Abstract

Oral communication skill is the ability to receive and process the information (listening) and then respond and produce language (speaking) for which the messages delivered across and communication can run successfully. To most Indonesian students, speaking and listening English as can be challenging. Many factors influence how well someone can communicate orally in English, for instance: physical tools (ear and mouth), vocabulary mastery, grammatical knowledge, spoken discourse, and so forth. Therefore, I propose one technique namely “Three-Minute Descriptive Speech” which is executed during preteaching session to the students of The State Institute for Islamic Studies Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin (IAIN STS) Jambi. The qualitative data taken from twenty-seven students through openquestionnaires were analyzed. I found that the application of the technique gave benefits to the students, such as raising confidence, increasing motivation, and enhancing their oral communication skill. Keywords: Descriptive Speech, Speaking Skill, Oral Communication, Feedback

Abstract

Writing skill is reasonably complicated to acquire by most of English Foreign Language (EFL) learners. In contrast, to write effectively becomes significance for them due to their accomplishment in academic life for the most part may depend on it. A number of efforts have been made to develop students’ writing skill such as applying various writing approach. One of the approaches which considered sufficient to meet the learners’ need for writing essay is interactional approach. The essential factors in interactional approach are written input and feedback from both teachers and peers at every stage of writing. This paper will, subsequently, discuss the application of this approach at the prewriting stage namely generating ideas, and making outline. Since the cyclical process of writing tends to take time, the input and feedback from the lecturer on the students’ final drafts are more often considered final by them. Therefore, I rarely accepted the revised version of students’ final draft. This experience has led me to only share the progress of essay content. Keywords : Interactional Approach, Prewriting Stage, Content Accuracy

Abstract

One way to trace the words’ meaning, part of speech, and the phonetic transcription is by looking for into dictionary. Yet, it is not that simple since every dictionary has its own characteristics. Training in using dictionaries is very essential especially to senior high school students who are potentially use either electronicdictionary or non-electronic dictionary. Unfortunately, in most classrooms very little time is provided to specifically ‘teach’ students on how to maximize the use of dictionary. This article proposes some techniques to be applied by senior high school students in Indonesia to maximize the potential of every type of dictionary. Keywords : dictionary, electric, non-electric, senior high school students

Abstract

This research was based on the philosophy of Total Quality Management at university using the theory of quality management, and the concept of Service Quality. It was a qualitative inquiry which took two universities in Jambi, namely The Jambi State University and the State Institute for Islamic Studies considering their quality management systems. The study revealed that the quality management of both universities services was not optimum yet, particularly the students’ satisfaction. Those were indicated by these factors. First, planning was not based on the market research and environment scanning. Second, quality assurance department tend to be bureaucratic, low coordination, inconsistency between the blueprints and application, and incompetence human resources. Third, the implementation of academic services was not good yet in all aspects such as service quality, particularly due to delivery, emphaty, and reliability. Meanwhile, the evaluation of service quality management did not emphasize on corrective and preventive actions. I found out some critical inhibitor factors of the service quality management on these two universities; (1)’culture’ including disorganized habits, formalistic, and instant; (2) mindset of the management and academic staff ; (3) inconsistency and materialism mental attitude; (4) instructions rather than communication, (5) and lack of quality control system. The students’ academic satisfaction were inlfluenced by two factors; (1) the students perception on core service; (2) the students-teacher intraction. The implication of the study as follows.(1) Lower management should be involved in formulating strategic planning. (2) The lecturers should be empowered through some training to change their working culture, as well as mindset and mental attitude. (3) The academic content should be up dated based on customers’ need as well as sains and technology. (4) Evaluation and monitoring should be followed by corrective and preventive action. Keywords: quality management, academic services, university, Jambi.

Abstract

The progress of approaches in language instruction is line with general development of educational theory and practice that take learners as the main concern. Then the selection of content and learning experience is corresponded to the learners’ need, want, and lack since language instruction will be significant as learners are actively engaged in. Meaning is constructed by learners when their learning experiences link to the real world. Such meaningful learning is the philosophy of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL). In the teaching of writing, the integrated genre and process writing may reflect this contextual learning. The cyclical process of producing a text from modeling the target genre, narrowing a topic, generating ideas, outlining, drafting, peer editing, to producing final draft may reflect the principles and components of CTL: constructivism, questioning, inquiry, learning community, modeling, authentic assessment, and reflection.

Abstract

Many research and reviews in the field of language teaching have been increasingly recognizing the importance of learner factors in the success of language learning. The concerns about learners- center activities also seem to be a widespread agreement. They have the potential to to create conducive learning approach and opportunities for themselves. One of the learners’ inner factors is learning styles as a natural, habitual, preferred ways of absorbing, processing, and retaining new information and skills. The styles are as a preferred mode, ones in which a learner is more comfortable learning and at last it is expected to gain language learning objectives.
