Abstract

This study aimed to determine the efficacy of administration chloroform extract of bitter melon fruit partition to decrease blood glucose levels of hyperglycemic rat (Rattus norvegicus). Measurement of blood glucose levels was done before and streptozotocin injected on days -1, 0, 4, 11, and 18 after mice hyperglycemia. Treatment of bitter melon extract and chloroform partition performed after mice hyperglycemia until day 18th. This study consisted of four treatments and five repetitions using a completely randomized design. Four of this treatment is the control of rats (P0), streptozotocin-treated rat with a dose of 40 mg kg (P1), streptozotocin-treated rat with a dose of 40 mg/kg and bitter melon extract 2% (200 mg/kg) (P2) and streptozotocin-treated rat at a dose of 40mg/kg and chloroform partition 50 mg/kg (P3). The results showed that administration of chloroform partition and bitter melon fruit extract significantly ( P <0.05) to decrease the body's blood glucose levels.

Abstract

Paracetamol is one of NSAIDs (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs) that acts as an analgesic and antipyretic agents but with weak anti-inflammatory activity. Paracetamol has toxic effects to liver in the form of damage to the liver. To prevent the toxic effects of paracetamol, the provision of antioxidants which can protect liver cells damage caused by paracetamol is needed. High antioxidant found in propolis which is widely used at this time. This study used 25 male rats (Rattus norvegicus), which consists of five groups. Each treatment group was given standard food and drink. Group 1 (control negative) was given standard food and drink, group 2 (control positive) was given 250 mg/kg body weight of paracetamol orally, group 3 (Pp1) was given 250 mg/kg body weight of paracetamol and each rat was given 0.05 ml of propolis orally, group 4 (Pp2) was given 250 mg/kg body-weight of paracetamol and each rat was given 0.1 ml of propolis orally, and group 5 (Pp3) was given 250 mg/kg body weight of paracetamol and each rat was given 0.15 ml of propolis orally. The treatments were given for 10 days, and on the 11th day, the necropsy was done to take the livers of the 25 rats for histopathology preparation. The examined variables included vascular congestion, fatty degeneration, and necrosis with the score (0: no lesions; 1: focal lesions; 2: multifocal lesions; 3: diffuse lesions. Kruskal-Wallis test showed a significant difference on the average of the vascular congestion, fatty degeneration, and necrosis of the tested group. The result of the research, it can be concluded that the 250 mg/kg body weight of Parasetamol can cause liver damage and the 0.15 ml of Propolis for each rat could repair the tissue damage better than the dose of 0.05 ml and 0.1 ml.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes) collected from Lead (Pb) polluted water in feed to histopathological changes in pig’s liver and kidney. A total of eight Landrace pigs were used in this study, consisted of four groups: pigs were fed without hyacinth (A), pigs were fed with 2.5% hyacinth (B), pigs were fed with 5.0% hyacinth (C), and pigs were fed with 7.5% hyacinth (D). The sample of dead pigs were dissected at the end of study to examined the liver and kidney. Both organs sample were immersed in a fixative solution of 10% neutral buffered formalin. The samples were then processed for tissue processing by using Hematoxillin-Eosin method before performing histophatological examination by using 100x, 200x and 400x magnificence under a microscope. Data were then analyzed descriptively by comparing the pathological changes in the liver and kidneys between groups. The results showed that the administration of water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes) collected from Lead (Pb) polluted water causes a histopathological changes in the liver and kidneys of Landrace pigs. The changes include degeneration, necrosis and inflammation.

Abstract

Propolis is a substance produced by bees that has some benefits, such as: antioxidants and antiulkus. Paracetamol is a relatively safe drug for gastric, but in some studies claimed that high doses of paracetamol increase the risk of gastric mucosal disorders, such as: ulceration, desquamation, and erosion. The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of propolis in histopathological gastric rats that were given high doses of paracetamol. This study used a completely randomized design. A sample of 25 male rats were divided into 5 groups i.e.: a negative control without treatment paracetamol (P0), a positive control (P) that was given paracetamol 250 mg/kgbw, and three other groups given treatment with paracetamol 250 mg/kgbw with a variation of propolis, P1 (0.05 ml/rat), P2 (0.10 ml/rat), and P3 (0.15 ml/rat). The treatment was given in 10 days, then necropsy was done and gastric organs were taken. Histologic gastric specimen for histopathological examination was made by using the Kiernan method (1990) and stained with hematoxylin eosin (HE). Variables examined include histopathological lesions of erosion, desquamation, and ulceration of the gastric epithelium. Results indicate that in treatment P severe damage to the gastric (desquamation) has occurred, while the entire treatment P1, P2, and P3 show the repair from the damage caused by the paracetamol. Treatment P3 gives the best results in reducing the effects of the paracetamol. This study concluded that the provision of propolis may reduce the histopathological side effects on white rat’s gastric givenhigh dose of paracetamol.
