Abstract

The use of technology and character building for students is an effort that can be made to improve the quality of education. Interactive Electronic Textbooks Based (IETB) that are integrated with Islamic values are able to empower students' brain abilities to think critically, creatively, and practice problem solving skills presented by teachers in class, so that learning objectives can be achieved properly. The purpose of this study is to analyze the development of IETB based on the Kvisoft Flipbook Maker application that integrates Islamic values in learning. The methods used in this research are field studies and literature studies. The research subjects were the principal, teachers and students of class XI majoring in science at SMA IT Bina Ilmi Palembang. Literature study was conducted by collecting various relevant sources. Meanwhile, the field study was obtained by going directly to the research location by interviewing the principal and class XI biology teacher as well as distributing needs questionnaires and conducting online learning observations. Based on a literature study, IETB based on the Kvisoft Flipbook Maker application can help students improve creative thinking skills and the integration of Islamic values in learning materials can improve critical thinking skills. The results of the field study found that SMA IT Bina Ilmi Palembang needed IETB to help teachers and students maximize learning and instill Islamic values according to the IISN curriculum used. This product can not only be used in Integrated Islamic Schools but can also be used in other Islamic based schools throughout Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate how initiating acts affect refusal strategies realization. The subjects were 45 English Education Program students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang. The study used Discourse Completion Task (DCT) which consisted of 12 situations covering four initiating acts; suggestion, request, offer, and invitations, and the classification of refusal strategy by Beebe et al was also used to categorize refusal strategies realized. The results showed that initiating acts were not insensitive towards the use of direct strategy. However, it has an impact on the realization of indirect strategies and adjuncts. It was also found that both initiating acts and the social status of interlocutors play an important role in producing refusal utterances. Hence, it is highly suggested to introduce initiating acts and social status factors to EFL learners so that they would be able to produce an appropriate refusal depending on the context.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of learning quality, tutor quality and motivation both jointly and partially on student achievement at the Palembang Open University (Pokjar Pangkalan Lampam - Tulung Selapan. The research approach is quantitative research with associative research type. The population of this study is 186. students. The sampling method for probability with the Stratified Random Sampling method. The sample of this study was calculated using the Slovin formula with an error rate of 10%, the number of samples was 65 students as respondents. The first sample was tested using the Instrument Validity Test and the Instrument Reliability Test. The analysis model used in this study is multiple linear regression analysis. The regression calculation can be Y = -1.649 + 0.567X1 + 0.351X2 + 0.457X3. Interpretation of the multiple regression equation regarding the influence of the Learning Quality Variables (X1), Tutor Quality (X2) and Learning Motivation (X3), on Student Learning Achievement (Y). The results of the calculation of the three coefficients of the independent variable are positive, this indicates a positive linear relationship (unidirectional), meaning that the quality of learning, quality of tutors and learning motivation, the better, the better the student achievement. Obtained a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.712, with a level of closeness between variables of 0.712 which is in the interpretation of the correlation value (0.60-0.799) means that the relationship between the two variables is significant and the level of closeness is strong. The coefficient of determination value R2 = 0.507, which means that the variables of Learning Quality, Tutor Quality, and Learning Motivation are able to explain the Student Learning Achievement Variables of 0.507 or 50.7%, while the remaining 49.3% is explained by other factors not examined.

This also has an impact on biology lessons at Xaverius High School Lubuklinggau. This study aims to determine the perception of the implementation of online learning in biology lessons and determine the factors that influence it. Methods: this research uses descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques using observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation which are then analyzed by technical analysis of Miles & Huberman. The research subjects were biology teachers and all students of grades X, XI, and XII science at Xaverius High School Lubuklinggau. Results: the implementation of learning in biology lessons that have been carried out at Xaverius Lubuklinggau High School there are planning, implementation and evaluation activities as well as face-to-face learning, but in the implementation there are factors that influence, namely the material cannot be explained, the response of class X students is less active, supervision of the assessment, the ability of teachers to use various educational applications, difficulty in assessing the character of students, some students do not understand the material provided, and the learning environment. Conclusion. The implementation of online learning that is applied there are still planning, implementation and evaluation activities, but in the implementation there are several factors that influence both supporting and inhibiting factors.

Abstract

Abstract: The facts and phenomenon that most of senior high school students still encounter or face problems in understanding and answering the questions in reading texts led the researchers to conduct this quasi-experimental research, in line with teaching reading narrative through Inking Your Thinking strategy. This research is aimed at figuring out whether or not there is any significant difference in the tenth grade students’ reading comprehension achievements at SMA Negeri 2 Prabumulih among those who are taught by using Inking Your Thinking strategy and those who are not. To collect the data and to meet the objectives, the researchers used two kinds of tests (i.e. pretest and posttest) which were given to 62 students. To analyze the data, the researchers used T-test. The results of the difference analyses on experimental and control groups by using independent sample t-test showed that t-obtained was 4.839 greater than t-table which was 1.671 at the significant level p<0.05 in two tailed testing with df=60. It means that there was significant difference in students’ reading comprehension achievements among those who are taught by using Inking Your Thinking strategy and those who are not. In conclusion, Inking Your Thinking strategy can improve students’ reading comprehension achievements. Keywords: inking your thinking strategy, reading comprehension, narrative text

Abstract

The practice of giving a speech or presentation in front of the class is a big challenge for students in English education majors. Students feel unable to speak directly or impromptu in English speech lectures. Thus, this study aimed to find out what were the problem factors that hinder students from practicing impromptu speech in classes. Samples in this study were the fifth-semester students in the academic year 2022/2023 majoring in English education at the University of Muhammadiyah Palembang. The study was qualitative and quantitative with a mixed-method approach. The research design utilized was a descriptive approach. The instruments used in this study were questionnaires and interviews. Twenty samples of students responded to the questionnaires and 12 of them were selected for further interview. Results of the interview and questionnaire showed most students did not have the confidence to give an impromptu English speech in the public because of the anxiety factor. Students were shocked and unable to think properly when presenting the speech without preparation. Therefore, students were hard to develop words into sentences, even the prepared sentences were lost as a result of that anxiety.
