Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the pathological findings and molecular investigation of bacteria flora associated with the lesions in the lungs and livers of goats slaughtered for public consumption at the Ilorin, abattoir. A total of 450 samples (240 lungs and 210 livers) were collected and examined from goats slaughtered at the Ipata slaughterhouse in Ilorin, Kwara State. Of this number, 58 (24.17%; 95% CI = 19.19–29.96) lungs and 17 (8.10%; 95% CI = 5.17–12.58) livers revealed gross and microscopic pathological lesions as a result of bacterial pathogens. Based on gross examination, lung lesions were categorized into bronchopneumonia (27.59%), congestion (22.41%), interstitial pneumonia (17.24%), hemorrhages (13.77%), emphysematous (10.34%), and hyperemia (8.62%). In the liver, hepatic congestion 8 (47.06%) was the most observed gross lesion. Others included hepatic enlargement (29.41), hepatic fibrosis (17.65%), and hepatic abscess (5.88%). The molecular investigation revealed lung pathological lesions were as a result of Klebsiella species (51.72%) and Bacillus species (48.28%), while Escherichia species (52.94%) and Salmonella species (47.06%) were detected in the liver. The molecular analysis showed that the bacteria organisms detected in this study did not fully cluster with similar species from other parts of the world. The infection caused by these bacteria showed histopathological lesions in the lungs and livers. There is need for more studies to further characterize these bacteria species detected from Red Sokoto breeds of goats in-depth.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of administering a combination gel of binahong leaf and turmeric rhizome extracts on mature collagen of IIB degree Burns in rat. A total of 25 male rats, 3 months of age, 150-200 gram body weight were used. This research consists of five treatments. P0 were normal skin, P1 were used 1% silver sulfadiazine, P2, P3, and P4 were gel combination of binahong leaf and turmeric rhizome extracts with increase concentration of binahong leaf extract i.e. 1.25%, 2.5%, and 5%, while turmeric rhizome extract i. e 2% for each treatment. Treatments have been given topically for 14 days, twice a day, started after burn wound application. At the end of the treatment period, skin excision was carried out, then the histopathological examination was performed. Microscopic observation on the wound healing process on mature collagen density showed that P0 was not a significant difference with P3 and P4, but P0 was significant difference with P1 and P2. The better burn healing process on P3 is allegedly because of the activity of saponin, and tannin, contained in the binahong leaf extract 2.5%, and curcumin in turmeric rhizome extract 2% have been proven to be effective for topical burns therapy.

Abstract

Reptiles are a source of transmission of pathogenic bacteria to humans. Salmonella spp. are Gram-negative bacteria that are commonly found in the digestive tract of snakes. This study was conducted on Homalopsis buccata snakes with samples obtained by oral swabs and cloacal swabs on snakes. Isolation of Salmonella spp. carried out on Tetrathionate Broth media enrichment and will be inoculated on specific media in the form of Salmonella Shigella Agar media. Identification of bacteria was carried out by Gam staining and Indole, Methyl Red, Voges Proskauer and Citrate test. This study revealed the presence of Salmonella spp. in the snake Homalopsis buccata.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine how Staphylococcus aureus responded to Kembang Bulan (Tithonia diversifolia) leaf extract's antibacterial properties. Eight S. aureus bacterial isolates from three Surabaya dairy farms were used in this study. Tithonia diversifolia leaf extract at concentrations of 10%, 5%, 2.5%, 1.25%, and 0% were employed in the study's samples. The antibacterial activity of Tithonia diversifolia leaf extract was assessed in this work using the disk diffusion method and an inhibition zone estimated in millimeters. Based on the findings of this study, it was determined that Tithonia diversifolia leaf extract at 5% and 10% concentrations had 100% antibacterial activity against S. aureus in eight samples. As with S. aureus, Tithonia diversifolia leaf extract at concentrations of 0%, 1.25%, and 2.5% did not exhibit any antibacterial action.

Abstract

Kembang Bulan (Tithonia diversifolia ) is known as an herbal plant that has many useful properties to cure disease, such as diabetes, malaria, and other infections. Instead of much usefulness, T. diversifolia has main biological properties that may induce toxicity in this plant known as sesquiterpene lactones. The aim of this study was to identify the cytotoxicity effect of T. diversifolia leaf extract on limbal mesenchymal stem cells of rabbits using the MTT assay. T. diversifolia leaf extract was divided into 4 concentrations (0.5%, 0.25%, 0.125%, and 0.0625%) and given to limbal mesenchymal stem cells of rabbits in 96-well microplates, which would be incubated for 24 hours. The cytotoxicity result was obtained using the MTT assay method. Every well would be observed to see the cell life level of each concentration. The optical density absorbance was calculated using a microplate reader. T. diversifolia leaf extract with a concentration of 0.0625% has the biggest viability with a level of existence of limbal mesenchymal stem cells of 50%, and the other T. diversifolia leaf extract concentrations of 0.5%, 0.25%, and 0.125% have less than 50% level of existence of limbal mesenchymal stem cells.

Abstract

African Swine Fever Virus (ASF) is a viral disease in pigs that affects the supply of food of animal origin.  ASF is caused by a double-stranded DNA virus of the family Asfarviridae and genus Asfivirus, which can be transmitted and causes various bleeding events in the internal organs and is accompanied by a very high mortality rate.  This disease is generally characterized by fever, lack of appetite, and bleeding from the skin, back, and legs.  Even though this virus is not zoonotic and cannot be transmitted to humans, it is fatal and causes tremendous economic loss.  This disease spread throughout Asia in a relatively short time in 2019, and it has even been reported that this disease has entered Indonesia since the end of 2019.  The impact of this infection resulted in socioeconomic changes in both rural and urban communities, which could then affect the country's economy at the macro level.  Several countries are needed in their efforts to control ASF, one of which is to increase quarantine, limit the traffic of pigs, and reduce the population of sick pigs exposed to the ASF virus.

Abstract

Brucellosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria of the genus Brucella and classified as a zoonotic disease. Brucellosis is usually asymptomatic in infected female animals, but it can cause placentitis, which leads to abortion in the fifth to ninth months of pregnancy in pregnant animals. Brucella infection is lifelong in animals, and Brucella bacteria can be found in the blood, urine, milk, and sperm. To prevent the spread of brucellosis in beef cattle that will be trafficked through the Pantoloan animal quarantine installation. From January to June, blood serum of male beef cattle was collected at the Pantoloan Animal Quarantine Installation, Palu Agricultural Quarantine. The Rose Bengal Test method was used on up to 7.046 serum samples. In the first semester of 2018, the positive incidence of blood serum testing for beef cattle using the Rose Bengal Test (RBT) method at ten beef cattle traffic frequencies revealed seropositive brucellosis in 38 out of 7,046 samples tested. Beef cattle were sourced from the Central Sulawesi, Gorontalo, and South Sulawesi provinces. Blood serum samples from Central Sulawesi showed the highest positive incidence. Based on the prevalence of seropositive brucellosis based on RBT in beef cattle transported through the Pantoloan animal quarantine installation, several cattle breeding areas should be monitored during subsequent traffic, and public awareness should be raised to prevent the spread of brucellosis.

Abstract

A retrospective case-control study was conducted on dogs with patellar luxation who presented to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital Diliman Station-Companion Animal Clinic between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2019. There was a total of 73 dogs were diagnosed with patellar luxation. The majority of the dogs presented with limping, and the causes were mostly unknown. Unilateral medial patellar luxation was the most common type (21.92%). The average age of patients with patellar luxation was 3.24 years old. Puppies are 0.03 less likely to be diagnosed with patellar luxation, while juveniles are 3.74 times more likely, and mature adults are 2.19 times more likely to be diagnosed. The affected dogs included intact males (47.95%), neutered males (4.11%), and intact females (47.95%). The average weight of the affected dogs was 8.39 kg and the majority (35.62%) had a body condition score of 5/9. The Pomeranian was the most common breed for patellar luxation, followed by the mixed breed Shih Tzu, Toy Poodle, and Chihuahua. Mixed breeds are 0.39 times less likely, and dogs fed with dry dog food are 0.51 times less likely to develop the condition. Age and breed were also significantly associated with patellar luxation.

Abstract

  Pyometra commonly occurs in female dogs > 4 years of age. There are two types of pyometra: open pyometra and closed pyometra. Open pyometra referred to purulent and bloody discharge from the vulva, while closed pyometra did not have any vaginal discharge; however, there was an enlarged abdomen from the fluid-filled uterus. A 7-year-old domestic bitch with a swollen abdomen was clinically diagnosed with closed pyometra as there was no vaginal discharge. Additional examinations, such as radiography, complete blood count, and biochemistry profiles were also performed to establish the diagnosis. A clear mass with grayish features, characteristic of fluid-filled abdomen, was found on radiography, while complete blood examination showed leukocytosis and elevated globulin levels, indicating an infection. Based on the following examinations, ovariohysterectomy was performed to eliminate the source of infection. Anti-inflammatory and antibiotic drugs were administered post-surgery, and the patient fully recovered after one week of intensive care.

Abstract

Leptospirosis is a disease caused by Leptospira spp., zoonotic Gram-negative bacteria. This study aimed to determine the handling of a leptospirosis case in a dog at the Pet Vet Clinic, Jakarta. Handling began with anamnesis and continued by examining the patient's physical condition, followed by serological, microscopic, and polymerase chain reaction examinations. An examination revealed that the dog had Leptospirosis. The therapy given was the administration of crystalline procaine and penicillin-G antibiotics. Supportive treatment was given with hepatoprotective, lipotropic, and diuretic supplements. Ringer's lactate was used as fluid therapy. The treatment administered showed positive, progressive results in the patient.
