Abstract

this sophisticated technology era, the western morality which is based on individual freedom has spread quickly. According to its followers, the morality is a freedom measured by ability to develop and fulfill human desire without giving attention to its psychological and social effect. This view has dragged human into weakness and darkness of culture as the result of zero separation between right (allowed) and wrong (harm). On the other hand, in Islamic view, morality cannot be separated from the purpose of human creation that is based on the spirit of devotion to God and nature. So, every activity will have a positive value if it appropriates with His command. In this case, noble activity cannot be measured by honor from others because of its appropriateness to the others view, but certain activity which has strong relation with divinity external source.

Abstract

Sufism is the unique esoteric way to close to Allah as The Creator of this universe. Sufism teaches its scholars to purify their souls from the sins or something prohibited by Allah, and fulfill them with a good actions and characters. Sufism also coaches its scholars to base their actions with love to Allah, since love to Allah will guide scholars to love all Allah's creations such as like human, animal, tree, and all inside this universe. Loving Allah also drags people to be easy in obeying Allah's commandments where without love, people possibly hard to apply them. In all these terms, Sufism understood by its insiders (scholars) as a doctrine to be closer to Allah  that must be obeyed. In opponent with these insiders, the outsiders acknowledge Sufism is mere tenet that not must be obeyed totally, but can be absorbed and adopted partly. Annemarie Schimmel is one of outsiders Sufism. Schimmel adopted al-Rumi's Sufism taught without becoming Moslem who al-Rumi becomes. Schimmel only looks Sufism from the outside. She judges Sufism as a mystical taught which not only found in Islam, but also in other religions which have a mystical method. That's why she felt not need to be a Moslem, even she adopted and applied al-Rumi's taught, because she did not view al-Rumi as a Moslem teacher but a mystical teacher. Even Schimmel was not a Moslem, but, her study to Sufism should be appreciated, because outsider typically objective in their study.

Abstract

This essay tries to critically evaluate a way of thinking developed among Salafi leader dan PKS as a movement of Islamic revivalism which related to the implementation of Islamic law (syari’ah) into the Indonesian democracy context. There are a number of critical notes was discovered from literary researches and interviews with several leader of the movement. Firstly, basicly both PKS and Salafi leader longing for the implementation of Islamic law in the Indonesian democracy context. Despite the fact that PKS tend to act disparagingly toward democracy, while Salafi clearly repudiate democracy system, however, both of this group agree to “manipulate” this system to strugle for the embodiment of Islamic law with different strategies and substance. Secondly, PKS enters this system while trying to “objectify” Islamic values through preaching dan politics (structurally and culturally). In the same vein, Salafi manipulates democracy to strenghthen their ideological basis and their Islamic puritans awareness through preaching. Regarding politics, Salafi tends to be “pasive”.  Lastly, there are indications that the idea of the Islamic law implementation among PKS leader has dynamically changed following the politics dynamics. This often percieved as an inconsistency by the society. Meanwhile, the idea and efforts to implement Islamic law among Salafi leader is limited to the area of family rule and rarely about public rules. The result of this critical evaluation upon the implementation of Islamic law done by PKS and Salafi leaders, up to this point, have not provide a viable  recomendation as an ideal model of strengthening democracy system and implementing Islamic law in Indonesia.
