Abstract

This discussion aims to see how exploitation has happened towards women through and by the media in the 21st century, which is controlled by the capitalists, and its relationship with the 2nd sila (principle) of Pancasila. This discussion tries to analyze by observing the figure of “cewek kece” (hot chicks) as the ideal female figure in the 21st century on television. The results of the analysis proved that the exploitation of women’s bodies has happened through and by the media, especially television. It is in the form of commodification of “cewek kece”, symbolic violence, and the pressure towards women to have slim bodies. For the results of this analysis, when it is associated with the 2nd sila of Pancasila, it indicates that there is an incompatibility between the exploitation of women’s bodies and the values and teachings of Pancasila as the foundation of national identity. Abstract

Community radio is basically unique media of communication which is viewed from how it was established, its operational management and its programs which are to build the society around it. Community radio is participatory media. It means community radio provides public sphere through horizontal communication among its members. Thus, it is seen as fertile ground for developing civic community whose members have an interest in discussing common problems in the same position that binds them together through collective association in civic values. It shows that in the beginning, the operational management followed the basic rules and the ideal principles. Unfortunately, the management of Mustika is more like daily broadcasting principles which are similar to private radios. Keywords: Community Radio, Radio Management, Participatory Media

The year 2013 is called a political year by many observers. It is because this year KPU announces the political parties which will join 2014 General Election. This period is also used by the leaders of political parties to consolidate their organizations, and determine the candidates of legislature members or even consider the figures for 2014 presidential candidates. It is natural that the figures of presidential candidates start to emerge in the society. It can be through socialization and introduction of the Presidential candidates, either in the form of posters, billboards, or advertisements in the media and other ways. The purpose is that the figures will be immediately recognized by the people who become constituents. This study examines the role of media in society. Abstract

Ideology will have power if it can be represented and communicated. Ideology is full of interest including ideology which is owned by media. This ideology makes the media not neutral. This study was conducted based on the view of James Lull. The object of the study was the pictures of 2009 presidential candidates who became the front cover of Koran Tempo. It was expected to be able to explain how ideology works in the visual communication design (pictures) without using verbal language. By using semiotic analysis, this study was able to reveal it. To facilitate the research, the object of this study was divided into six units of analysis which consists of theme object, verbal text, visualization, composition, readers’ point of view (viewers) and modalities. Based on the research result, it could be concluded that the transformation process in ideology of interest from both internal and external sides of Koran Tempo in reporting the 2009 presidential candidates also occurred in the form of visual communication. It was designed to look as neutral as possible so that it could get into the readers’ subconscious without coercion. Keywords: Ideology of media, visual communication design

Abstract

Abstract

Community radio movement could be considered as media of resistance / counter hegemony. However, in fact, some community radios are far from expectations. Two community radio stations in Yogyakarta, which are Panaganti Radio in Terban and Angkringan Radio in Timbulhardjo, are not able to become media of resistance (Eddyono, 2011). Radio fails because government rules are too restrictive towards community radio. As a result, community radio cannot solve its own internal problems in order to survive for a long period. Moreover, this research could not get an answer about the role of Jaringan Radio Komunitas Indonesia (Indonesian Community Radio Network) in making a series of strategies to save the existence of community radio under its network, including Angkringan Radio and Panaganti Radio. This study used qualitative research and adopted Gramsci’s perspective on social movements and organic intellectual to understand the strategies which are used by JRKI to save the existence of community radio. As a result, JRKI strategies still have many weaknesses. JRKI is running out of energy in saving the existence of community radio.
