Abstract

Mainly, visual learners learn best using their eye sight. This type of learners tends to be fast talkers. They also tend to have a difficulty with verbal instruction. Seeing and reading are reflected to be important for visual learners, for example handouts, pictures, tables, demonstrations, and mind maps are very helpful for them. Considering that learning English includes learning to read written passages, this articlefinds out the possible strategy to assist them improve their reading achievement. This is critical because empirical evidence shows that visual learner is excellent in learning visually, especially using lecture notes, textbooks, pictures, films, text illustration, chart, diagram, and other written text is the most useful way of learning. The teacher can focus their attention appropriately in order to help visual learner achieve success in the classroom. Strategy use is fundamental to help determine how and how well learners learn a second/foreign language. To solve the problem, meta-cognitive strategies are believed to be the most suitable to help them learn to read better. This is because meta-cognitive strategies take care of how learners regulate their learning intentionally. As a result, this is the authority of the teacher to teach them to become regulators of their learning to read and use them to cope with different reading tasks selectively and appropriately in a more flexible way according to their need. So, metacognitive strategy instructions (MSI) can help learners use suitable strategy to make them strategic readers. As a result, being able to control over their reading process, EFL learners are expected to use these strategies as resources to pursue the goal of reading activities in English classes as a personal interpretation or meaning making rather than confining their experience or learning to an understanding or acquisition of English linguistic knowledge only. 27visual students were grouped by conducting VAK Questionnaire. Then, all subjects were administered the pre-test and after getting MSI training they got post reading comprehension test. The results showed that therewas no statistically significant higher between the pre and post-test mean reading score of the visual EFL Indonesian students after being taught using Metacognitive Strategy Instruction, because the significance value was (p = .731/2 = .3655) and it was far above the significance value α < .05. It expressed that visual learning style did not predispose the step-up of reading skill after being trained with Metacognitive Strategy Instruction. Keywords:   Metacognitive Strategy Instruction, reading skill, visual learning style

Abstract

: Lake Tarusan Tourism Object always provides beautiful scenery, with cool air and a lovely lake. This condition indicates that there is a huge potential in the development of tourism to become an attraction for natural tourist destinations. Lake Tarusan should be a place frequented by tourists because of the potential for its natural beauty which is very charming. Presently, Lake Tarusan has not become a place that is often visited by domestic and foreign tourists. Lake Tarusan's problems include poorly maintained landscape conditions; various other facilities are not adequate as a tourist destination; neglect of public participation in applying the elements of Sapta Pesona as a tourist attraction. The purpose of this study is to identify the potential for natural attractions of Lake Tarusan. The research method used is descriptive analysis by conducting an inventory of data and tourism approaches. Primary data inventory was conducted through direct observation of the condition of the Lake Tarusan tourist attraction. Secondary data obtained through literature study of similar research in journals, maps and other sources. Identification of Tourism Destinations by taking a tourism approach to the 5 main elements of tourism: tourist attractions, facilities, infrastructure, transportation and hospitality. Further more data analysis used in this study descriptive qualitative to determine the natural potential and constraints that exist in Lake Tarusan as a tourist destination. The results of this analysis determine the direction of the development plan and indicates that the natural potential of Lake Tarusan is suitable as a natural tourist destination. As an attraction for tourism objects and the need to improve the quality of various supporting facilities as an effort to develop sustainable tourism objects.

Abstract

Kegiatan PKM melalui pelatihan belajar Bahasa Inggris menggunakan flash card test untuk anak usia dini saat new normal bertujuan melatih kemampuan otak kanan untuk mengingat gambar dan kata-kata, sehingga perbendaharaan kata dan kemampuan membaca anak dapat dilatih dan ditingkatkan sejak usia dini. Pelaksanaan kegiatan PKM ini dilaksanakan melalui metode pelatihan dan test di RA Boeh Hatee Rahil yang dipandu oleh dosen menggunakan assessment for learning, yang dilakukan selama pembelajaran berlangsung dan menjadi dasar untuk memperbaiki pembelajaran, sehingga memungkinkan guru dan peserta didik memainkan peran utama guna memperbaiki dan meningkatkan pembelajaran bagi anak usia dini. Metode flash card test diharapkan memiliki efektifitas pembelajaran yang membuat siswa termotivasi, menarik dan menyenangkan serta sesuai dengan target pembelajaran. Maka, penggunaan media flash card adalah metode yang efektif untuk meningkatkan kosa kata dan pemahaman Bahasa Inggris untuk anak usia dini. Berdasarkan hasil pelaksanaan kegiatan PKM melalui pelatihan belajar Bahasa Inggris menggunakan flash card test untuk anak usia dini saat new normal disimpulkan bahwa 1) kegiatan ini dapat mengembalikan motivasi belajar anak setelah berlangsungnya lock down di masa pandemi covid 19 sehingga dapat menghilangkan pola pembelajaran yang tidak menarik; 2) kegiatan pembelajaran yang dilakukan dalam pelatihan ini dapat membangkitkan tingkat kecerdasan dan minat belajar anak usia dini yang tinggi melalui penggunaan media pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris; dan 3) penggunaan flash card dapat menarik perhatian siswa karena adanya gambar dan warna yang membuat anak usia dini ingin mengetahui lebih banyak tentang kosa kata Bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat berupa pelatihan Bahasa Inggris komunikatif dengan bermain dan bernyanyi bagi sswa SD Negeri 15 Peusangan Kabupaten Bireuen bertujuan untuk meningkatkan minat dan hasil belajar siswa pada mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris dan menghilangkan persepsi bahwa Bahasa Inggris itu tidaklah sulit. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat melalui pelatihan Bahasa Inggris komunikatif dengan bermain dan bernyanyi bagi siswa SD Negeri 15 Peusangan Kabupaten Bireuen dilaksanakan sejak proposal diterima s.d proses evaluasi kegiatan yaitu 2-3 bulan dan akan menjadi program yang berkesinambungan, terhitung mulai November 2018 s.d Januari 2019. Adapun lokasi kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah di SD Negeri 15 Peusangan Kabupaten Bireuen. Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan PKM ini adalah pelatihan dan simulasi, melibatkan siswa yang berperan aktif dalam proses pembelajaran. Berdasarkan hasil pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat berupa pelatihan Bahasa Inggris komunikatif dengan bermain dan bernyanyi bagi siswa SD Negeri 15 Peusangan Kabupaten Bireuen, dapat disimpulkan bahwa: 1) kegiatan ini merupakan program pengabdian yang dibutuhkan masyarakat sebagai upaya pemecahan permasalahan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang selama ini dianggap membosankan; 2) kegiatan ini memiliki daya tarik tersendiri bagi peserta pelatihan, dikarenakan adanya penggunaan metode yang tepat dalam pengembangan pembelajaran; dan 3) hasil kegiatan pelatihan ini menunjukkan adanya peningkatan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris bagi peserta pelatihan sehingga perlu dukungan dari semua pihak.

Abstract

Education is the spearhead in achieving the progress and success of a nation and a State. The state must have a generation that is ready to manifest it. The Educators or teachers are the main keys in creating a discerning nation. There are extraordinary challenges that must be faced by the educators or teachers during the Covid 19 pandemic. However, this is not an obstacle in creating and producing Indonesia's golden generation. Online learning is a solution offered by the Government of Indonesia, where students learn from home and teachers work from home. In this new normal era, teachers are required to teach online. A variety of media platforms can be utilised in this situation, such as Google Classroom Platform; is one of the media that is very suitable for teachers to apply in the teaching and learning process. Through Google Classroom, teachers can provide material, learning videos, and modules, manage student assignments, exams, and check attendance. The advantage of learning online does not make students tired like offline activities, fun, and it can provide new experiences for them.

Abstract

Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) adalah salah satu mata kuliah wajib bagi mahasiswa FKIP Almuslim jurusan Bahasa Inggris semester V sebelum praktik mengajar di lapangan. Mengoptimalkan belajar bahasa Inggris pada mata kuliah TEFL adalah salah satu cara untuk mengasah kemampuan Bahasa Inggris dan kemampuan mengaplikasikan berbagai strategi pembelajaran dalam Bahasa Inggris yang segala informasinya dikemas dalam bahasa tersebut.. Salah satu cara untuk mengasah kemampuan mahasiswa tersebut adalah dengan memberikan fasilitas yang berinovasi dalam proses belajar mengajar yaitu E-learning. Seiring perkembangan teknologi yang semakin tinggi perananya dalam segala aspek maka E-learning juga ikut  memiliki peran yang luar biasa terhadap suatu keberhasilan dalam proses belajar mengajar dengan kata lain E-learning menjadi fasilitas dalam mengoptimalkan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris pada mata kuliahTEFL. Kata Kunci: TEFL, E-Learning

Abstract

The title of this Service Community Activity is the Training of English through the activity of making handy crafts from nonorganic wastes in elementary school students. The activity was done by given the training to the students to learn English vocabulary through the making of handy crafts from nonorganic wastes such as flower arrangement. The purpose of the training is to help the students in learning various English vocabularies. Through this training the students are expected to be able to mention and remember the English vocabulary related to the activity. For example, the students can pronounce the words such as: flower petals (kelopak bunga), leaves (daun), flower pistil (putik bunga), stalk (tangkai), cut out (menggunting), stringing (merangkai) and etc. This activity was held for one month starting from doing observation, preparing of the proposal, doing the training and ended by preparing the report. The activity and the training was held on January 2022 of the second week. During the training, the students were taught about the English vocabulary while aranging the flowers from the nonorganic waste. After doing the training, the result that can be found that the students were able to mention and pronounce the English vocabulary well and the students also could make and create the handy craft (flowers) from the nonorganic waste. Based on the result of the service community activity to the students of SDN 3 Muara Batu can be concluded that the training was done successfully.

Abstract

Abstract: Teachers Questioning Strategies to Promote Students Engagement in EFL Classroom: The case of Islamic Boarding Schools in Aceh. Objective: The present study aims to investigate the use of questioning strategies during classroom interaction. Methods: There were N=106 students, Aged 14-16 years as students at Islamic boarding schools in Aceh, and English teachers (N is equal to 5) participated in this study selected through purposive sampling, documentation, observation, and interview are triangulation of instruments. The data were analyzed by using the descriptive qualitative form by Marzanos Observational Protocol Sheet (2013). Findings: The findings revealed that teacher mostly employs questioning strategies to check the students knowledge and comprehension in the learning process by using many kinds of questions. Furthermore, when it happened to come to promoting childrens critical thinking, this strategy were ineffective because the questions were yes/no questions. Conclusion: it explicitly means that this strategy is effective and beneficial way to the students and teacher in the classroom interaction at school.Keywords: questioning strategies, Islamic boarding school, classroom interaction.Abstrak: Strategi Guru Bertanya Untuk Meningkatkan Keterlibatan Siswa Dalam Kelas Bahasa Inggris di Pesantren Aceh. Tujuan: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki penggunaan strategi bertanya selama interaksi kelas. Metode: Terdapat N=106 santri berusia 14-16 tahun yang merupakan siswa Pesantren di Aceh dan guru Bahasa Inggris (N sama dengan 5) berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini dipilih melalui purposive sampling. Data diperoleh dengan menggunakan dokumentasi, observasi dan wawancara . Data dianalisis menggunakan deskriptif kualitatif dengan mengadopsi teori Lembar Protokol Observasi Marzano (2013). Temuan: Hasil penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa sebagian besar guru menggunakan strategi bertanya untuk menguji pengetahuan dan pemahaman siswa dalam pembelajaran. Selanjutnya, dalam upaya meningkatkan kemampuan berkritis anak, strategi ini tidak efektif karena berupa pertanyaan ya/tidak. Abstract

Pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk melatih keterampilan Guru-Guru PAUD dalam meningkatkan kemampuan high order thinking dalam mengmbangkan literasi membaca dalam penggunaan APE melalui learning community menuju caring community. Pengabdian masyarakat ini menggunakan rancangan berbasis Lesson Study yang dilakukan untuk Guru-Guru PAUD di Kabupaten Bireuen. Metode pengambilan data pada pelatihan ini adalah dengan menggunakan observasi, wawancara dan dokumentasi. Ada 3 (Tiga) Tahapan dalam pelatihan ini yaitu: (1) menyusun RPPH yang berbasis lesson study (2) para peserta pelatihan melakukan demonstrasi sesuai dengan RPPH yang telah disusun (3) tahap refleksi dimana para peserta pelatihan setelah melakukan demonstrasi pembelajaran melakukan tahap refleksi. Para peserta pelatihan begitu antusias dalam mengikuti pelatihan dimulai dari hari pertama hingga hari terakhir pelaksanaan kegiatan tentang apa itu lesson study dan mengapa lesson study itu perlu untuk diterapkan dalam pembelajaran Anak Usia Dini.
