Abstract

This qualitative inquiry is aimed at analysing demotivation factors of teachers inIndonesian Pesantrens(Islamic Boarding School) in implementing EFL teaching.The research is appropriately undertaken as a qualitative research with a case studyapproach. The research sites for this study are two Pesantrens in Jambi, one ofIndonesian Provinces. Eight English teachers were involved as the participants toprovidebroader perspectives of the participants in relation to the EFL teaching. Theresearcher usedthree kinds of instruments in collecting the data; interview, focusgroup discussion, and document review. The researcher conducted the observation,interviewed the teachers, held focus group discussion, and collected relateddocuments to support the data.To assess the trustworthiness of the research, theresearcher did triangulation, member checking and reflexivity. The findings describeworking condition (financial matter and working overload); curriculum (rapidchanging of Indonesian curriculum and lack of teaching and supporting materials);facilities (classroom temperature and over-crowded classroom); students (lack ofbasic knowledge and lack of motivation).

Abstract

This research examined the effectiveness of English as the solely instructional medium in one informal educational institution. In the first English class, an English-only rule was strictly ruled whereas in the second English class, the use of Bahasa Jambi as the students’ local language was permitted. The research is appropriately undertaken as a mix method research with quantitative and qualitative approach. The site of the research is an established informal English institution in Indonesia. The authors usedthree kinds of instruments in collecting the data; questionnaires,tests (pre-test and post-test), and interviews. Participants of the research are the students of intermediate classes of aninformal education institution in Jambi. The results show that 1) the students of the first class have stronger preferences to learn English than the students of the second class 2) the students’ English proficiency improvement of the first English class “under the strict rule of the use of English” is slightly higher than that of the second class “the local language permitted”. Suggestions and recommendations are offered for the betterment of English teaching and learning in Indonesia.Keywords: English, Instructional Medium, Proficiency, and Responses.

Abstract

This study examined Indonesian and Malaysian pre-service teachers’ digitaltechnology integration during teaching practices. Technological pedagogical andcontent knowledge (TPACK) framework was utilised to predict the use of digitaltechnology. The objectives of the study is to determine if the TPACK is a valid andreliable model to explain pre-service teachers’ digital technology integration duringteaching practices. Three hundred and seventy-seven pre-service teachers from twouniversities completed a 37-item survey instruments based on the TPACK and digitaltechnology implementation. The establishment of the instruments was conductedthrough content validity, face validity, and content validity index (CVI). Pilot studydata were analysed through the test of reliability and exploratory factor analysis(EFA). The current study results, computed through partial least squares structuralequation modelling (PLS-SEM) informed 13 hypotheses. Overall, the TPACKcomponents are interconnected and reported to be a valid model to help explainIndonesian and Malaysian pre-service teachers’ digital UICT during teachingpractice. Policy recommendations and suggestions are offered for the betterment ofIndoensian teachers’ level of TPACK and digital technology integration.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out students' problems in writing in the fifth-semester students in one Islamic University in Jambi. We used survey and the population of this research was the fifth-semester students consisting of 198 students. 70 students were selected as the sample. The questionnaire consists of 28 questions of 7 types of problems with 5 alternative answers. The researcher used SPSS to analyze the data. It was found that there were 7 types of the problems that students faced in their writing course. They were poor organization/illogical sequence, problems of word choice, grammatical error, spelling problems, supporting ideas confusions, punctuation problems, and capitalization. The overall mean of students' problems in writing in the fifth-semester students in Islamic Institution in Jambi was (x=2.70) categorized as "medium". Specifically, students problems in poor organization/illogical sequence was (x=3.69) , problem of word choice (x=3.72), grammatical error (x=3.25), spelling problem (x=3.35), confused on supporting the ideas (x=3.12), punctuation problem (x=3.17), capitalization (x=3.35). All the process in scientific approach was categorized as "medium" for the students. It means that the students did not find significant difficulty in writing course. Moreover, from the interpretation of the mean, and most of the students agreed that they had  dominant problems; word choice and poor organization/illogical sequence.

Abstract

ANALISIS KEBIJAKAN PENDIDIKAN INKLUSI: STUDI KASUS DI SEKOLAH DASAR JAMBIAbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi dan mendiskripsikan jenis kebijakan dan program pendidikan yang dibuat oleh pemerintah khususnya tentang kebijakan pendidikan inklusi terkait dengan kurikulum pendidikan inklusi, rekrutmen guru pembimbing khusus (GPK), dan sarana prasarana di sekolah dengan kebijakan pendidikan inklusi. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara dengan delapan informan, observasi di lima kelas, dan dokumentasi di SD Negeri 131/IV Jambi yang menjadi tempat penelitian ini. Data wawancara dianalisis dengan menggunakan “within case and cross-case analysis” antarinforman. Data observasi dicatat dan disajikan sesuai dengan tema hasil wawancara dan data dokumen digunakan sebagai pembanding data wawancara dan observasi. Hasil dari penelitian ini menjabarkan tentang tidak ada persiapan penerimaan murid baru dan kurangnya perhatian pemerintah atas dukungan sarana prasarana. Penyajian data juga termasuk tantangan yang dihadapi dalam penerapan pendidikan inklusi di Provinsi Jambi. Saran dan masukan berupa peran aktif pihak sekolah dalam penyelenggaraan pendidikan inklusi, melakukan perekrutan guru yang baik, dan bagi pemerintah untuk mendukung sarana dan prasarana pendidikan.AbstractThis study was aimed at exploring and describing the types of education policies and programs developed by the government, especially on inclusive education policies related to inclusion-education curriculum, special mentor recruitment, and infrastructure facilities in the schools which implemented inclusive education policies. The study used a qualitative approach with a case-study method. The data were collected through interviews with 8 informants, 5 classroom observations, and documentation at the State Elementary School 131/ IV Jambi. The interview data were analyzed using within-case and cross-case analyses among informants. The observational data were recorded and presented in accordance with the theme of the interview results and documentation data was used as the comparison. The results show that there is no new student admission preparation, and the lack of government attention on infrastructure supports. The presentation of data also includes the challenges faced in implementing inclusive education in Jambi. The suggestion for school parties in the implementation of inclusive education is by conducting teacher recruitment and for the government to support educational facilities and infrastructure.

Abstract

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis masalah yang dihadapi oleh pondok-pondok pesantren yang ada di Kota Seberang Jambi dan peran aktif mereka berpartisipasi dalam pelaksanaan tujuan pendidikan nasional Indonesia. Penelitian ini menggunakan studi kasus dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Jumlah partisipan dalam penelitian ini meliputi kepala pesantren, guru, dan pengelola yang bekerja di dua Pesantren di Kota Seberang, Jambi. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik observasi, wawancara, dan teknik diskusi kelompok. Hasil observasi disajikan secara deskriptif. Analisis data hasil wawancara dimulai dengan mentranskrip hasil, melakukan pengecekan ulang, menghilangkan bagian yang tidak diperlukan, dan mengodifikasi hasil untuk dijadikan tema-tema. Data hasil diskusi kelompok disajikan untuk memperkuat data hasil wawancara, dikodifikasi, dan dianalisis. Pemeriksaan keabsahan data menggunakan triangulasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat beberapa problematika yaitu kurangnya tenaga pengajar yang berkualitas, metode pengajaran yang masih bersifat tradisional dan belum banyak variasi, kebijakan kurikulum yang berubah-ubah, fasilitas pendidikan yang belum memadai, dan keuangan pesantren yang belum dapat mencukupi.Kata kunci: problematika, dunia pendidikan Islam, pondok pesantren ISLAMIC EDUCATIONAL ISSUESAND ISLAMIC BOARDING SCHOOL CHALLENGES IN 21ST CENTURY AbstractThis study aimed at analyzing the problems faced by islamic boarding schools in Seberang, Jambi and the active role they participate in the implementation of national education goals of Indonesia. This study was a case study with a qualitative approach. The number of participants in this study were the heads of schools, teachers, and managers who work in two boarding schools in Seberang, Jambi. The data were collected by observation, interview and group discussion techniques. The observation results were presented descriptively. Analysis of interview data began with transcribing the results, re-checking, eliminating the parts that are not needed, and codify the results to be used as themes. The data from group discussions served to reinforce the interview data, codified, and analyzed. The examination of data validity was using triangulation. The results show that there are some problems namely the lack of qualified teaching staff, traditional teaching methods, inconsistant curriculum policy, inadequate educational facilities, and unsufficient schools finance.Keywords: problems, Islamic education, Islamic boarding school

AN ANALYSIS OF THE ENGLISH TEACHING AND LEARNING PROCESS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE 2013 ENGLISH CURRICULUM AT SMA NEGERI 3 JAMBI Akhmad Habibi English Education Study Program, Jambi University, Jambi, Indonesia tjohor@ymail.com Abstract: This study was aimed at analysing the implementation of teaching and learning process as one of the standard of process parts in the 2013 Curriculum. This was a qualitative study with a case study approach conducted at SMA Negeri 3 Jambi. Three English teachers and 237 students of grade XI were involved as the participants. The data were collected through interview with the teachers, observation, students’ questionnaire, and document review. To assess the trustworthiness of this study, the researcher did triangulation, member checking and reflexivity.The findings covered the analysis of the implementation of teaching and learning process which included two-essentially scripted aspects: classroom management and teaching and learning process. The classroom management was grouped into three sub-themes: teaching performance, classroom attitude, and time management. Teaching and learning process implementation covered three activities: introductory, core, and closing activities. Based on the findings, suggestions such as to limit the number of the students, to provide cutting-edge technology devices, and to hold trainings for teachers, were proposed for teachers of English, schools, and educational authorities, respectively. Abstract

Penelitian pengembangan ini bertujuan untuk : (1) mengetahui performa dari pengembangan video pembelajaran lari gawang dengan menggunakan alat yang dimodifikasi untuk siswa sekolah dasar, (2) mengetahui keefektifan video pembelajaran lari gawang dengan menggunakan alat yang dimodifikasi untuk siswa sekolah dasar. Model pengembangan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah model ADDIE (Analysis-Desain-Development-Implementation-Evaluation). Model ini terdiri dari lima tahap, yaitu: tahap analisis, tahap desain, tahap pengembangan, tahap implementasi dan tahap evaluasi. Hasil penelitian pengembangan ini menunjukkan bahwa: (1) proses pengembangan video pembelajaran lari gawang dengan mengunakan alat yang dimodifikasi dilakukan dengan beberapa tahapan, yaitu: 1) hasil validasi ahli materi dari validasi tahap I diperoleh hasil persentase sebesar 64,6% dengan kriteria cukup layak, kemudian dilakukan perbaikan sesuai dengan saran ahli materi dan dilakukan validasi tahap II diperoleh hasil persentase 92,3% dengan kriteria sangat layak, 2) hasil validasi ahli media dari validasi tahap I di peroleh hasil persentase sebesar 66,3 % dengan kriteria cukup layak, kemudian dilakukan perbaikan sesuai dengan saran ahli media dan dilakukan validasi tahap II diperoleh hasil persentase 71,6% dengan kriteria layak; (2) keefektifan video pembelajaran lari gawang dengan menggunakan alat yang dimodifikasi berdasarkan hasil uji coba lapangan, meliputi uji coba guru PJOK diperoleh 93% dengan kriteria sangat layak, (3) penggunaan video pembelajaran lari gawang dengan menggunakan alat yang dimodifikasi berdasarkan uji coba lapangan, meliputi:1) uji coba kelompok kecil yaitu 10 siswa diperoleh hasil 82,8% dengan kriteria layak, 2) uji coba kelompok besar dengan 25 siswa kelas IV di SD Negeri 205/IV Kota Jambi, diperoleh hasil 87,7% dengan kriteria layak. Pengembangan ini telah membuktikan bahwa video pembelajaran lari gawang dengan menggunakan alat yang dimodifikasi untuk siswa sekolah dasar layak, efektif dan baik. Berdasarkan hal tersebut, pengembang menyarankan kepada berbagai pihak terutama guru PJOK pada tingkat SD/Mi kelas IV agar menggunakan video pembelajaran lari gawang dengan menggunakan alat yang dimodifikasi sebagai media pembelajaran.

Abstract

Realizing the importance of knowledge management (KM) in improving the supply chain; KM is identified as one of the sustainable factors to educational achievement. The purpose of this study was to explore the knowledge management among principals and teachers in high performance schools in Malaysia. Information was gathered from six teachers and four principals from four different schools in Northern Malaysia. The data was collected through demographic profiles and semi-structured interviews. We identified five major themes related to teachers and principals in managing knowledge management in school; (1) Knowledge Received, (2) Knowledge Documentation, (3) Knowledge Sharing, (4) Knowledge Creation, and (5) Knowledge Application. Policy implications and suggestions for future research are also discussed.
