Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study aims at describing strategies used by the translator in grasping equivalence. The data are sentences containing the equivalence strategies and their translation into Indonesian taken from “Linguistics Across Culture” and “Linguistik di Pelbagai Budaya”. The data is collected using documentation method and the data is then analyzed using comparative method. The findings show that the equivalence strategies used by the translator of “Linguistics Across Culture” into “Linguistik di Pelbagai Budaya” include addition, deletion, adoption, adaptation, category shift, level shift, and intra-system shift.

Abstract

This study aims at (1) identifying the lingual form of disfemism in Joko Widodos Facebook account; (2) describing the addressing form containing sarcasm in Joko Widodos official Facebook account; and (3) identifying the sarcasm expression used by the operator and the uploader of the account. The object of this study is polite expressions. Linguistic unit of the expressions can be in the form of word, phrase, clause, and sentence. The data of this present study are sentence or sentences in Jokowis official Facebook account that contains positive connotation words. The data contexts of this research are discourse containing positive connotation sentences, the topic of discourse written by people in Jokowis account, the identity of the participant, and the context of extra-lingual that is based on the importance of the operator of the presidents social media account. The data collection was conducted through documentation technique. The data in Jokowis official account were copy-pasted. Then, the data were being read intensively to note the positive connotation utterance. The data analysis was conducted through referential (identity) method, pragmatic (identity) method, translational (identity) method, and articulatory phonetic (identity) method. The referential (identity) method was used to identify the topics that were stated by the uploader of the account. The pragmatic (identity) method was used to identify the background of (profession, organization etc) that appeared in their writings. The translational (identity) method was used in describing the origination of the language they use. It is possible that through the use of this method, this study finds the register on that account. Finally, the phonetic (identity) method was used to identify the utterance characteristic they stated. The positive or negative emotion of the speaker, usually, marked by the special pronunciation. To establish the data analysis, this study uses distributional method: substitution technique and paraphrase technique. Based on the data analysis, this study shows several results. First, the euphemism utterance in Jokowis official Facebook account using any levels, i.e. word, phrase, clause, and sentence. Through those levels, the writer presents suggestions and critics to the owner of the account Joko Widodo. Second, the functions that are stated through that account are expression device, communication relationship to the leader, integration device, and self-control device. Third, the topics stated by the people in that account are about the depiction of Joko Widodo that in their opinion, Joko Widodo shows pretending, the existence of Megawati in the election of Joko Widodo as a president, the increasing of IDR currency and other things at the beginning of his leadership. The expression shows hatred towards the elected president. Furthermore, they also express about Jokowis unability to establish the IDR currency and his leadership is judged as not good. In addition, to the people, especially netizen are invited to disbelieve to his leadership.

Abstract

The study aims at describing ethnic expressions and their intention of Javanesefarmers at Japanan district based on their social and cultural context. It uses descriptivequalitative research and the data are analyzed by Spreadly’s ethnographicanalysis. The analysis tries to describe the linguistic units and their intension basedon the social and cultural contexts. The findings show that the ethnic expressionsconsist of words and phrases. Those expression are used in all steps of agriculturalactivities done by the farmers, for examples, pranatamangsa ‘months’, mangsa udan‘wet season’, macul ‘to hoe’, mangsa sada ‘the eleventh month’, gawe pinihan ‘cultivationof seedlings’, mangsa kanem ‘the sixth month’, ketiga ‘dry season’, luku andgaru ‘plows’, ngrabuk ‘to fertilize’, matun ‘to clear away the weeds in the farms’,mangsa panen ‘harvest moon’, dewi sri ‘rice’, den bagus ‘rats’, methik/guwakan ‘misticor ritual ceremony before harvesting time’, sedhekah bumi/bersih desa/rasulan ‘misticceremony after harvesting with wayang kulit show entitled sri boyong, sri mulih, or srisadana.

Abstract

The objectives of the study were to investigate the process of English writing from students of undergraduate international class, to describe problems faced by students in writing English, and to find out the factors which inhibit and improve their writing skills. There were six female respondents in international class. The study used documentation from the students’ work, open-ended questionnaire and interview as the instruments for data gathering. All the data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative approach. The results of this study showed that all students used four stages in the process of English writing: planning, drafting, editing and final revision. The students’ English writing problems covered content, organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanic. The factors which inhibit them in writing English included not being confident in writing English, not mastering grammar and vocabulary, and lack of practice in writing. The aspects which encourage them to write English were due to the demands as international class students, watching English movie, reading English books or journals, listening English songs and having ambition to acquire scholarship overseas.

Abstract

Terjemaham adalah pengalihan pesan dari bahasa sumber ke bahasa sasaran yang berterima, akurat, dan memiliki keterbacaan yang tinggi. Artikel hasil penelitian deskriptif kualitatif ini bertujuan mengklasifikasi pergeseran dan mendeskripsikan keakuratan terjemahan frasa nomina dari bahasa Inggris ke Bahasa Indonesia. Data berupa kalimat yang didalamnya terdapat frasa nomina yang berfungsi sebagai subjek, objek, dan keterangan. Data dikumpulkan dengan simak catat dari Novel Harry Potter ke-7 dan terjemahannya. Data dianalisis menggunakan teori Catford yang dipadu dengan teori Spradly. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa terdapat dua jenis pergeseran, yakni pergeseran tataran dan pergeseran struktur dari pola frasa nomina yang ada dalam data. Keakuratan hasil penelitian ini terbagi dua yakni akurat dan kurang akurat. Hasil penelitian tersebut dapat dijadikan contoh yang tepat dalam pengajaran praktik menerjemahkan teks bahasa Inggris ke Indonesia.

Abstract

Artikel hasil penelitian deskriptif kualitatif ini bertujuanmendeskripsikan kualitas terjemahan abstrak berbahasa Indonesia kedalam bahasa Inggris menggunakan google translate danaplikasinya dalam pembelajaran penerjemahan. Data berupa kalimathasil terjemahan dalam abstrak berbahasa Indonesia dan bahasaInggris. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan teori kualitasterjemahan (Nababan, 2012) dan Lauscher (2000). Hasil analisiskualitas terjemahan diukur dari empat elemen yakni, (1) accuracy(correct and incorrect meaning, standard terminology, consistency ofterminology, and unstranslated source language); (2) style (registeruse and active or passive voices); (3) grammar (spelling errors,typos, grammar error, syntax errors, and punctuation errors), and(4) format (layout, font, and double spaces). Temuan keduamenjelaskan bahwa hasil penelitian pertama tersebut dapatdigunakan sebagai contoh pembelajaran menerjemahkan dengangoogle translate di kelas Translation. Aplikasi pembelajaran denganenam langkah inti, yakni (1) mahasiswa diminta menulis abstrakringkas dalam bahasa Indonesia dengan topik linguistik ataupendidikan; (2) mahasiswa menyalin dan menempel pada googletranslate yang sudah disiapkan; (3) hasil terjemahan disalin danditempel ke word; (4) hasil terjemahan ditata bersanding dengan tekssumber; (5) keduanya dibandingkan dan ditandai (diklasifikasi)elemen keakuratan, gaya (style), grammar, dan formatnya; (6) hasil klasifikasi didiskusikan di kelas dengan bimbingan dosen. Langkah-langkah tersebut dilakukan empat kali sehingga mahasiswa paham kelebihan dan kekurangan hasil terjemahan dengan menggunakangoogle translate.

Abstract

Artikel hasil penelitian ini bertujuan (1) mengklasifikasi jenis tuturandeklaratif dalam Bahasa Inggris dan Indonesia, (2) mendeskripsikankeakuratan terjemahan unsur tuturan deklaratif bahasa Inggris kebahasa Indonesia, (3) mengklasifikasi pergeseran terjemahan unsurutama (subjek, predikat, dan objek) tuturan deklaratif bahasa Inggriske bahasa Indonesia, Data penelitian deskriptif kualitatif ini berupatuturan deklaratif bahasa Inggris dan terjemahannya dalam bahasaIndonesia yang terdapat dalam skrip film Alladin dan novel HarryPotter. Data dikumpulkan dengan analisis isi dengan cara penataandata awal berupa tabel perbandingan bahasa Inggris dan bahasaIndonesia. Berdasarkan perbandingan tersebut langkah yangdilakukan selanjutnya adalah pencatatan data pada kolom-kolomsesuai dengan jenis tuturan deklaratif, kemudian diklasifikasi unsurtuturan deklaratif, dan langkah terakhir ditentukan keakuratanterjemahannya. Data yang sudah diklasifikasi, kemudian dianalisisdengan teori pragmatik (Kreidler) untuk menjawab tujuan pertama.Disamping itu, teori penerjemahan (Lauscher) digunakan untukmenjawab tujuan pertama dan kedua. Sedangkan untuk menjawabpertanyaan kedua dan ketiga digunakan teori Catford tentangpergeseran terjemahan dan keakuratan terjemahan. Berdasarkananalisis data, temuan pertama menunjukkan bahwa ada sebelas jenistuturan deklaratif dalam Bahasa Inggris dan terjemahanya dalamBahasa Indonesia, yakni meyakinkan, menyerah, mengabaikan,penamaan, penunjukkan, menghukum, mengesankan, memutuskan,melarang, dan mengijinkan. mengklasifikasi yang masing-masingmempunyai tiga unsur utama yakni subjek, predikat, dan objek.Temuan kedua menunjukkan bahwa terjemahan sebelas jenis tuturandeklaratif mempunyai hasil terjemahan akurat meskipunpenerjemahakan menggunakan pergeseran terjemahan yangdijelaskan dalam temuan berikutnya. Temuan ketiga, unsur subjek,predikat dan objek dalam sepuluh jenis tuturan deklaratifditerjemahakan dengan menggunakan pergeseran kategori,pergeseran tataran, dan pergeseran struktur. Ketiga hasil analisistersebut dapat digunakan sebagai contoh yang disajikan padapembelajaran mata kuliah Translation dengan topik sejenis.

Abstract

Artikel ini bertujuan mengklasifikasi media yang digunakan olehdosen dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, menjelaskam kendalayang dihadapi, menjebutkan usulan dan harapan mahasiswa kelasinternasional selama pandemi covid 19 di UniversitasMuhammadiyah Surakarta, dan mendeskripsikan solusi yangdilakukan oleh Dosen. Data penelitian descriptive kualitatif iniberupa informasi yang diambil dengan kuesioner tertutup danterbuka yang dipilih dan diisi oleh 275 mahasiswa kelasinternasional dan 29 Dosen yang pengajar English for InternationalClass (EIC). Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa dosen menggunakan12 jenis media, yakni google meet, zoom, WA text, WA Audio (voiceNote), WA video, e-mail, modul, lembar tugas, video youtube, videodosen, schoology, dan lain-lain (open learning, PPT, dan PPTbernarasi). Temuan kedua menjelaskan kendala yang dihadapimahasiswa adalah gangguan jaringan internet, kuota mahal, biayaperkuliahan mahal, kurang efektif dan sulit memahami materi, dosenhanya memberi tugas dan tidak membahas, materi kurang bervariasi,tidak dapat selalu bertatap muka dengan dosen. Temuan ketigausulan yang diharapkan oleh mahasiswa adalah segera kuliahluring, ada bantuan kuata yang merata dan konsisten karena adayang dapat bantuan kuota dan ada yang tidak dapat bantuan kuotadari pemerintah, biaya perkuliahan jangan mahal karena harusmengeluarkan biaya untuk membeli kuota internet, hendaknya dosenmenjelaskan dengan metode dan teknik yang bervariasi dan disajikandengan cara yang menyenangkan agar mudah dipahami, sebaiknyadosen membahas tugas yang diberikan dan memberikan feedbackagar mahasiswa mengetahui kekurangannya, hendaknya dosenmemberikan materi yang bervariasi agar menarik, dan sebaiknyadosen mengajar selalu dengan zoom atau google meet. Temuanterakhir solusi yang diberikan dosen untuk untuk mnghadapi kendalayang dihadapi oleh mahasiswa dalam pembelajaran di masapandemi covid 19 antara lain menggunakan media yang bervariasiuntuk menyampaikan materi, mencari lokasi dengan koneksiinternet yang stabil untuk memberikan kuliah, mengingatkanmahasiswa satu hari sebelum jadwal perkuliahan, memberikanrangkuman materi PPT bernarasi di schoology, membuka sesitanya jawab di WAG, memotivasi ahasiswa agar mereka tetap joinkelas daring, dan memberikan video penjelasan dosen.
