Abstract

This essay reviews literature on the theoretical views underlying the selection of activities for classrooms of English literature teaching in EFL context. The review include: 1) literary criticisms, 2) constructivism, and 3) research on students perceptions of classroom activities. One literary criticism, reader-response, is beheld to pose a similar spirit to that of the constructivist mode of teaching. Both reader-response and constructivist teaching perspectives require the teaching of English literature to focus on the students. This requires giving attention to the students ideology, horizon of expectation, and “malumat sabiqoh” (background knowledge) in order to situate the students to actively generate their own meanings, understanding, or knowledge of given literary works offered as class materials. Since the students personal ideology, horizon of expectation, and malumat sabiqoh are influenced or the socio-culture undergirding every student, the teaching of English literature needs to take into account such socio-cultural properties. Another point reviewed is the students perceptions of classroom activities. Consideration of combining the top-down mode of thinking, as offered by the reader-response and constructivism, and bottom-up mode of thinking, as offered by research on students perceptions of classroom activities, constitute the ending part of this essay.

Abstract

The present paper outlines a self introspective undertaking germane to the issue of rhetorical awareness. This issue is imbricated in the realm of academic writing in English (particularly, English as a foreign language). As a self retrospective endeavor, the paper starts with some personal account undergirding the writing of the present paper. Some self delineation teasing out the context for the rhetorical awareness will also be presented. Some attempts to read the main issue raised in the paper against the backdrop of the wider context (within the gamut of ELT) will conclude the paper.

Abstract

This essay argues that Standard English is one among the varieties of English. Although speaking Standard English, as is the case with speaking other languages or varieties claimed to be the standard, might allow the speakers to gain particular privileges, it should not be readily surmised that this variety is more quality than the rest; difference does not necessarily mean difference in quality. As such, Honey’s propagation that Standard English is more quality-thus warrants more attention-should be read on guard. This essay outlines whom Honey refers to as the enemies of Standard English. Subsequent to the outline, the essay presents points disclosing Honey’s shaky argument. Critical presentation, against the backdrop of Honey’s argumentation, of issues about nonnative speakers of English (if they are parties having the potential to corrupt English) will conclude the article.

Abstract

Abstract: Genre analyses and contrastive rhetoric studies have dealt with quite a number of genres of writing. However, genre analysts and contrastive rhetoric researchers have not carried out adequate analyses of doctoral prospectuses. This paper will, subsequently, address this issue by analyzing a genre of texts of doctoral prospectuses. The analysis will be focused on the sub-genre of “Background of the Study” of the prospectuses. Limitations of accessibility, however, have led this study to only focus on analyzing fourteen doctoral prospectuses written in English by Indonesian students of EFL accessible from the Graduate Program, State University of Malang, Indonesia. This situation suggests that the present study is preliminary. Preliminary, notwithstanding, the study will contribute to filling the gap of the under-researched issue of doctoral studies in Indonesia, particularly, those pertinent to the area of ELT. The analysis shows a tendency that the texts of Background of the Study do not show research spaces. Relevant to this, the article provides an interpretive explanation of the possible factors attributable to this issue.

Abstract

The present study, a part of a larger project, deals with the under-researched (sub) genre of curriculum vitae (CV) of theses written in English by Indonesian students of English as a foreign language (EFL). The corpus was composed of CV of 40 theses obtainable from the Graduate Library, Graduate Program, Universitas Negeri Malang (State University of Malang), Indonesia. In a categorical structure, the CVs exhibit four main issues: personal information about age and familial origin, academic information pertaining to educational backgrounds, work information, and another piece of personal information, i.e., family. Central to the findings is that the CVs allude to the notion of celebration with narcissistic expressions.

Abstract

As an important part of teacher professional development, a reflective practice started to flourish in the 1980s. Along with it, many scholars have researched reflective practice in various fields, one of which is English Language Teaching. The present study explores reflective practice by teacher educators in a doctoral program, focusing on how they reflect on the journey of planning their lessons ranging from their earliest teaching years up to their future hope. Narrative inquiry with a multiple case study design is employed in this study. The data in this study, which included both narrative and non-narrative data, are collected by using narrative frames and interviews. The data are then coded and analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of the study show how learning from experience in lesson planning helps teacher educators improve their teaching performance.

Abstract

Abstract: Teaching practicum is one of the most fundamental and crucial stages in the teacher preparation program. The pre-service teacher readiness can be developed to become a qualified future teacher. This descriptive qualitative study is aimed to find the challenges and expectations of pre-service English teachers, mentor teachers, university supervisor, and the head of the teaching practice program. The findings indicated that pre-service teachers are challenged to improve their classroom management, strategies, and methods of teaching. The pre-service teachers, mentor teachers, and university supervisor are expected to gain benefits and successful school-university partnership.Abstrak: Praktik mengajar adalah salah satu tahap yang paling penting dan berpengaruh dalam program persiapan guru. Kesiapan praktikan dapat dikembangkan untuk menjadi guru masa depan yang berkualitas. Penelitian deskriptif kualitatif ini bertujuan untuk menemukan tantangan dan ekspektasi praktikan bahasa Inggris, guru pamong, dosen pembimbing, dan kepala program praktik mengajar. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa praktikan ditantang untuk meningkatkan manajemen kelas, strategi, dan metode pengajaran mereka. Para praktikan, guru pamong, dan dosen pembimbing diharapkan mendapatkan manfaat dan hubungan sekolah-universitas yang berhasil.

Abstract

This study examines students’ interactions with the teacher’s feedback in an online course on paragraph writing at higher education in Indonesia. The instructional moves, interactional approach, and students’ perceived usefulness of the feedback were investigated. Through a discourse analysis framework, 355 comments on discussion posts from five students in four meetings were analyzed. The Learning Analytics (LA) data correlated with semi-structured interviews were employed to obtain the students’ perceived usefulness of teacher feedback for revision. The semi-structured interview was done with six students. The findings revealed that the teacher enacted fifteen moves to handle social interaction in online feedback from directive to dialogic categories. These moves are employed to create knowledge-building and solidarity for pedagogical and interactional goals, particularly. These are shown by the relation between LA and the students’ perceptions of the feedback for writing revision. Therefore, such findings highlight the (de)merits of directive-dialogic interactions in online written feedback and LA data to improve teaching and learning.

Abstract

Abstract: Move and step are components that can provide effective contribution to overall communicative purpose in research article. This study aims to investigate the moves and steps in 48 abstracts publication from cross-disciplinary study under UM journal website. The design of this study is qualitative research. Swales et.al (2014) and Hyland’s (2000) models are used to identify moves and steps occurrence. The result shows that the majority of abstracts use M3 (46 abstracts), M4 (44 abstracts), M2 (40 abstracts). Authors mostly apply step 1 in M2 (40 times), step 1 in M4 (42 times), and step 3 in M3 (35 times).Abstrak: Moves dan Steps adalah komponen yang dapat memberikan kontribusi efektif untuk keseluruhan tujuan komunikasi dalam artikel penelitian. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki langkah-langkah dan langkah-langkah dalam 48 publikasi abstrak dari studi lintas disiplin di situs web jurnal UM. Desain penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif. Model Swales et.al (2014) dan Hyland (2000) digunakan untuk mengidentifikasi keberadaan moves dan steps. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa mayoritas abstrak menggunakan M3 (46 abstrak), M4 (44 abstrak), M2 (40 abstrak). Penulis kebanyakan menerapkan step 1 di M2 (40 kali), step 1 di M4 (42 kali), dan step 3 di M3 (35 kali).

Abstract

Touching into the gender differences between males and females in expressing the use of exaggeration expressions, this study analyzes the relevant data using the LIWC tool, the HIP method, and the deficit and difference theories. This study found that in relation to the gender stereotypes, both males and females speak differently, yet also demonstrate similarities. Both the male and female subjects express emotions equally in the language production; yet, the negative emotions are dominated by the males, and the positive emotions are dominated by the females. The difference of emotion productions influences the differences in the males’ production of exaggeration expressions, such as empty adjectives, italic expressions, and hyperbole by the female subjects.
