Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the pre-service teachers’ performance in the Field Experience Program after taking a microteaching class. The sample of this study was ten (10) pre-service teachers. The data collected were taken from pre-service teachers’ report books. The results of this study showed that microteaching helped the pre-service teachers in improving and achieving a good teaching performance in classroom during their Field Experience Program. In addition, after the pre-service teachers had a microteaching class, they were able to use appropriate learning methods and classroom management in order to achieve a better performance in the Program. It can be concluded that the microteaching class has played a role to the pre-service teachers in enhancing their teaching performance in the Field Experience Program.

Abstract

Interaction is one of the important activities in language teaching learning process. The teacher needs approach and technique that can make the students creative, interactive and more enthusiastic in speaking classroom. One of the interactive techniques is a small group work. Therefore, the researcher adapted small group work technique. The purposes of the study are to find out the problems faced by the students in speaking and to find out that teaching speaking by using small group will be effective in solving the problems faced by students. The method which was used in this study was quantitative experimental research. The population of this study at the first grade students of SMAN 1 Krueng Barona Jaya. The researcher used random sample. The researcher took two classes, those are X-IA3 and X-IA2. The number of sample of this research are 14 students for each class. Class X-IA3 was experimental class and class X-IA2 was as control class. The data was analyzed by using statistical formula. The problems that are generally faced by students in speaking skill are their inability in expressing their idea and afraid of making mistake. The result shows that interactive language teaching by using small group work is very effective in improving student’s speaking skill . It is based on the result of t-score which is higher than t-table. The value of the t-table list found =2.15 and t-score = 3.04. It means the hypothesis can be accepted. It indicates that the first grade students of SMA 1 Krueng Barona Jaya who are taught speaking by using small group work get higher score than the students who are taught without using small group work. Based on the result of the study, the researcher suggests to use small group technique in teaching speaking because it can increase the students' achievement in speaking skill.

Abstract

This article portrays the fundamental paradigm of language, English in this case, which has transformed from a traditional point of view to a functional one. Dealing with the mandate of the curriculum, both of primary education and tertiary education curriculum, that language learning does not rely simply on patterns, pronunciation, and vocabulary. However, language learning is a learning process by involving the effort in enabling students to strengthen four English skills, listening speaking reading and writing. Though, in this era, communicative competence has been the ultimate goal of language teaching orientation (Savignon, 2017). Changing the mindset of language is not just learning the rules, but also how to change with the mindset that learning language is to be able to actualize students and enable them to use language communicatively and contextually. This view is in line with the hermeneutics philosophical view. It sees language learning as being able to understand meaning and interpret meaning based on context and situation. Language teachers are expected to understand those differences through managing teaching learning process in traditional view and functional view.

Abstract

This article proposes about the nature of language and the nature of education in frame of language education policy in Indonesia. Its discussion is intended to be one of considerations in how to design and formulate some policies in education, especially language education policy in the era of the industrial revolution 4.0. The primary discussion is started by presenting some critical expert views on the nature of language along with its relationship to the nature of education in general. The understanding on both of these terms will lead to the appropriate decision on the future language education policy. Comprehensive understanding on each of the terms enables readers, stakeholders, teacher practitioners, and government to be open-minded to decide the future steps in designing and formulating the education policy especially to language education policy. The developed analysis will be based on the educational phenomenon which happenned in all regions both local and national areas.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine whether there is a significant effect on improving students' mathematical problem solving abilities by using Group Investigation learning model. This was experimental research with quasi-experimental and the research design was one-pretest posttest design. The sample in this study was the students of class IX SMP Negeri 1 KutaBaro Aceh Besar. The data collection techniques were test and non test, observation and documentation. The used instruments were test, questionnaires and observation sheets. The analysis technique was quantitative and descriptive data. The result of this research are (1) the mean of the improvement of students’ mathematical problem solving abilities is 0.30, it is in the medium category, (2) the average of students' response to group investigation model is 3.75 with good criteria, and (3) the significant between study group investigation model and improvement of students' mathematical problem solving ability. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap peningkatan kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis siswa dengan menggunakan model pembelajaran Group Investigation.Bentuk penelitian adalah eksperimen dengan pendekantan kuasi eksperimen dan desain penelitian one group pretest posttest design.Sampel dalam penelitian adalah siswa kelas IX SMP Negeri 1 Kuta Baro Aceh Besar.Teknik pengumpulan data adalah tes dan non tes, observasi serta dokumentasi.Instrumen yang digunakan soal tes, angket dan lembar observasi.Teknik analisis yaitu data kuantitatif dan deskriptif.Hasil temuan dalam penelitian adalah (1) rerata peningkatan kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis siswa adalah 0,30 berada pada kategori sedang, (2) rerata respon siswa terhadap model pembelajaran group investigation adalah 3,75 dengan kriteria baik, dan (3) terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan antara model pembelajaran group investigationdengan peningkatan kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis siswa. Abstract

ABSTRAKPengajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk pelajar usia dini sangat penting pada era globalisasi. Kecakapan berbahasa Inggris membantu pelajar dalam segala sendi kehidupan, baik sebagai sarana komunikasi, perdagangan, sosial budaya, hiburan, ilmu pengetahuan, pendidikan, dan teknologi. Literasi dan keterampilan berbahasa Inggris dengan baik dan lancar harus dimulai dari usia dini. Namun, membangkitkan motivasi pelajar usia dini bukanlah hal mudah. Apalagi memperkenalkan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing di lingkungan nya, tentunya membutuhkan teknik pengajaran yang mampu menarik atensi pelajar. Mengeksplorasi pembelajaran yang tidak berfokus di kelas dapat menjadi alternatif bagi pelajar yaitu dengan mengeksplorasi bahan belajar yang ada disekitar pelajar atau dikenal dengan Linguistic Landscapes (LLs). Kegiatan belajar terdiri dari: pengenalan (Introductory), eksplorasi terbimbing (Guided-exploration), pasca analisis (Post-analysis), dan kegiatan menjembatani (Bridging activities) (Solmaz, 2021). Untuk melihat penerapan dan bagaimana proses pembelajaran tersebut, peneliti melakukan kegiatan eksplorasi terhadap pelajar usia dini dengan rentang umur 7-12 tahun. 12 dari 32 pelajar dini secara random terpilih sebagai sampel studi pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini. Studi ini berkolaborasi dengan mahasiswa calon guru dengan mengumpulkan data observasi hasil penerapan pendekatan LLs dalam interaksi belajar bersama pelajar usia dini. Hasil studi ini memperlihatkan bahwa (1) keberadaan LL mampu meningkatkan motivasi pelajar usia dini; (2) interaksi selama proses belajar sangat baik; (3) pelajar usia dini mampu memamfaatkan lingkungan sekitar sebagai sumber belajar otentik. Kata kunci: lanskap linguistic; pengajaran bahasa inggris; pelajar usia dini ABSTRACTTeaching English to young learners is very important in this era of globalization. Proficiency in English helps students in all aspects of life, both as a means of communication, trade, socio-culture, entertainment, science, education, and technology. Good and fluent English literacy and skills considerably start at an early age. However, raising the motivation of early childhood students is not an easy task. Moreover, introducing English as a foreign language in their environment, of course, requires teaching techniques that are able to attract the attention of students. Exploring learning that is not focused in the classroom can be an alternative for students, namely by exploring learning materials that are around students or known as Linguistic Landscapes (LLs). Learning activities consist of: Introduction, Guided-exploration Post-analysis, and Bridging activities (Solmaz, 2021). To see the implementation and how the learning process is, the researchers conducted exploration activities for early childhood students with an age range of 7-12 years. 12 out of 32 early childhood students were randomly selected as the sample for this community engagement study. This study collaborated with student teacher candidates by collecting observational data on the results of applying the LLs approach in learning interactions with early childhood students. The results of this study showed that (1) the existence of LL can increase the motivation of early childhood students; (2) the interaction during the learning process is very good; (3) early childhood students are able to take advantage of the surrounding environment as an authentic learning resource Keywords: linguistic landscapes; teaching english; young learners.

Abstract

ABSTRAKKurangnya kegiatan yang bermakna membuat anak-anak tidak terkontrol dalam menggunakan gadget. Untuk itu perlu adanya kegiatan bermakna sebagai upaya mengalihkan perhatian mereka terhadap kecendrungan memakai gadget. Oleh karena itu, tujuan dari pengabdian ini adalah untuk mengadakan berbagai kegiatan literasi dan numerasi sehingga dapat meminimalisir kebiasaan anak-anak dalam menggunakan gadget setiap harinya di Desa Ateuk Lampeuot. Metode pelaksanaan kegiatan adalah dalam bentuk bimbingan belajar. Anak-anak dibimbing dan didampingi dalam pelaksanaan setiap kegiatan selama 1 jam setiap harinya. Kegiatan yang dilakukan dalam bentuk pengabdian ini berupa bimbingan belajar yang mengajarkan kreatifitas, membaca, menulis, menggambar, berhitung dan belajar Bahasa Inggris. Hasil dari kegiatan ini adalah anak-anak menjadi jarang menggunakan gadget serta sangat bersemangat dalam mengikuti berbagai program literasi numerasi yang diberikan. Hal ini terlihat dari partisipasi aktif setiap anak saat kegiatan berlangsung. Oleh karena itu sangat diperlukan keberlanjutan dari kegiatan bermakna untuk meningkatkan literasi numerasi anak-anak di desa Ateuk Lampeuot. Kata kunci: literasi; numerasi; gadget. ABSTRACTThe lack of meaningful activities makes children uncontrollable in using gadgets. For this reason, it is necessary to have meaningful activities as an effort to divert their attention to the tendency of using gadgets. Therefore, the purpose of this community service is to hold various literacy and numeracy activities so as to minimize the children's habit of using gadgets every day in Ateuk Lampeuot Village. The method of implementing these activities is in the form of tutoring. School children are guided and accompanied in the implementation of each activity which lasts for 1 hour every day. Activities carried out in this community service are in the form of teaching creativity, reading, writing, drawing, numeracy and learning English. The result of this activity is that the children rarely use gadgets and become very enthusiastic in participating in the various numeracy and literacy programs provided. This can be seen from the active participation of each child during the activity. Therefore, it is very necessary to carry out meaningful activities to improve the numeracy and literacy of children in Ateuk Lampeuot village. Keywords: literacy; numeracy; gadget.

Abstract

This article provides a brief discussion of the four topics related to the Communicative Approach (CA) theme in English language teaching and its implication for teachers’ competence and environmental support system. The communicative approach, communicative competence, CA’s implication on language teaching and teacher’s competence, and the learning environment support are connected in a brief overview. CA, or familiarized with communicative language teaching terminology, was proposed by Savignon& Berns in the late 1960s, and it developed in the mid of 1970s with the popular name of CA (communicative approach). The first coin of CA is how it closely engages in the process of English language teaching. The goal is to prepare English language learners to be highly competent in teaching and communicating skills to face the global era. Students are able to develop their four language teaching skills. A conducive and supportive learning environment is the support system in applying CA to support the four language skills. As a result, CA’s implication in language teaching, particularly English, is to enhance language learners’ communicative competencies.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the students’ obstacles in understanding reading descriptive text since there were many problems that the students encounter in understanding reading text. The method used in this study was a descriptive quantitative through test and questionnaire as data collection instruments.  The questionnaire consisted of items to gain the students’ responses towards 3 categories of students’ difficulties factors in reading, namely: learners’ background, teaching technique, and learners’ environment. Seventeen first-grade students in a senior high school in Aceh Besar were involved as participants. The result of students’ reading comprehension test showed that 86,6 % of students were not able to identify references in the text, and 70,6 % of students found difficulty in making inferences in the text. The result of the questionnaire further showed that 71,9% of students agreed toward a lack of interest in reading descriptive text, and 73,5% of students agreed that students’ background knowledge affects their reading comprehension, especially in reading descriptive text. It can be concluded that most of the students found difficulty in identifying and making references in the text, whereas the questionnaire result showed that most of the students lack of background knowledge and interest in reading descriptive text

Abstract

This research was descriptive research using the survey method. This research was conducted at the Public Senior High School, Aceh Besar, Aceh in 2019. The research subjects were 135 students of class X SMAN in Aceh Besar. The sampling technique was the total sampling technique. Data collection was done through test techniques. The test technique was carried out to measure the achievement of conceptual abilities. The test instrument used was multiple choice taken from ecosystem material. The data analysis used was inferential analysis to determine the difference in the achievement of students' conceptual knowledge in schools with the accommodated variables, namely based on gender. The results obtained indicate that the results of the study obtained a value of p = 0.000 (p 0.05), so there is a significant difference between the gender of female and male students. The average value of the achievement of conceptual knowledge of students of class X IPA SMA Negeri in Aceh Besar where the female students were 8,96 and male students were 4.36. It can be concluded that the conceptual knowledge of female students is higher than male students.
