Abstract

Synthesis of Glycerol carbonate from glycerol and urea using limestone as a catalyst has been conducted. This study aims to make glycerol carbonate from glycerol and urea by utilizing scattered natural limestone widespread in Southeast Sulawesi as a catalyst source. The catalyst was obtained from the calcination of natural limestone to decompose CaCO3 to CaO. This condition added to glycerol and urea to test the catalyst activity. Synthesis of glycerol carbonate was carried out through the carbamoylation reaction of glycerol with urea. The advantage of this method is the reaction carried out with free solvents and running in ambient pressure (1 atm). The stages of catalyst testing in the reaction of glycerol carbonate formation were carried out by reacting glycerol, urea, and calcined limestone  with  1: 1 substrate mole ratio with a catalyst concentration of 5% mass over glycerol. Characterization used was Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and supported by Gas Chromatography (GC) data. Optimization catalysis reaction was obtained at a temperature of 140oC for 4 hours and  using a catalyst mole ratio to 5% substrate

Abstract

The presence of scale is a serious problem in the petroleum industry, and some efforts should be made to control scale formation. Oligosuccinimide (OSI) is an oligomer with several repeating units of succinimide. The structure of the OSI main chain and end groups has never been comprehensively analyzed. Meanwhile, OSI is potentially a scale inhibitor due to chelating properties, high polarity, and high solubility. This study investigates the molecular structure of oligosuccinimide, focusing on the main chain and end groups. Synthesis was carried out by thermal condensation between maleic anhydride and ammonium carbonate using a 1H and 13C NMR spectroscope equipped with Distortionless Enhancement by Polarization Transfer 135, Heteronuclear Multiple Quantum Coherence, and Single Quantum Coherence. The NMR analysis results detected the presence of the main chain and several synthesized OSI end groups, such as the amino, succinimide, and maleimide end groups. However, the dicarboxylic acid end group and other irregular structures, as in polysuccinimide (various synthesis methods), were not identified. It confirmed that our thermal condensation method produced OSI with less irregular structures than previous methods. Evaluation of OSI as CaCO3 and CaSO4 scales inhibitor showed reasonably good performance in very small concentrations. The inhibition efficiency was 73.20% for the CaCO3 scale with 10 mg.L-1 and 55.29% for the CaSO4 scale with 10 mg.L-1 inhibitor concentration. Analysis of thermal stability informed OSI has good thermal stability because it started to be degraded at 353.38 °C.

Abstract

Chemistry is not merely a science that only studies theory in class. Chemistry learning requires practical or experimental activities to observe and directly apply chemical concepts during face-to-face meetings in class. Meanwhile, the unavailability of laboratory facilities is one of the factors in not carrying out chemistry practice. This causes students difficulties in understanding the concept of chemistry as a whole and can potentially reduce learning motivation. This public service activity aims to implement the Hyperchem software for teachers and students of SMA Negeri 1 Mawasangka Timur as an alternative solution for chemistry labs in the form of electronic labs. The chemical topics selected and considered suitable for this type of practice were the structure and properties of chemical compounds. This activity is carried out in the form of a workshop. Workshop materials use lectures, simulations, discussions, and question-and-answer models. The activity's results showed the workshop participants' enthusiasm to use the Hyperchem software as a chemistry lab media. This is reflected in the evaluation of the workshop implementation, which is carried out by assessing the response of the workshop participants based on indicators of relevance, the ability of the presenters, ease of use, availability, and usefulness of the Hyperchem software. The evaluation results show that the workshop and the implementation of the Hyperchem software as an electronic practice media for visualizing the structure and properties of chemical compounds received a positive response from the workshop participants.

Abstract

The fruit of Melothria scabra Naudin is traditionally used by natives of South East Sulawesi and has economic values in the local markets. Nonetheless, little scientific information was gained from this plant to support its development for nutraceutical and pharmaceutical aspects. This study aimed to investigate the phytochemicals contained in the ethanol extract and organic fractions (methanol, ethyl acetate, and hexane) of the fruits using specific reagents and an LC-MS/MS analysis, as well as to evaluate their total phenolics, total flavonoids, and DPPH radical scavenging activity using a dot-blot staining and spectrophotometric assays. Results showed that the fruits of M. scabra contained alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, terpenoids, and saponins. Six compounds were successfully identified from the ethanol extract of the fruits for the first time that is D-1-[(3-carboxypropyl)amino]-1-deoxyfructose (1), fructose-C3H5NO (2), valine (3), 1β, 3α, 9β-trihydroxyeudesma-5,11(13)-dien-12-oic acid (4), Cucurbitacin B-2-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-β-D-glucopyranoside (5), and 2-heptyl-3-hydroxy-4(H)-quinolone (6). Total phenolics in the extract and organic fractions were in the range of 54.2 ± 2.4 to 259.1 ± 8.4 mg GAE/g, while total flavonoids were in the range of 1.6 ± 0.2 to 22.4 ± 0.2 mg QE/g. The ethanol extract and its organic fractions (methanol and ethyl acetate) were potent radical scavengers with SC50 values ranging from 20.7 to 37.5 µg/mL when compared with ascorbic acid, gallic acid, and quercetin (SC50 of 2.8 to 9.4 µg/mL). This study concludes that M. scabra fruits could be developed as a source of natural antioxidant agents for nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals purposes.
