Abstract

This research examined the effectiveness of English as the solely instructional medium in one informal educational institution. In the first English class, an English-only rule was strictly ruled whereas in the second English class, the use of Bahasa Jambi as the students’ local language was permitted. The research is appropriately undertaken as a mix method research with quantitative and qualitative approach. The site of the research is an established informal English institution in Indonesia. The authors usedthree kinds of instruments in collecting the data; questionnaires,tests (pre-test and post-test), and interviews. Participants of the research are the students of intermediate classes of aninformal education institution in Jambi. The results show that 1) the students of the first class have stronger preferences to learn English than the students of the second class 2) the students’ English proficiency improvement of the first English class “under the strict rule of the use of English” is slightly higher than that of the second class “the local language permitted”. Suggestions and recommendations are offered for the betterment of English teaching and learning in Indonesia.Keywords: English, Instructional Medium, Proficiency, and Responses.

Abstract

One of the responsibilities a lecturer should concern while teaching the students is to create a communicative environment, instead of worrying about the process of teaching and put no regard on the students’ language ability. This research aimed to find out the kinds of strategy in teaching speaking of English Education Study Program and to know the application of those strategies in the classroom. The research designed in this study was a descriptive qualitative to describe the status of things in the present or in the past. It meant that the data gathered were not analysed in term of number statistical accounting, but were analysed in the qualitative form which is more than more numbers or frequencies. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that the most lecturers’ teaching strategy that used in teaching speaking are using recording & transcripts, dialogues, discussion, classroom conversation, and casual chat. Lecturers’ used that technique because it is based on the handbook and it is easy to practice. Some other strategy sometimes used by lecturers’, but the frequency is very rare. The most used are dialogues and conversation and chat and jokes. Based on the discussion, most students like the strategy that used by the teacher. Abstract

This research attempts to find out students’ difficulties, their translation quality and the causes of such difficulties in translating business text. The type of this research is a descriptive research. The research data were obtained from translation test and the analysis of students’ translations. The result showed that the students have difficulties in the level of lexical, grammatical, contextual, textual and cultural problems. It was employed two raters from English lecturers in order to assess the test and describe the students’ translation quality objectively and two lecturers of Bahasa to validate the target language. The result also showed that the qualities of students’ translation were classified into bad quality. The analysis of students’ translation moreover showed that the causes of students’ difficulties were lack of translation competencies; lack of language competence, textual competence, subject competence, cultural competence and transfer competence. Dealing with text in certain discipline especially business text, it should be separately instructed in teaching learning process or the text should be analyzed and comprehended by students before going to transfer the whole message into target text. Also, translation process and strategies should be taught in the same time with the practice of translation. Keywords: Difficulties, translation quality, translation competencies, business text

Abstract

The purpose of this research were: 1) To determine the learning styles of students, 2) to know the correlation between students’ learning style and their speaking performance, and 3) to know the contribution of learning styles toward speaking performance. This research was descriptive quantitative research with statistical analysis techniques using Pearson Product Moment. The collection of data obtained through questionnaires and speaking performance rubric. The results showed the overall look that learning styles at Third Semester of English Education Program of IAIN STS Jambi is a visual 14 students (43.75%), audiovisual 10 students (31.25%), kinesthetic 8 students (25%). And also based on the Pearson Product Moment Correlation test, it was known that there was very high correlation between learning style and speaking performance with Pearson Correlation value  0.842 with a significance value 0.000 <0.005 so it can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between learning style and speaking performance. Then, based on the simple linear regression test showed that learning style contributed as much as 7,1% (R Square 0,071) on the speaking performance.   Keywords : Learning Styles, Speaking Performance, University Students

Abstract

Abstract Recently, many people able to use more than one language in communication with people around them. Code switching is one of the embodiment of this fact. An English teacher is expected to be able use English when he teach in classroom, but some An English teacher recognized that they sometimes use Indonesian in classroom with some benefits of it. The purpose of this study is to find out types and function of code switching, to identify factors influencing code switching, and to know how the using of code switching spoken by English teacher of Modern Islamic Boarding School Al-Hidayah Jambi. The researcher used descriptive qualitative approach as method for analyzing the data. The researcher collected the data by recording, interview and observation. The types of code switching were observed by researcher only focus on the grammatical aspects. As the result, researcher found that teacher used three types of code switching in classroom. Next, functions of code switching that found by researcher were ten functions Then, teacher recognized that there were some factors influencing code switching.
