Abstract

Coastal areas and small island communities in the Wakatobi archipelago carry out traditional agriculture. Farming is held with a rainfed system on dry land and a dry climate. This system theoretically has non-optimal productivity. Even so, farmers still farm because extrinsic motivation influences how they manage farming land. The productivity of their farms is relatively able to meet the needs of farmers. This study aims to determine extrinsically motivations attached to the traditional agricultural systems of the Binongko community in the Wakatobi Islands. The research lasted eight months, from June 2019 to February 2020. The research data was collected with the triangulation method by observation, interviews, and literature study. The research informants were determined purposively with a chain information collection system. The data were analysed qualitatively using a phenomenological approach. Based on the results of this study, it is known that the Binongko Island community has an extrinsic motivation attached to traditional farming systems, namely, to obtain agricultural products economically, socially, and ecologically. In addition, farmers are also extrinsically motivated by the support from the government. These local wisdom techniques are implemented starting from land preparation and clearing, planting, maintenance, harvesting and post-harvesting.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to highlight how turmeric farmers lived and to analyze all the problems they faced. Not only that, but we also tried to give alternative solutions that could help them grow. The research started in September 2021 when the pandemic was happening. This research was conducted using a qualitative and case study approach. Primary data sources, such as interviews and observations with turmeric farmers in Kajuanak village, and secondary data sources, such as a literature review, were used in this research. The result showed that they never got any help from stakeholders for all of this time. Besides that, they still use traditional methods and have a low sales rate. Based on these findings, we found some alternative solutions that could positively impact the growth of turmeric farmers. There is a synchronization of mission and vision, technology utilization training, how to use e-commerce courses, and providing funds and investment.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze cassava partnerships in Lampung Province, analyze how partnerships can work effectively in terms of institutions and management, and analyze the cassava farmer partnership engineering models in Lampung. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with an in-depth interview method. The research locations were in Gunung Agung Village, Central Lampung Regency, and Labuhan Ratu Village, East Lampung, considering that they were the largest cassava centres in Lampung. The research was conducted in July 2019. The research data consisted of primary and secondary data with a total sample of 126 cassava farmers. The data were analyzed descriptive-qualitatively, namely the performance of several alternative institutional partnerships for cassava agribusinesses that are compatible with the characteristics of the participants and the commodities produced. The results show that a good partnership includes arrangements within the jurisdictional limits of the cassava agribusiness system, which is determined by the operating capacity per unit of tapioca mill that is permitted in a clear and firm zone, assistance by the third party to build a sense of togetherness between farmers and entrepreneurs also to induce loyalty, commitment, and integrity. The partnership engineering of cassava agribusinesses that is expected to be effective is a partnership built jointly by farmers (Farmers' groups and Gapoktan) and tapioca industry entrepreneurs mediated by a third party (Local Government or Universities or other agencies).

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the characteristics and determinants of rural part-time workers in Southeast Sulawesi Province. This study focuses on the socio-demographic attribute that can influence a person to become a part-time worker. Part-time workers are part of non-full workers, which is considered not a problem. Part-time workers are absorbed in less decent jobs. Young age groups dominate them because they are less experienced in the complexities of job search, less intense in wage negotiations, less financially secure, and more vulnerable to psychological stress. Part-time workers are those who work below standard hours but are not looking for work and are not available for work. This study uses secondary data from the August 2021 National Labor Force Survey (Sakernas). Samples used in this study were 3,540 part-time workers spread throughout Southeast Sulawesi Province. Two thousand eight hundred six part-time workers are in rural areas, and 734 are in urban areas. In this study, the dependent variable is part-time workers. While the variables of age, gender, position in the household, marital status, education level, and field of business are independent. The analytical method used in this study is binary logistic regression. This study shows the characteristics of rural part-time workers are dominated by those of the primary working age, female, ordinary household members, married, low education, and working in the agricultural sector. Based on the determinants, part-time workers are more likely to occur in those of young working age, have ever-married status, those with middle and low education, and work in the agricultural sector. Efforts are needed to reduce part-time workers to improve their welfare.

Abstract

Indonesia ranks fifth for the world’s most significant ginger production in 2020 after India, Nigeria, China, and Nepal. However, this does not make Indonesia a major ginger exporter in the international market. This study analyzes the position of Indonesian ginger in the global market compared to its competitors based on comparative advantage, competitive advantage, and trade specialization. The research methods used Revealed Comparative Trade Advantage (RTCA), Export Competitiveness Index (XCi), and Trade Specialization Index (ISP). The data used in this study is secondary data for the period 2006-2020 obtained from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) with item code 720 (ginger), which consist of the export and import value of ginger from the country concerned, the export and import value of world ginger, and also the export and import value of all goods from the country affected. The result showed that the Indonesian ginger commodity has comparative competitiveness, competitive competitiveness, and trade specialization as an exporter of ginger in the international market. RCTA analysis shows an average value of 0,538, making Indonesia the country with the lowest comparative competitiveness among other competitors. XCi analysis indicates that Indonesia has the highest competitive competitiveness compared to its competitors, with an average value of 1,351. ISP analysis shows that Indonesia tends to be an exporter of ginger with an average value of 0,29 and is in the growth stage. Indonesia has the potential to develop the competitiveness of ginger exports in the international market by optimizing the utilization of existing resources and improving the quality of ginger. The competition for ginger exports in the global market is currently very tight, so for further research, it is recommended to analyze non-traditional markets that can be used as a potential to develop the Indonesian ginger export market.

Abstract

One of the priority watersheds in Southeast Sulawesi is the Poleang watershed. It is necessary to assess management performance to remain sustainable in its implementation. This research aims to determine the performance of poleang watershed management based on indicators of land conditions and determine recommendations for the direction of sustainable land management policies. The survey methods used in the research and analysis include land criticality, land cover and erosion in calculating carrying capacity. This research resulted in the fact that the land support in the Polean g watershed had a high class with a score of 1.25 based on the critical land sub-criteria. Sub-land cover criteria have an excellent category with a score of 0.5, and the erosion index sub-criterion has a very high category with a score of 1.5. Overall, the carrying capacity of the Poleang watershed is in the moderate category, so it is necessary to maintain land or increase the area of vegetation cover of the Poleang watershed through the application of vegetation conservation methods, technical conservation methods and mechanical conservation methods.
