Abstract

This article compares how the Indonesian, specifically the urban people respond to the pandemic during the history. In 1918, Indonesia, formerly known as the Dutch East Indies, witnessed a pandemic of the Spanish Flu that killed thousands of lives. A century later, Indonesia is once again experienced with the lethal Covid-19 pandemic. The emphasized responses are specific on countermeasures and vaccination programs during the Spanish Flu 1918 and Covid-19 pandemics. The primary source of this research is the archive of annual reports (Kolonial Verslag) Dutch East Indies government 1920 and a report from the Dutch East Indies Civil Health Service (Burgerlijken Geneeskujdigen Dienst), as well as supported by newspapers such as: Sin Po, Oetoesan Hindia, Pewarta Soerabaia, Tjhoen Tjhioe,Bataviaasch Nieuwsblad, and Andalas. This article also aims at understanding how the Indonesian people are handling pandemics, both the Spanish Flu and the Covid-19 pandemics. The action taken by the government in tackling the Spanish flu and Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia is to issue regulations to reduce activities in the public domain. This regulation has proven successful in reducing the spread of the Spanish flu pandemic in the past and Covid-19 in the present. This research found that Indonesian urban in the past and today have similar points of view, the irrational views and rational views, this is proofed from the emergence of unique, local-rational, and uncontrollable news and rumours because of the amplification of news about the outbreak.  The difference is that in the past, religious responses were expressly confronted with the news but in the present, it is more moderate and open to cooperating with programs from the government. The spectrum from the news of the past outbreaks is not as large as that of the present. Mass media with information technology to social media are further expanding the spectrum from outbreak news to produce more powerful amplifications. It also affects the polarization of the masses that respond rationally and irrationally to the outbreak.

Abstract

This article discusses the history of railways as transportation support for the plantation industry in East Sumatra in the period 1881-1940. The history of railways in East Sumatra can not be separated from the history of Deli tobacco plantations since the beginning of the arrival of Nienhuys, which became the early era of Deli Maatschappij. Deli Maatschappij was the one who built the entire railroad network and all its facilities along the East Sumatra plantation belt area since the 19th century through its subsidiary named Deli Spoorweg Maatschappij (DSM). The method used is the historical method. A literature study conducted is to reconstruct the history of railways in East Sumatra collected from a number of historiographies. The results found that DSM has built a 553,223 km rail network along the plantation area of the east coast of Sumatra. The progress achieved by Deli Maatschappij and DSM can be said as a benchmark for the success of the plantation industry in East Sumatra. The existence of the plantation industry, the presence of private entrepreneurs, and the construction of the railroad network later greatly influenced the development of the city of Medan as a new business center with all the modern urban facilities that complement it.Keywords: transportation history, railways, Deli Spoorweg Maatschappij, East Sumatra plantations.

Abstract

This article discusses the scorched earth tragedy that occurred in Pangkalan Brandan during the Indonesian independence revolution. Pangkalan Brandan is an area that is included in the territory of the Sultanate of Langkat. Before being managed by a foreign company, the oil mines in this area were managed by the local community in a traditional way. However, after the discovery of new oil wells in Telaga Said and Telaga Tunggal by the Dutch East Indies company Koninklijke Nederlandsche Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Petroleumbronnen in Nederlandsch Indie, the management of Brandan petroleum was managed in a modern way. This study uses the historical method in four writing steps, namely; heuristics, verification or criticism, interpretation, and historiography, based on library research related to the topic under study. At the end of the Dutch East Indies rule, the Brandan petroleum mine was burned by the Dutch due to the imminent arrival of Japanese troops. Then after being controlled by Indonesia, there was another scorching of the Pangkalan Brandan oil refinery carried out by fighters and the surrounding community. This terrible tragedy is still celebrated as the "Scorched Earth Pangakalan Brandan" event.

Abstract

Learning resources are part of learning that is very important for the success or failure of learning. So far, experience has shown that many lecturers who teach on campus still rely on books as the main reference in their teaching process. Of course, this cannot be called wrong, but making textbooks the only reference work has led to a decrease in the creativity of lecturers and students. This also happened to history subjects at UISU. In sixth semester history classes, where the subject is based mostly on facts and past events and one's memory is limited, books are very reliable in recalling the lecturer's memory of the material he taught the students. Likewise, students who are often given assignments by subject lecturers often make history textbooks and/or textbooks for other subjects, most of them make textbooks as learning resources and sources or materials to complete their subject assignments. The purpose of this work is to describe and analyze the use of history textbooks as a source of student learning in the history curriculum of the Islamic University of North Sumatra. The research method used in the preparation of this article is the literature review method, namely by means of sources obtained from books and scientific journals. The results of this study indicate that history textbooks play a very important role in ongoing history learning, so that it can be said that textbooks must have several content qualifications, which include the completeness of the material, the breadth and depth of the material. about the material and the accuracy of the material. Textbooks also have advantages and disadvantages, such as textbooks which must contain core and basic skills to support successful learning.

Abstract

The Datok Laksamana Institute for Typical Malay Songket Weaving in Langkat Dusun V Plantation Village, Tanjung Pura Langkat District, has been revitalized since 1986 by the Government through training for development. Directional development explores local wisdom that has existed since the mulda of the Langkat sultanate around the 18th century. This type of qualitative descriptive research is a research method that utilizes qualitative data and is described in descriptive history. This type of qualitative descriptive research is often used to analyze events, phenomena, or situations socially. This type of qualitative descriptive research is a combination of descriptive and qualitative research. Qualitative descriptive research displays the results of the data as they are, without manipulation or other treatment. The institution empowers members of the local community, so Langkat's unique woven motifs have succeeded in identifying 144 beautiful woven motifs. These motifs are extracted from culture and natural raw materials with high artistic and philosophical values that have thrived in people's lives and are woven into woven motifs. This study of noble-valued weaving motifs is full of essential values and is a guide for the Langkat Malay community in carrying out noble life stages and tasks such as traditional wedding attire, respecting guests, circumcision events, and so on. Within the 144 motifs that are related to the meaning of a typical life value, there can be a model that is able to build a strong personality. In this study, three typical motifs will be discussed: teni grass, Diving duck, and Tepak Sirih. The meaning of the philosophy or value contained in each motif is different. The value of these motifs is very humane, so they remain relevant from time to time. The traditions of the people, with their natural environment interweaving traditions in various aspects of life, are fought for to be passed on to the next generation. The realization of the meaning of culture conveyed by Ki Hajar Dewantara is that culture requires values of struggle to be developed by an independent spirit. The struggle to preserve cultural values in the 21st century faces opportunities and challenges. Society is internally challenged by the arrival of a global culture with technology that enters the soul aspects of the young generation in an unlimited way. Opportunities are directed by the government to explore traditional values to be developed within the education system as a characteristic of the nation's character. Optimizing oneself to become a whole person with the uniqueness of each ethnicity to become a resilient world community is the ideal of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.
