Abstract

Di sisi lain, untuk Generasi Y, kegunaan yang dirasakan memiliki pengaruh paling signifikan terhadap niat pembelian mereka. e-commerce in Indonesia is facing low conversion, which puts the sustainability of the business in jeopardy. It is crucial for e-commerce to increase the conversion rate. However, the strategy employed to improve the conversion rate may not achieve a significant result if it is not formulated based on a comprehensive understanding of the target market. This research analyzes the influence of perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and subjective norms on purchase intention of Generation X and Y, two potential market segments for e-commerce. The respondents that filled out the questionnaire were 100, which were equally composed of the two generations. In conducting this research, the researcher employed multiple regression analysis. The findings revealed that regardless the generation, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and subjective norms have positive and significant influence on purchase intention, with subjective norms having the strongest influence compared to other variables. However, when the responses of Generation X and Y were calculated separately, the findings showed different patterns of result. For Generation X, the variable with most significant influence on e-commerce purchase intention is perceived ease of use followed by subjective norms, while perceived usefulness has insignificant influence. On the other hand, for Generation Y, perceived usefulness has the most significant influence on their purchase intention

Abstract

The meaning of “citizen” in the concept “citizen journalism” continues to be discussed by scholars in the field. The discussion centres on the skills and capitals that are required if one aspires to be an ideal citizen journalist. Citizen journalists have long faced prejudices for lacking the knowledge in journalism and quality in their news content. Regardless, citizen journalism in Indonesia has flourished, largely due to the rapid growth of smartphone and social media users. This study uses the case of the NET Citizen Journalist (NET CJ) program, which as Indonesia’s largest community for citizen journalists. By mapping the NET CJ program’s members’ profiles based on their geographic, psychographic, demographic, and behavioural backgrounds, this study aims to pinpoint certain socio-economic backgrounds that might motivate the program’s members to participate. Moreover, a better understanding of the members’ background may produce more effective strategies to identify and educate potential citizen journalists. This study concludes that NET CJ program’s members possess traits that can be found in other highly informed citizens as well. Their potential to become a bona fide citizen journalist is considerable, and if fully unlocked, may accelerate the development of news democracy in Indonesia.

Abstract

This research looks at social movement by using framing perspective. Two theories are used, namely framing theory and social movement theory. This research uses the case study method, i.e.: instrumental case study. The cases analyzed in this study are 10 important cases pertaining to the dispute between the Corruption eradication Commission (KPK) and the National Police (Polri) between 2009 and 2012. data is collected through observation, in-depth interviews, documents review, and text analysis. This study shows that there is no special effort from pro-KPK movements’ actors (i.e.: the public relations of KPK) to approach or influence the media in order to have their version of news circulated more in the media. This findings proves that the success of social movements in the KPK-Polri disputes, where the news reports in the media predominantly support the KPK, is not due to the success of social movement actors in approaching the media, but rather because of the congruence of values between the journalists and social movement actors. Results of this study have implications for theories on the relationship between frames, media and social movements. The researcher proposes a model to portray the connection between the actors of social movements, media/journalists, media framing, and audience framing. This model is a development of the model proposed by Gamson, Scheufele, Benford, and Snow.

Abstract

The Tunggu Tubang women paradoxically hold both a respectable as well as subordinate position in the Semende community. They work to preserve the culture and perform their duties, yet at the same time they have to face various problems in the public sphere. The research question herein is how this position is socially constructed, and the theory applied to answer the question is that of the construction of social reality. The method chosen is that of the qualitative research, coupled with the critical constructionism paradigm and criterion sampling technique. The activities of the women in this study were observed in a period of two weeks, and two key informants with different jobs, social classes, and places of residence were interviewed. This study indicates that a gender-biased construction has been produced and reproduced through propagation of such belief since childhood and dominance of the Merajes in social realms. In addition, Tunggu Tubang women perceive their position and role as their destiny and a cultural identity which they have to assume. Such perspectives, however, are not as pervasive among informants living in more advanced areas as their lifestyle is more economy-oriented and practical

Abstract

Contemporary political communication is heavily coloured by post-truth and populism phenomena. The 2016 US Presidential Election and Brexit Referendum in the United Kingdom showed their implications. In Indonesia, those phenomena were believed to play significant roles in the 2017 DKI Jakarta Gubernatorial Election. This qualitative research tries to explore another local election in Indonesia, i.e. in North Sumatera, the biggest province outside Java. Specifically, this research tries to examine how the five lines of inquiry related to post-Truth and populism (categorized among others by Waisbord, 2018) take place in Sumatera Utara’s local elections. This research constitutes the first application of Waisbord’s lines of inquiry in Indonesia, as well as at the local election level. It finds that all five lines inquiry exist in the North Sumatera’s local elections. In addition, it also shows which line of inquiry becomes dominant or occurss earlier than others. Even most interviewees think that this dominant factor is now a kind of obligation and is ubiquitous in elections.

Abstract

This article would like to unveil avatar interactions under the attention economy framework in online video streaming applications, taking YouTube as example, and how it benefits content creators to monetize their channels’ contents. The theory of attention economy is proposed to explain how these avatar interactions in video streaming applications are perceived as a mode of transaction by using attention as universal currency. This article is elaborated using the social information processing theory to identify content creators’ avatar credibility through the application of cues during computer-mediated communication. To enrich the concept of credibility and methodology, the prominence-interpretation theory is also proposed. The method applied to this study is qualitative content analysis by examining five monetized Indonesian YouTube channels. In coding stage, several elements of the channels were identified, such as channel age, number of followers, and number of videos. Then from each channel, the video with the biggest number of views was picked and the types of advertisement showing up in such videos were examined. The observation found that five biggest YouTube channels in Indonesia in terms of number of subscribers had monetized their videos. Their videos had either overlay or non-stoppable video ad content during playback. This showed that number of views and engagements were generated from interactions between the content creators’ and visitors’ avatars. Attention metrics served as metrics in the attention economy framework, which in turn contribute to monetization — making it possible to see that YouTube channels were standardized to meet advertisers’ requirements.
