Abstract

The Covid-19 virus is transmitted from human to human through close contact with infected people through their respiratory droplets. A person can also be infected by touching an object contaminated with SARS-CoV-2 and then followed by reaching the eyes, nose, or mouth. Implementing the health protocol is necessary to reduce the number of virus transmissions. In addition, to increase the community's immune against Covid-19, WHO and the government have been developing a vaccination program. However, the recommendation from the latest research stated that people still have to obey the health protocol even after being vaccinated. The purpose of this community service was to help the government to increase people's understanding of the importance of implying health protocols, even after vaccination, to suppress Covid-19 cases. The method used is by holding an online event called a Webinar. It followed by a statement with audiences to commit to implementing the health protocol led by the Rector of Andalas University, then called a SIAGA SAKATO declaration. The activity began with a pre-test questionnaire for initial information collection, followed by education about Covid-19 prevention from the experts to the 512 students. The activity ended with the final data collection using a posttest questionnaire to test the student knowledge after the education. Paired t-test analysis showed a significant increase in student commitment after attending the Webinar (P≤0.05). Based on these results, the Webinar increases students' understanding of the importance of the health protocol in reducing the Covid-19 cases.

Abstract

As the global population increases, the need for effective elderly care becomes increasingly urgent. Health cadres play a crucial role in improving the health and well-being of communities. One of the strategies to address this need is training health cadres, who can serve as vital links between healthcare providers and the elderly. In this training program, we aimed to enhance the role of health cadres in elderly care to support the physical, mental, and social well-being of the elderly. Through interactive exercises and providing health cadre pocketbooks, participants learned how to assess the individual needs of the elderly and increase their motivation to visit nearby healthcare facilities, thus improving the health status of the elderly in the region of Nagari Padang Kandis, district of 50 Kota. The activity involved 15 elderly health cadres. This training showed a 25% increase in the cadres' knowledge, as improved pre-test and post-test scores indicated. The health cadres now possess the skills and knowledge to effectively support the elderly community in their environment, fostering an independent and active elderly population in their daily activities and reducing dependence on the productive-age population. Furthermore, this community engagement activity, involving collaboration between the academic community of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Andalas, and the Padang Kandis health center, will be conducted periodically to enhance the health status of the local individuals in their society life.

Abstract

In response to the newly emerging coronavirus disease or COVID-19 pandemic and its profound consequences on the world, many changes have been made to medical education. It includes teaching and learning methods that ensure the educational process’s success. The Andalas University Faculty of Medicine, Indonesia had to implement new online teaching strategies. This study examined how medical students perceived online education during the COVID-19 outbreak. The study is cross-sectional, employed online questionnaires. The response was that most students prefer face-to-face learning in practicum and clinical skills, which require hands-on methods to improve student skills. Half the students were satisfied, and several were neutral about distance learning. The student who agrees that the lecturer is active and has the expertise and knowledge for the class is more satisfied with distance learning (p0.001). The student who agrees about the platform quality, understandable learning guide, and facility from faculty has a higher level of satisfaction with distance learning (p0.001). This study concluded that a medical student at the Andalas University Faculty of Medicine was mainly satisfied with the institution’s response to the pandemic. However, medical faculty must evaluate and improve the quality of education in online learning.
