Abstract

National diversification of wheat-based food has been put into practice. Public consumption of flour-based food, such as noodles and bread, is in great demand. This study aims to determine the calculations, perceptions and attitudes of farmers towards wheat farming, considering that Indonesia is a non-wheat developing country. This qualitative descriptive research using in-depth interviews with 7 informants and observation methods was conducted in Klaten and Demak Regencies. In analyzing the data, this study used an interactive analysis model including data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. The results show that: 1) based on farmers' calculations, wheat farming is financially not profitable to farmers because the products harvested are not worth the expense; 2) farmers' calculations affect farmers' perceptions which shifted to negative perceptions that wheat farming is not as promising as other farming businesses. Despite the negative perceptions, wheat farming has provided a valuable experience for farmers which is shown by their pride and pleasure and 3) the majority of farmers are not interested in wheat farming, which is shown by their attitude of not being able to accept wheat farming, while other farmers behave otherwise, indicated by their willingness to recommence wheat planting testing. Further research may examine: 1) how to change the culture of rice farming into culture of wheat farming; 2) how to change subsistence rice farming into enterprise and 3) how to change rice farming as social activities to rice farming as business activities.

Abstract

The demand for palm sugar is increasing since people prefer natural ingredients. Natural and organic food ingredients have the reputation of being healthier and safer than synthetic ingredients. This study will discuss one particular ingredient namely palm sugar which is known as a natural sweetener. Developed countries have started to import palm sugar as a natural sweetener from developing countries. The production of palm sugar in developing countries has an important benefit in the craftsman household economy. However, current production of palm sugar does not meet the increasing demand, which is caused mainly by the lack of farmers, palm sugar craftsmen’s inadequate knowledge of palm sugar production, and poor incorporation of technology both in the cultivation of palm tree and the production process of palm sugar. This literature review study aims to understand the continuity of palm sugar production within the following framework which consists of four steps: (1) identifying current situation, (2) identifying the problems, (3) presenting the resolution, (4) proposing programs and strategies. Based on this framework a few programs and strategies are generated to maintain the continuity of palm sugar production, they are: (1) Palm trees domestication, (2) research and development center for Indonesian palm sugar, and (3) ensuring a good collaboration among the stake holders involved.

Abstract

This study aims to know the level of resistance of farmers and the factors that affect the level of resistance of farmers to organic rice farming in the Boyolali Organic Farmers Association (APOB). This is descriptive quantitative research. Data collected by interviewing with a questionnaire to 88 farmers who are members of APOB and not yet or not applying organic rice farming. Internal factors in this study are knowledge, skills, attitudes and subjective norms, while external factors consist of social environment and economic environment. Data analysis used descriptive analysis and multiple linear regression. The results showed that: 1) the level of resistance of farmers was classified into moderate resistance because farmers carried out processing and fertilization approaching organic, while the use of seeds, pesticides and integrated pest management (IPM) still tended to approach conventional. Perceptions of farmers who are resistant to organic rice farming include a greater risk of organic rice farming, greater capital spent and too complicated regulations; 2) Internal factors that affect the level of farmer resistance are skills and subjective norms, while the external factors that influence is economic environment. Keywords: Boyolali Organic Farmers Association (APOB), Resistance Factors, Resistance Levels, Organic Rice Farming.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the comparative advantage of the agricultural sector in Central Lampung Regency. This study uses secondary data obtained from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) and other relevant agencies. The analysis technique used is Location Quotient (LQ), Klassen Typology, and Dynamic Location Quotient (DLQ). The LQ results show that the sub-sector, food crops, horticulture, and livestock are the basic sub-sectors, while the plantation and fisheries sub-sectors are non-basic sub-sectors in Central Lampung Regency in 2014-2017. The results of the DLQ show that the plantation sub-sector will be repositioned to become a basic sub-sector in the future. The sub-sectors that did not experience repositioning or shifting were the food crops, horticulture and livestock sub-sectors, where the three sub-sectors became the basic sub-sectors and will remain the basic sub-sectors in the future. The fisheries sub-sector has also not experienced a repositioning where the sub-sector will remain a non-basic sub-sector in the future. The results of Klassen's Typology Analysis show that the horticulture and livestock sub-sector is a developed and rapidly growing sub-sector, the plantation sub-sector is an advanced but depressed sub-sector, the food crops sub-sector is a potential sub-sector, and the fisheries sub-sector is a relatively lagging sub-sector. The sub-sector that has a comparative advantage in Central Lampung Regency is the horticulture and livestock sub-sector because this sub-sector is an advanced and fast-growing sub-sector.

Abstract

Abstract

The vanilla commodity, which once triumphed in its era in the 1980s, has experienced a decline due to the decline in selling prices in the 1890s. It has resulted in many vanilla farmers switching to other commodities. One of the Independent Agricultural and Rural Training Centers that empowers vanilla farmers is Griya Vanili Salatiga, better known as P4S Griya Vanilla. The aims of this study were 1) to determine the condition of the assisted farmers in P4S Griya Vanili Salatiga; 2) to know the role of P4S Griya Vanili Salatiga towards its fostered farmers. This study involved the Head of P4S Griya Vanili Salatiga as Key Informants and two farmers assisted by P4S Griya Vanili Salatiga as participants. The data were analyzed using an interactive analysis model, including data reduction, presentation, and conclusion. The results showed that: 1) the condition of the farmers assisted by P4S Griya Vanili Salatiga experienced a change in the mindset of vanilla farming, namely from subsistence farmers to commercial farmers; 2) the role of P4S is as a source of increasing knowledge and changing the mindset of farmers through the provision of training materials and infrastructure needed by fostered farmers. P4S Griya Vanili Salatiga has broughtabout significant changes in the agricultural conditions of its fostered farmers, both from the economic and cognitive aspects.
