Abstract

Antibiotics are not only used for humans, but also often used for cattle and livestock which are then been consumed by humans. This over prescribed and missed used of antibiotic is a major factor in antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance is a condition where bacteria are unable to be treated with antibiotics. In fact, the use of antibiotics is the first response in curing infectious diseases (by bacteria) and preventing infectious diseases spreading. With antibiotic resistance, preventing infectious diseases by bacteria became harder. This community service activity came up with a slogan "Antibiotic Resistence Awareness Movement" was carried out in Surabaya 10 Public High Schools and Surabaya 17 Public High Schools with 60 students per school using several methods, namely: (a) giving lecture material using LCD projectors ) the implementation of poster making competitions, and (c) poster presentations that have been made that are accompanied by question and answer, and (d) evaluation activities in the form of written tests covering pre-test and post-test. Concerning the results of posters results, poster presentations and improving the results of this posttest can be concluded as a result of an increase in understanding and or knowledge of students of SMA 10 and SMA 17 Surabaya

Abstract

Humans are the most crucial host of Salmonella Typhi as it has limited ability to reproduce outside the human body. Salmonella Typhi infections caused Typhoid fever which can be prevented with vaccines. This study aims to develop an effective typhoid fever oral vaccine using a liposomal delivery system.  Several studies showed that the immunization of AdhO36 protein from Salmonella Typhi orally provides significant protection in inhibiting the Salmonella Typhi to the mice intestine. β-Glucan is a potent immunostimulant for macrophages activations. Meanwhile, the method used to produce Liposome formulations was using thin-film hydration. The liposomal products had good characteristics based on their particle size. The particle size results met the requirement for optimum intestinal absorption 399.220+28.095 nm Liposome+AdhO36 and 383.360+8.594 nm Liposome+β-glucan. Based on the zeta potential measurement, the electrical charges of the three formulations were positive, meaning that the liposome is cationic because of the DDAB (Dimethyl Dioctadecyl Ammonium Bromide) component. The positive charge will facilitate the internalization of antigen to the immunity cells.

Abstract

Background: Pepper plants belong to the Piperaceae family with many pharmacological activities. The fruits of these plants have been widely used traditionally for various therapies, one of which is an aphrodisiac. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the aphrodisiac activity of the fruits of three pepper plants, Piper nigrum, Piper retrofractum, and Piper cubeba to prove their traditional use. Methods: The level of piperin, the active compound of plants from the family Piperaceae, was also determined in the ethanolic extract of those three fruits of the pepper plant. The aphrodisiac activity was determined by counting the number of introducing and mounting mice. The acute toxicity test of the extract was carried out according to the OECD-423 guidelines. Results: The ethanolic extract of Piper nigrum fruits had the highest piperin concentration, while the ethanolic extract of Piper retrofractum fruits had the highest aphrodisiac activity, according to the findings. During the entire duration of the acute toxicity study, no signs of toxicity or mortality were discovered. Conclusion: This study proves that all fruits of three species of pepper plants exhibit aphrodisiac activity. Furthermore, this study also shows that not only piperin is responsible for the aphrodisiac effect.
