Abstract

The majority of Indonesians who are known to use social media as a means of communication and entertainment are certainly familiar with the term meme. A meme phenomenon popular is the use of the word 'tenggelamkan' at the end of the discourse popularized by Susi Pudjiastuti, the former minister of fisheries and maritime affairs. The objectives of this study are as follows: (1) to determine the language style used in memes that use the word ‘tenggelamkan’ and (2) to determine the implicature of memes using the word ‘tenggelamkan’. The data source of this research is taken from various pictures on the internet, amounting to 15 memes. The data collection used is the method capture. The research method is descriptive qualitative, the analysis used is Grice's theory of conversational maxims. The results of this study indicate the themes used in memes using the word ‘tenggelamkan’ include the themes of love, friendship, corruption, worship, and food. The use of language styles that are reflected, such as 9 memes of cynicism, 5 memes of paradox, and 1 meme of rhetoric. The implicatures of meme data using the word ‘tenggelamkan’ are as follows: satire, suggestion, satire and suggestion.

Abstract

Indonesian EFL Learners experience erroneous speech in the process of learning the target language. Interlanguage, the errors that contain linguistic features which neither belong to the first language (L1) nor the target language becomes the focus of this study. The study aims to analyze the native and target language influence on the interlanguage produced by the students in their speech production. This study was designed in qualitative research approach. The data was collected through interviewed of 20 eighth grade students in English using a guided interview technique that contains 15 questions. The oral responses produced by the students were recorded, identified, described, and explained. The results show that in the syntactic and lexicon levels, both native and target language influenced the students’ interlanguage production. Native language influence includes 1) the use of Indonesian syntactic pattern; 2) the use of Indonesian acronym; 3) the use of Indonesian words; 4) omission of –s in plural forms; 5) omission of to be; 6) subject deletion; and 7) the use of verbs. Target language influence is observed in overgeneralization of articles, the use of to be, and the overgeneralization of ending –ed in the past tense.

Abstract

The research is aimed to find the expressive of illocutionary acts found in the comic and analyze the technique of translation implemented by the translator while translating comic ‘True Beauty’. The data used to support all the analysis for this study were taken from the Webtoon comic entitled ‘True Beauty’ with its translation into Indonesian ‘Secret of Angel’ of season 1. Even though the title in Indonesian is in English, but all conversation in the comic is in Indonesian. Documentation method was used in this study by reading the data source attentively and doing note-taking. This research was designed using qualitative method, and the result of analysis was descriptively explained. The theory supporting this study was proposed by Leech (1993) illocutionary speech act, theory of translation technique written by Molinda and Albir, and ethnography of SPEAKING proposed by Hymes (2009). The results of this study showed that there were 47 expressive illocutionary acts found in the comic. the expressive illocutionary act forms found were: thanking with 23 data, apologizing with 13 data, surprising with 5 data, dislike with 2 data, congratulating with 4 data. the translation technique employed by the translator were; literal translation (37), particularization (6), modulation (3), and discursive creation (1).

Abstract

This study aims to describe the form and use of euphemisms in hoax texts by meaning category. The data used is document entirely collect from the website cekfakta.com and turnbackhoax.id. The data was verified, classified and then analyzed and then was presented descriptively. The results of this study found as much as 18 forms of euphemisms, they are figurative expressions, metaphors, flippancy, remodeling, circumlocution, clippings, acronyms, abbreviations, omission, one word replacing one other word, general to specific, part to whole, hyperbole, meaning outside the statement, jargon, colloquial, borrowing, and foreign language forms. It is used in hoax for composing better speech, as if to convey facts with hyperbolic expressions, to tease or criticize others smoothly, in a political, religious, and health context.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and discuss the values in Hendrik Ibsen’s The Wild Duck. The method used in this study is descriptive. The data are a drama entitled The Wild Duck (1959). A library research method is applied in collecting the data. Furthermore, the data is analyzed qualitatively. Based on the result of the analysis, it was revealed that there are five kinds of Values found in The Wild Duck which are Moral Value, Social Value, Personal Value, Spiritual Value and Family Value. The most presented type is a moral value, it is about honesty. Social value is about interaction with around, friendship, respect to each other, justice. A personal value is a personality. Spiritual is non-material, it means the values of truth, inner peace, righteousness, and non-violence and the last is family values are beliefs, function as a family, ideals.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic having been spreading throughout the world has resulted in the emergence of various literary works with the aim of educating the wider community on how to anticipate it. One form of literary work helping educate and is well responded to by the community, especially school-aged children, is comics. Comics are very effective in attracting people to listen and read since the information is conveyed in attractive pictures and in easily digestible language. The comics written are translated into various languages ​​so that people in the regions and speakers of other languages ​​can receive the messages conveyed through the comics in question. Identifying the advantages of comics in educating the prevention of Covid-19 around the world, this research focuses on examining the process of translating a comic by Weiman Kou into Balinese. Translation is an effective way to develop learning, not only in college but also in the wider community environment. This study examines the procedure for translating comics by graduate students of linguistics. The results showed that the comic was translated by literal, calque, and borrowing procedures. In order to achieve quality translation results, it is suggested that translating does not only apply three types of procedures but also many other types of procedures, including communicative and idiomatic procedures. By applying these procedures, the message conveyed is perceived the same to both the source language reader and the target language reader.

Abstract

Studies show that teaching materials can be integrated with critical thinking skills for enhancing successful learning. However, the integration is not always clear as the communicativeness aspect of the materials also contributes to the goal of effective learning. This study focuses on critical thinking devices and the aspect of communicativeness fulfilled or violated in Indonesian primary school supplementary materials for language courses. It employs content or document analysis on the supplementary materials of the first graders on courses of English, Indonesian and Javanese languages. The analysis is based on the assumption that critical thinking tools and communicative aspects are the two main pillars that characterize the quality of language teaching materials in elementary schools. In addition, critical thinking tools are linked with communicative aspects of language teaching materials to target targeted competency standards. The results show that the communicativeness aspect is supported by the use of real context and authenticity of the materials. In terms of critical thinking device, the supplementary materials are supported by clear purpose in presenting key information. The evaluation on the supplementary materials concerns with the effort to improve the quality of primary school student’s cognitive attainment and critical thinking through communicative supplementary materials.

Abstract

As a typical learning method which is grounded from a scientific approach, problem-based learning (PBL) does not only enhance students’ critical thinking but also helps them actively construct their knowledge and skill. The objectives of this study were to investigate the impact of PBL on (1) students’ speaking skill and (2) their attitude toward ELL. This study employed an embedded mixed-method design which combined one-group pretest-posttest and descriptive qualitative design. It involved a group of 41 students as the sample. The quantitative data were collected through pretest-posttest and questionnaire (closed-ended). Meanwhile, the qualitative data were obtained through observation and open-ended questionnaire. The findings of the study found that students demonstrated better speaking performance after being treated through PBL activities. Besides, they exhibited more positive behavioral, cognitive, and affective attitude toward ELL.

Abstract

This study describes how interpersonal and ideational metaphors were realised in th writing of theses texts written by undergraduate students of English study program. This study is a documentary analysis of descriptive method. Data in the form of corpus data were randomly taken from 15 theses among 70 theses in population. Data were analyzed by focusing on the semantic functions covering interpersonal and ideational metaphors. The results showed that interpersonal metaphor was realised in mood system and modality. Mood system was realised mostly in declarative clauses than interrogative and imperative ones. This fact was caused by the channel of text, written text. Modality was least used in the texts. Ideational metaphor was sin transitivity system in which material process was mostly applied than mental, behaviour, existential, relational and verbal processes. Nominalisation was selected as the mostly used property of linguistic feature in writing theses. Ideational metaphor was more used than interpersonal metaphor. This fact happens due to the text channel, written text. Therefore, it is suggested that lecturers in their teaching should consider their teaching by including metaphorical meaning, especially ideational and interpersonal metaphors. Besides, it is suggested to conduct research by comparing languages, national or international languages such as between Indonesian and English or else.

Abstract

This is a descriptive qualitative study which aims at studying the use of the word sudah in the spoken use of Bahasa Indonesia in Sumba. According to Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia, sudah is an adverb used mostly to inform that something has already happened or that something has already been done. The position of sudah in phrases or sentences precedes the verb or adjective that it modifies. However, there is a different use of sudah in Sumba, and probably in mostly eastern islands in Indonesia, where this adverb is placed after the verb. The purpose of this research is to study the meaning brought by this new arrangement of sudah. The data was spoken use of Bahasa Indonesia collected through note-taking at campus, houses, and public places (market and stores). The data collected was then analyzed using agih method or meaning-analysis method. There were also 2 informants asked to get information on the function of the new arrangement. The analysis showed that the adverb sudah underwent the semantic or meaning broadening in its use. This study revealed there were 3 new meanings as the result of broadening process, (1) to give order or to ask other people to do something, (2) to invite other people to do something, and (3) to inform that something is about to happen or to be done soon. With these new meanings, the adverb sudah can also function as an adverb to show that something has not happened yet or something has not been done yet, the contrast of what is suggested in the dictionary.
