Abstract

Low productivity of para rubber trees in Indonesia can be anticipated by the application of technology in the downstream sector, especially in terms of tapping such as by the application of latex stimulants. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of alternative stimulants sourced from household waste such as climacteric fruit peels that is mangosteen peel extract and obtain its concentration that gives the best effect on the latex production of rubber plants (Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg.). The reserach was carried out for five months at a smallholder rubber plantation in Dharmasraya District, West Sumatra. This study was designed using Randomized Block Design (RBD) that was repeated four times. The treatments were: without stimulant, mangosteen peel extract 3 ml application-1, mangosteen peel extract 4 ml application-1, mangosteen peel extract 5 ml application-1, and mangosteen peel extract 6 ml application-1. The results showed that the application of mangosteen peel extract as latex stimulants was able to increase the latex production when compared to without stimulant. Its application at 5 ml application-1 was able to produce the highest latex volume of 151,04 ml tapping-1 and without symptoms of tapping panel dryness.

Abstract

ABSTRACTCoffee is a promising commodity. Indonesian coffee is ranked fourth in the world after Brazil, Vietnam and Colombia with a total production of 786.19 thousand tons in 2021. The composition of coffee plantation ownership in Indonesia is dominated by smallholder plantations (PR) with a share of 96% of the total area in Indonesia. Many coffee farmers have not implemented the recommended coffee cultivation system. The use of quality seedling is one of the first steps that determines success in coffee cultivation. Improvements to the physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil which support the growth of plant seeds can be carried out by applying liquid organic fertilizer (LOF). Azolla pinata has a nutrient content of 1.96-5.30% N; 0.16-1.59% P; 2-4.5%K; 0.16-3.35% Si; 0.31-5.97% Ca;0.04-0.59% Fe; 0.22-0.66% Mg; 26-989 ppm Zn; and 66-2,944 ppm Mn. This study aims to determine the effect of A. pinnata LOF on the growth of robusta coffee seedlings and to obtain the best concentration of Azolla LOF that supports the growth of robusta coffee seedlings. The experiment was arranged according to a completely randomized design (CRD) with 5 treatments POC A. pinnata 0, 100, 125, 150, and 175 ml/l water, which was repeated 4 times. The observed data were analyzed using the F test at the 5% level and if the data were significantly different, it was continued with Duncan's New Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at the 5% level. The observed variables were plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf length, leaf width and root shoot ratio. The results showed that LOF Azolla pinnata had an influence on the growth of robusta coffee seedlings on the variables of seedling length, number of leaves and leaf length. The LOF treatment of A. pinnata with a concentration of 100 ml/l did not differ from other LOF concentrations in the parameter of the number of leaves of robusta coffee seedlings.

Abstract

Community service is important to do in order to develop the order and standard of living of the people in an area. One of them is in Nagari Sungai Kambut where many of the residents are not yet working or not working and some are only taking care of the household. In fact, when viewed from its natural potential, the Nagari Sungai Kambut region has quite a large potential for productive land, including the home yard. Therefore, dedication is carried out in the form of assistance in optimizing the use of the home yard for planting fruits. The hope is to increase the knowledge and improve the skills of the local population. The fruit produced can also be a source of income, apart from just for self-consumption. Service activities begin with socialization, counseling and followed by assistance in planting fruit trees. Farmers are guided and assisted by the team so that when there are problems they can be immediately resolved. During the socialization, the residents actively raised various questions, both from how to plant, maintain and even post-harvest. Seeing the enthusiastic response of the community shows that this service program has been able to increase knowledge about the importance of using the home yard, especially for planting fruits. Overall, a series of community empowerment activities through planting fruits in order to optimize the use of the home yard has given positive impact on the community. Appropriate cultivation techniques will provide benefits to society by increasing crop productivity. The product can be consumed or sold and participate in protecting the environment so that it remains sustainable. The enthusiasm of community was the evidence of their high curiosity and indicator of the successfulness of this activity.
