while the participant of post-test was 21 students where the average of students’ score was 81.52. By those results, the increase percentage was calculated and the result showed that the students’ of 7.7 in SMP Negeri 5 Manado, in the academic year of 2021/2022 made an improvement score about 30.70%. From the description above, the conclusion of this study was the use of Crossword Puzzle Game could improve students’ understanding of homophone.

Abstract

A short story is a story that is written shorter than a novel and longer than a fable. Short stories focus on larger or smaller issues and focus on building strong feelings from the readers. A short story tells about one aspect of a character's life. This aspect of life can be an event, a picture of a feeling, or a simple action in the life of a character. Short stories can also influence or even inspire readers. Because it is no longer a taboo if short stories are widely used in the English learning process. One of the important aspects in learning English is Vocabulary. Teaching this aspect is neither easy nor difficult. There are many things that teachers can use to improve vocabulary, because vocabulary in the learning process needs to use appropriate techniques/methods, one of which can use short stories. Therefore, this study wanted to find out how the effect of short stories on increasing students' vocabulary. In the process, this research uses a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design. In this design, the model is one group pre-test and post-test. 20 students of class VIII A were taken as samples in this study, to calculate the results of the student test, the researcher used the mean score formula to analyze the data. As the results, the short story in the form of a storyline has a lot of vocabulary, so that the students' vocabulary is increasing, this is proven by the significant difference between the students' pre-test and post-test.A short story is a story that is written shorter than a novel and longer than a fable. Abstract

Reading comprehension is the ability to process text, understand the meaning of the text and not what the reader knows. The ability of individuals to understand texts is influenced by their skills and their ability to process information. Seeing the importance of reading comprehension in the process of learning English from students, the researcher wanted to see how to use suggestopedia to improve students' reading comprehension. As is well known, suggestopedia is a learning method that aims to make students feel relaxed and relieve tension in learning. In this study, the researcher used a quantitative method by applying a one group pre-test and post-test design. The subjects in this study were students from Berea Tondano Junior High School in class VIII with a total of 20 students as a sample. In measuring the extent to which suggestopedia affects students' reading comprehension, the researcher uses a test that is given at the beginning and at the end of the treatment. As a finding, suggestopedia has a very positive effect on students' reading comprehension, which can be seen from the increase in students' scores from pre-test to post-test. In addition, suggestopedia has the following effects: (1) gives peace and relaxation; (2) pleasant or exhilarating; (3) accelerate the learning process; (4) emphasizes the development of language skills.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to test whether the use of collaborative comprehensive reading comprehension was effective in improving the reading comprehension of review texts for junior high school students. It was intended to provide reliable information about whether there was a difference in students' reading comprehension between the pretest and posttest. Data was collected through pre-treatment pre-test and post-treatment post-test on one of the seventh grade students of SMP GPDI BEREA TONDANO for the academic year 2021/2022. According to the survey data, the pre-test had a minimum score of 5 and a maximum score of 60.5. In the post hoc test, the lowest percentage was 20 and the highest percentage was 92. The results showed that the posttest average was 55.9 higher than the pretest average was 23.05. Based on these results, it can be concluded that Cooperative Integrated Reading Composition (CIRC) reading text learning was effective in improving the reading comprehension of 7th graders in recalculated texts.

Abstract

This study was conducted in the purpose to find out whether the use of English song can improve students’ vocabulary or not. This study was delimited on the teaching vocabulary particularly verb using English song to SMP Katolik Gonzaga Tomohon, especially second grade students in ongoing semester academic year of 2021/2022. More specifically, five songs entitled included in Disney Soundtracks were only used in this study considering the song difficulty and students’ level. Those are I See the Light, Reflection, A Whole New World, Let it Go, and Beauty and the Beast.  The research design is pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test.  The second grade students of SMP Katolik Gonzaga Tomohon in the academic year 2021-2022 were the subjects of this study. The class consists of 31 students. The writer used multiple-choice test with pre-test, giving treatment with English song implementation and giving post-test in another multiple choice test. The data analysis shows that (a) the mean of the post-test 7.25 and the the mean of pre-test is 6.58, and (b) the standard deviation of the pre-test data is 0.87 whereas the post-test data is 0.79. These results of data analysis indicate that the students’ vocabulary mastery increases after being used English song as treatment. It means that the use of English song is effective in improving the students’ vocabulary mastery. The finding states that English song use is effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. Therefore, English teachers are suggested to take the use of English song into consideration as a useful alternative for teaching verb vocabulary.
