Abstract

Background: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a bilateral ocular allergic disease mediated by hypersensitivity reactions. VKC events occur in boys in the first decade of life and continue until puberty. Early identification and effective treatment are essential because the condition is recurrent and potentially burdensome to the patient's quality of life. This case report examines the diagnosis, management, and therapy options for patients with VKC and highlights the significance of the clinician's involvement in cases with VKC.Case Presentation: We report a case, a boy, 8 years old, came to the eye clinic at Cut Meutia Hospital with pain in both eyes, red eyes, decreased vision, and increased eye discharge. This complaint has been experienced for the past few years, and most appeared when the patient played under the sun or when the patient's allergy came. Examination showed mild conjunctival inflammation, pseudoptosis, and papillae on the limbus. Conclusion: The patient was diagnosed with VKC and received several treatments, including artificial tear and dexamethasone.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus can lead to various complications, one of the most devastating complications is infertility. Meanwhile, the antioxidant compounds of breadfruit leaves have been shown to help heal oxidative stress and therefore prevent infertility in diabetic patients. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of breadfruit leaves in improving sperm quality parameters in male diabetic Wistar rats. Methods: In this study, twenty four male rats were used and were classified into four groups. Two of the four groups were alloxan-induced diabetics and were treated with a graded dose of breadfruit leaf extract. The two control groups received no therapy and the treatment was administered for 30 days. The rats were terminated after day 31 and sperm concentration, morphology, motility, and spermatogenesis were examined. Result: The results showed that breadfruit leaves increase sperm quality parameter levels compared to the control groups. The group that received a 400 mg/kg dose of breadfruit leaves showed the most significant improvement in terms of the level of sperm parameters compared to the other group that received a dose of 100 mg/kg breadfruit leaves. Conclusions: The protective effect of breadfruit leaves significantly reduced sperm damage caused by diabetes mellitus in Wistar Rats.

Abstract

Background: COVID-19 is an infectious disease that attacks the respiratory tract. Pregnancy is considered as a risk factor because during pregnancy several physiological changes occur, namely increased expression of ACE2, changes in the respiratory system, and changes in the immune system, which make pregnant women more susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between the characteristics of pregnant women and the incidence of COVID-19.Methods: This observational analytic study used 51 samples of pregnant women, both infected with COVID-19 and those who were not, which were taken using a total sampling technique. The characteristics of pregnant women were taken through secondary data in the form of medical records at K.R.M.T. Wongsonegoro Regional Public Hospital Semarang, then analyzed univariately and bivariately using Spearman's test and contingency coefficient. Results: The results obtained from the bivariate analysis were p = 0.863 (> 0.005) for the comorbid history variable, p = 0.367 (> 0.005) for the body mass index variable, and p = 0.423 (> 0.005) for the hypertension incident variable. Conclusion: The results of this study concluded that there was no correlation between the characteristics of pregnant women (history of comorbidities, body mass index, and incidence of hypertension) with the incidence of COVID-19 in patients at K.R.M.T. Wongsonegoro Regional Public Hospital Semarang.

Abstract

Background: More than 50 mutations have been found in Omicron SARS-CoV-2. Most Omicron mutations are located in the spike protein, which plays a pivotal role in virus infection. The mutated spike protein in the Omicron variant increases virus transmissibility and potentially threatens the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines and antibody therapies. Herbal plants, such as Indian Ayurveda, African herbal plants, and Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCM), have been studied as SARS-CoV-2 potential therapy in several countries. Objective: This review explores potential phytochemical herbals that target spike protein omicron based on the available molecular docking studies. Methods: We collected research articles on the molecular docking of phytochemicals that target spike protein omicron. Combination of several keywords: in silico OR molecular docking AND spike omicron, were used as input for Google search. Out of 83 articles from Google search, eight articles matched the inclusion criteria and were selected in this review.Result: Protodioscin from Carica papaya and Landomycin A from Aloe vera are the most potential phytochemical inhibitors against spike protein with the free binding energy of -10.77 kcal/mol and -10kcal/mol, respectively.
