Abstract

Introduction: Patient safety is an important element that must be noted when providing care to patients, including by the nurse. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of cleaning periurethral with povidone iodine 10 %, povidone iodine 2% and normal saline against bacteria colonization before catheterization. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental pre- and post-intervention design with a control group.  Periurethral swabs were obtained from a total of 60 patients (povidone iodine 10 % as a control group, 20;  povidone iodine 2%, 20; normal saline, 20).  Results: Through a paired t-test, it can be seen that there was a significant decrease (p-value: 0.00; p < 0.05) in the bacteria colonization count using povidone iodine 2% and normal saline. When using povidone iodine 10%  , there was no significant decrease (p-value: 0.55; p >.05) in the bacterial colonization count. Discussion: Povidone-iodine 2% is the most effective solution for us to reduce bacterial colonization in the periurethral area rather than another solution. The recommendation is to test for bacteria colonization in the urine culture using the different periurethral cleaning solutions.

Abstract

Introduction: The learning process at the university level, especially in nursing, has changed since the number of cases of COVID-19 has continued to increase. Various problems after one year of the pandemic include students complained of boredom and lack of focus on learning compared to conventional learning in the classroom. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of discovery learning method on students’ self-motivation through online learning in the COVID-19 pandemic.Method: This study used a quasi-experimental with pre-post control group design and conducted in two areas, PSIK Sam Ratulangi University as an Intervention group and PSIK Stikes Jendral Achmad Yani Cimahi as control group. We recruited a total sample of 82 respondents in total. This study lasted for four weeks with six stages described as two t meetings a week. To measure students' self-motivation, the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) instrument totaling 32 items was used. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon test and Mann Whitney test. Results: The results of this study indicate that there is a significant effect of discovery learning methods with self-motivation in online learning in community nursing course [p=0.00; Z = -2.28] and emergency nursing course [p=0.00; Z = -3.43].Conclusions: The results of the study are promising as the course can have a direct effect on the nursing education system, especially in improving the quality of learning methods. This method may be used as a way to improve student skill in the nursing courses especially community nursing and emergency nursing.

A descriptive crosssectional study was performed by using VARK questionnaire version 7.8. A total of 241 students including 125 nursing and 116 midwifery students were participated in this study that selected using stratifi ed random sampling techniques. Data analysis used Chi square test and One Way ANOVA (α=0.05). Result. Abstract

Introduction: Millennial nurses are beginning to accept leadership roles and will soon take over governance in the nursing profession and healthcare industry. This study aimed to describe the perspectives on leadership and their practice environment of millennial nurse administrators working in tertiary hospitals in Iloilo City, Philippines. Methods: Eight (8) millennial nurse administrators were purposively chosen. Through a qualitative descriptive inquiry by Sandelowski (2000), data were gathered using semi-structured interviews and analyzed employing qualitative content analysis. Results: Twelve (12) meaningful categories were derived directly from the interview transcripts. Millennial nurse administrators perceive leadership by way of (1) directing, (2) guiding, (3) empowering and (4) modeling to staff. They viewed their practice environment as (5) having a harmonious relationship while (6) maintaining professional relationship among the healthcare team members, (7) upholding standards and (8) ensuring client satisfaction as a measure of quality care. Millennial nurse administrators shared feelings of being (9) overwhelmed at the start yet (10) fulfilling in the end. Lastly, they had challenges in (11) dealing with older staff and in (12) assuming the full responsibility and accountability of their unit. Conclusions: Considering the complexities in the healthcare profession, millennial nurse administrators cope with the responsibilities brought by their position as major key players to ensure that unit operations abide with practice standards. Millennial nurse administrators must be provided with understanding, support, and mentoring, to enhance their leadership competencies as they progress into higher leadership positions.

Abstract

Introduction. Improving the quality of education makes a shift in educational paradigm in Indonesia. Conventional teacher-centered curricula is changing to competency-based curricula (CBC) with focus on student-centered learning. The purpose of this study was to identify relationship between the implementation of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method in CBC with students’ soft skills. Method. The study design was cross sectional correlation with 97 respondents as the sample. Analysis of the data using univariate and bivariate analysis with the test used was the chi square test. Results. The results of the study showed that there was no relationship in the implementation of PBL method in CBC with students’ soft skills (ρ = 0.646). Discussion. Based on the results, this study suggested to the academic head officer of PSIK UR to be able to evaluate periodically the implementation of CBC in order to achieve quality learning to produce students who can perform both hard skills and soft skills. Abstract

Introduction: Temperature, humidity, and noise are factors that affect sleep quality. The objective of the research is to determine the effect of humidity, temperature, and room noise on sleep quality of (Intensive Care Unit) ICU patients. Methods: A quantitative research with the cross-sectional approach, involving 84 patients taken by consecutive sampling, with the inclusion criteria of at least having already spent more than two days in ICU, having age between 20-70 years, and being conscious and cooperative. The patients were observed using observation sheets and The Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire (RCSQ). A thermohygrometer and sound level meter for noise recording were used to measure the temperature and humidity. Simple linear regression was used to analyze the data. Results: It was found out that the average sleep quality of patients in the intensive room was 28.51, which categorized as poor sleep quality; the mean humidity in ICU was 56.98; the room temperature was 26.40, and the noise was 66.01. The noise level at the ICU significantly affected the patients’ sleep quality (p-value = 0.020 <0.05), while temperature and humidity did not influence the patients' sleep quality. Conclusion: Most of the respondents had a poor quality of sleep. Controlling the conversation and activities among staff, using earplugs, and modifying the alarm can be done to reduce the noise at the ICU to enhance the quality of sleep of the patients.
