Abstract

Macromineral is one component of a nutrient that has an important role in the growth, health, production,reproduction and immune system of animals. Ruminants need makromineral such as Ca, P, Mg, K, Na , Cl and S. Mineral needs of ruminant affected by several factors such as their age, pregnancy and lactation status.Mineral deficiency can cause disturbances in reproduction ruminant. Ca and P have direct influence while Mg, K, Na, Cl and S acted indirectly on reproductive function. A complete understanding of the role macromineral on ruminant reproductive function is indispensable for the prevention of their reproductive disorders due toimproper feeding minerals.

Abstract

Research of interest marine algae and seagrasses have been renewed, because they are considered to be promising resources of functional ingredients in the development of novel products. Fucoidans are a class of fucose-rich sulfated carbohydrates found in brown marine algae and echinoderms, and more recently identified in seagrasses. Chemical compositions of most fucoidans are complex, mainly being composed of fucose and sulfate. They also contain other monosaccharides like mannose, galactose, glucose, xylose and uronic acids, even acetyl groups and protein and it’s have potential therapeutic properties, including anti-viral activity. Currently, fucoidans are available for use in therapeutic and dietary supplements for inclusion in pet, livestock and aquaculture feed supplements. This review summarizes experimental evidence indicating that Fucoidan can improve the quality of feed ingredients for livestock, pets and aquaculture to improve health.

Abstract

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease of global concern, and is caused by pathogenic serovar Leptospira interrogans. Canine Leptospirososis is widespread worldwide, dogs can act as incidental hosts or maintenance hosts for various serovars. The purpose of this research was to identify leptospire serovars that infect healthy and suspected leptospirosis dogs in Yogyakarta. A total of 56 dogs (36 healthy dogs and 20 suspect leptospirosis dogs) sera were taken from cephalica vein as much as 3 ml. Sera were examined for leptospirosis with Microscopic Aglutination Test (MAT) which conducted at the Research Center for Veterinary Science, Bogor. Microscopic Aglutination Test carried out on various Leptospire serovar, namely: Ichterohaemorrhagiae, Javanica, Celledoni, Ballum, Pyogenes, Cynopeteri, Rachmati, Australis, Pomona, Canicola, Grippotyphosa, Bataviae, Hardjo, and Tarrasovi. The results showed that Celledoni serovars infected 25% of healthy dogs and 5% of suspect leptospirosis dogs, Javanica serovar infected 19% of healthy dogs, Bataviae serovars infected 15% of suspect leptospirosis dogs, Grippotyphosa serovar infected 11% of healthy dogs, Tarrasovi serovar infected 10% of suspect leptospirosis dogs, serovars Cynopteri infects 5% of healthy dogs and 5% of suspect leptospirosis dogs, serovar Pyrogenes infects 5% of healthy dogs and 5% of suspect leptospirosis dogs, and serovar Rachmati infects 5% of suspect leptospirosis dogs. Seven healthy dogs (19%) and 2 suspect leptospirosis dogs (10%) were infected with more than 2 leptospire serovars. From the results of this study it can be concluded that Celledoni serovar of Leptospira interrogans infection causes subclinical leptospirosis, while Bataviae serovar infection causes clinical leptospirosis in dogs in Yogyakarta.

Abstract

Bovine ephemeral fever (atau 3-day sickness) adalah penyakit demam akut pada sapi dan kerbau yang disebabkan oleh Ephemerovirus dari keluarga rhabdoviridae dan ditularkan oleh vektor arthropoda. Penyakit tersebut biasa terjadi di daerah tropis dan subtropis. Dalam banyak kasus, dampak utamanya adalah pada penurunan produktivitas, produksi susu, kondisi tubuh, gangguan reproduksi, dan periode pemulihan yang lama pada beberapa hewan. Gejala klinis bervariasi pada setiap individu hewan, tetapi pada umumnya diawali dengan demam yang bersifat bifasik melanjut menjadi polifasik. Mortalitas biasanya rendah, namun, peningkatan kasus berakibat fatal telah dilaporkan dalam beberapa wabah akhir-akhir ini. Penyakit ini tersebar luas diberbagai daerah di Indonesia. Secara umum tidak menimbulkan kerugian ekonomi yang besar, asalkan segera mendapatkan pertolongan medis yang memadai sehingga tidak terjadi komplikasi dengan penyakit lain. Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mengulas penyebab, metode diagnosa, dan terapi yang dapat dilakukan untuk menanggulangi kejadian BEF.

Abstract

Recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) is one of the biotechnology-based drugs that are needed by the human medicine and has also been used in the veterinary medicine. Currently RhEPO has been widely used in the world of human medicine for the treatment of anaemia caused by renal failure, cancer, chronic inflammation and AIDS. In veterinary medicine, although there is still not much data on its achievements, rhEPO has also been used for cases of chronic renal failure in dogs and cats. However, since rhEPO is not identical to feline EPO and canine EPO, some patients eventually produce antibodies against the drug. The antibodies not only prevent EPO therapy from being effective, but also may lead to severe and life-threatening anemia. This paper provides a review of the use of RhEPO, rfEPO and rcEPO in veterinary medicine, especially for the purpose of non-regenerative anemia therapy in cases of chronic renal failure in dogs and cats.

Abstract

Numerous cases of acute renal failure in dogs and cats from 2004-2007 were associated with the ingestion of dog and cat pet food products and the suspected contaminant was identified as melamine and its derivatives such as cyanuric acid and melamine cyanurate. Melamine is a chemical used primarily for the manufacture of plastics, coatings, commercial filters, adhesives and compounds in the plate-making industry and kitchen appliance.But then these compounds have been abused to increase the content of nitrogen compounds in human food products and animal feed products, respectively. Increasing the content of nitrogen compounds from melamine aims to increase the value of false protein food and feed. Melamine basically has a wide security limit so it is relatively non-toxic if consumed by humans and animals. However, many studies and case reports show that melamine can cause damage to the kidneys especially if present together with cyanuric acid in the body.This paper aims to provide a simple overview and discussion in cases of damage to the urinary tract in dogs and cats that are likely caused by toxicity of melamine and its derivatives are likely to have occurred in Indonesia.

Abstract

Chocolate poisoning has long been recognized as a common cause mostly in dogs, although many species are susceptible. Contributing factors include indiscriminate eating habits and readily available sources of chocolate. In general, the poisoning resulted from a lack of public knowledge of the health hazard to dogs that may be imposed by these products.Chocolate is derived from the seeds of the plant Theobroma cacao, and the main toxic components are the methylxanthine alkaloids theobromine and caffeine, causing gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and central nervous signs. Diagnosis is based on history of exposure, along with clinical signs. Amphetamine or cocaine toxicosis, and ingestion of antihistamines, antidepressants, or other CNS stimulants should be considered in the differential diagnosis. Stabilization of symptomatic animals is a priority in treating chocolate toxicosis. Although there is no specific antidote, supportive management includes induction of vomiting and administration of activated charcoal, oxygen, and intravenous fluids. Preventing exposure is the key to reducing the incidence of these poisoning episodes. Therefore, it is important to increase the knowledge of dogs owners with regard to foodstuffs that must not be fed to dogs and should be stored outside their reach.

Abstract

Peningkatan kualitas pakan hewan merupakan hal penting dan mendasar dalam pengelolaan peternakan supaya menjadi lebih baik. Sampai sat ini telah diakui bahwa kualitas pakan yang rendah bertanggung jawab terhadap rendahnya penampilan hewan ternak. Bagi sebagian besar peternak, pakan merupakan komponen biaya paling tinggi dalam usaha peternakan. Pakan alternatif dapat diperoleh dari limbah pertanian yang banyak terdapat dalam jumlah besar di seluruh dunia. Faktor utama yang membatasi pemanfaatan limbah pertanian seperti jerami padi, jerami gandum dan jerami jagung adalah kecernaan, kadar protein dan palatabilitas yang rendah. Namun, nilai gizi dari limbah pertanian dapat ditingkatkan melalui perlakuan biologis sehingga memiliki peran penting dalam memenuhi kebutuhan nutrisi hewan. Perlakuan biologis merupakan pendekatan alternatif dengan memanfaatkan fungi untuk meningkatkan kecernaan limbah pertanian. Penggunaan white rot fungi, brown rot fungi dan soft rot fungi yang memetabolisme lignoselulosa merupakan perlakuan biologis potensial untuk meningkatkan nilai gizi limbah pertanian tersebut. Makalah ini bertujuan untuk membahas peran fungi dalam meningkatkan nilai gizi limbah pertanian seperti jerami padi, jerami gandum dan jerami jagung.

Saponin merupakan senyawa glikosida steroid atau triterpen ditemukan dalam berbagai tanaman dan memiliki peran penting dalam pakan ternak. Beberapa tanaman terutama leguminosa banyak digunakan sebagai pakan ternak. Pada tanaman saponin terdapat pada akar, umbi, kulit kayu, daun, biji, dan buah. Saponin memiliki dampak positif dan negatif pada produksi dan kesehatan hewan ternak karena memiliki aktivitas biologis yang luas. Abstract

The poor quality crop residues constitute the bulk of dry matter consumed by the ruminants. Like in most developing countries, including in Indonesia, feed shortage is the main constraint to their productivity. During the hot and dry seasons, the available feed resources are not enough in energy and digestion proteins, which are insufficient to maintenance requirements and reducing productivity throughout the year. The use of conventional feedstuffs such as rice brand, pollard, soybean cake, and groundnut cake to enhance production has become inappropriate. These supplements are in short supply owing to increasing demand from agricultural and industrial users. Their exorbitant prices and erratic supply made them too expensive for small-scale farmers to incorporate them into ruminant feeding. Urea Molasses Multinutrient Block (UMMB) is a convenient and inexpensive method of providing a range of nutrients to ruminants. Giving UMMB can improve low-quality feed digestion so in general can improve the performance of livestock such as milk production, weight, BCS and reproductive status. This article aims to evaluation the benefits of a UMMB for feed ruminants.
