Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze the relationship between economic growth, which uses per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and environmental degradation, which uses metric/ton carbon emission. This study was conducted in high-income southeast Asian countries incorporating 1998-2018 time-series data. Here investment represented by Foreign Direct Investment, population growth, and industrial growth were also used as the independent variables. The use of panel data regression with the fixed effect model has led to evidence that EKC, based on the inverted-U curve between economic growth and industrial growth positively affects environmental degradation and that population growth and investment negatively influence environmental degradation as explained by the increase in carbon emission.

Abstract

The demographic bonus period currently entered by Indonesia will be great opportunity should the country is able to take advantage from the abundance of productive population. However, the period also leads to the aging population trend, where the number of older population is high. In Tabanan regency, the involvement of elderly females in public sector increases every year. One of the driver for them to remain active at work is culture. The purpose of this study is to analyze the role of elderly female sellers in Tabanan traditional market in increasing the economy of their family. This qualitative research uses the ethnographic approach related with the perspective of culture. The data was acquired through unstructured interviews and direct observations. This research finds that elderly female sellers in Tabanan traditional market plays an instrumental role in maintaining and increasing their family’s economy. Even though they are involved in public sector activities, they do not leave their obligations in domestic sector and duties as Hindus. This research implies the necessity of old age insurance in informal sector, inclusive formal education improvement in all remote areas, and non-profit organizations engaged in woman empowerment in order to create awareness about the importance of gender equality.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed how people consume goods and services. In Malang city the outbreak has made numerous changes in supply, demand, and people’s purchasing power, which eventually modify the citizens’ consumption pattern. The objective of this research is to identify the effects of income, price of basic needs, shopping habit, and health awareness on the consumption pattern of Malang people during the Covid-19 pandemic. The data of this quantitative research was harvested from questionnaires distributed to 100 samples. Here the non-parametric statistical analysis, i.e. Spearman’s rank correlation test, was used the relationship between independent and dependent variables. This study finds that all independent variables have positive and significant effects on consumption pattern. Based on the magnitude of relationship between variables, income very strongly influences consumption pattern, while price of basic needs, utilitarian shopping habit, and health awareness strongly affect the consumption pattern, and hedonic shopping habit weakly influences the consumption pattern. The implications of this research are the occurrence of income increase and well-planned purchases according to priority scales. Higher income and better expenditure planning can make people readier to face future economic shock.

Abstract

Provinces on the island of Java contribute greatly to national economic growth. However, this is not enough to be an indicator of development. Economic growth not only generates positive externalities but also generates waste. Other socio-economic characteristics also play a role in variations in the amount of waste generation, so it is important to study it for sustainable development planning. This study aims to analyze the effect of economic growth proxied by per-capita GRDP on waste generation on the island of Java in 2010-2019 and test its suitability with the Environmental Kuznet Curve (EKC) hypothesis. This study also analyzes the influence of other variables such as population density, education level and the government's role in spending on environmental management in Java. The analysis technique used is panel data regression using data from 6 provinces in Java during the 2010-2019 period. By using two model specifications, the results of the study show that the effect of economic growth on waste generation has not fully formed the EKC curve, but rather has a positive slope. The population density variable shows a positive and significant effect on waste generation. While the level of education and environmental spending have a negative effect on waste generation, it is not significant for BLH. The results of this study can support policy implications in encouraging new strategies to reduce waste generation and integrate environmental management.

Abstract

The degradation in economic growth in Bengkulu Province was in line with a low growth from the industrial sector. The growth of the Bengkulu Province industrial sector has experienced a significant decline every year. This decrease is called the condition of deindustrialization in Bengkulu Province. Therefore, this study aims to see how big the government's role is in increasing investment efficiency and the impact of investment efficiency in accelerating industrial growth in 9 (nine) urban districts in Bengkulu Province from 2016-2019. The study was conducted using the three-stage least square (3SLS) simultaneous method with panel data. The results of the study show that investment efficiency has no effect on the acceleration of industrialization growth in Bengkulu Province. This indicates that industrial growth in Bengkulu Province has not yet reached economies of scale. This study also shows the results that the education index needs to be the main focus to increase efficiency. So that it is expected to be able to pay more attention to the education index in order to reduce investment efficiency in accelerating the growth of industrial governments.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the factors that influence energy intensity in Indonesia. The method used is quantitative by using Vector Autoregressive (VAR) or Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) analysis to analyze the effect of economic variables on energy intensity. The data used is in the form of time series data, data obtained from the World Bank (2021), the Energy Information Administration (EIA) and the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS). The data observed in 1981-2021 is 40 years. The results of this study are per capita income and openness trade have a negative effect both long term and short term on energy intensity. Meanwhile, energy prices, population density, and foreign direct investment have positive long-term and short-term effects on energy intensity. the role of renewable technology and alternative energy is the biggest influence in reducing energy intensity figures in supporting economic development and a sustainable economy. With a targeted reduction of 1% in energy intensity figures every year. It is hoped that this research will help the Indonesian government in making decisions and making policies so that it can contribute to reducing energy intensity in Indonesia.

Abstract

Economic growth is an indicator of a country’s economic activity. It can also be used to analyze the country’s economic development. However, in reality, Indonesia’s economic growth is still slower than its four ASEAN peer countries, i.e. Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines. In terms of internet usage, those countries also have a far higher percentage of internet users. Using the simultaneous model with Two-Stage Least Squares (2SLS), this research attempts to estimate the impact of information and communication technology development on Indonesia’s economic growth and to analyze factors affecting the development of information and communication technology in the country. This research uses the 2012, 2015, and 2019 data of Statistics Indonesia, as well as the 2012-2020 interval data of the same source. This study finds that the development of information and communication technology significantly affects Indonesia’s economic growth and that factors affecting the development of information and communication technology in Indonesia are education index and export. Based on the findings above, the government and related parties are suggested to boost educational equity and intensify international trade that can enhance the use of technology in Indonesia.
